The Importance ofEndowment

Help Secure The Old Globe for Generations to Come

CRAIG NOEL LEAGUE MEMBERSDeferred Giving Society of The Old Globe

With an annual budget of $19 million, The Old Globeis one of the ten leading theatres, out of more than2,000 in the United States. However, compared toother prominent performing arts organizationsthroughout the country, the Globe has a smallendowment of only $3 million. As part of the “Capitaland Endowment Campaign: Securing a San DiegoLandmark,” The Old Globe is seeking to address this critical need with your support.

The purpose of an endowment is to secure the theatrefor the long term, to ensure financial stability throughleaner economic times. As a rule, an institution like theGlobe needs an endowment approximately two to threetimes the size of its annual budget, which would be anendowment of a minimum of $40 million.

By drawing on the interest earned from theendowment, the theatre receives a reliable annualincome to supplement annual ticket sales, regular

annual contributions, grants, sponsorships and other earned income. Endowmentgifts are typically madethrough estate plans andother planned giving options, and to this end the Craig NoelLeague was created. Thisleague is named in honor ofthe Globe’s Founding

Director, Craig Noel, who has been associated with thistheatre since 1937, and guided the Globe to become oneof the nation’s most successful not-for-profit theatres.

Members of the Craig Noel League have notified the Globe of their intent to include the Globe in theirestate plans. We look forward to hearing from youabout joining the Craig Noel League. Please contactBrad Ballard at (619) 231-1941 x2309 and help preserve the Globe for generations to come.

he advancement of women in the workplace over the

last thirty years brought with it an unforeseen irony: adverse com-petition between female workers.

Recently, the U.S. Department ofLabor reported that the women’slabor force participation rate hadincreased from 43% in 1970 to 59%in 2004. Furthermore, women havemore job options than their prede-cessors; more women than ever owntheir own businesses, according tothe U.S. Census of 2002. Despitethis progress, additional studiesshow that women are having diffi-culty working together. A GallupPoll conducted in 2002 indicated that 32% of women preferred a male boss, whereas only 23% preferred a female. Another study, conducted in 1999 by psychol-ogist Dr. Judith Briles, stated that 75% of respondents (both male and female)reported being the subject of sabotaging behavior by a woman. Dr. Briles estimatesthat the damage by this “sabotage” costs American businesses $39 billion per year.

In her 2005 book, journalist Nan Mooney interviewed over 100 women about their experiences with work-related competition. Aptly titled I Can’t Believe She Did That! Why Women Betray Other Women at Work, the book claims that women avoid directconflict and instead engage in covert and dishonest competition, often resulting indamaged or broken relationships.

Experts are publishing manuals on how to maintain a healthy work environment between

women. Noted psychologist Dr. Lynne M.Hornyak, in her article “Competition: HowWomen Can Hold Their Own in theWorkplace” (2003), defines “toxic vs.healthy” competition, and suggests ways that women “can move forward to embrace

competition.” Motivational speaker JodellA. Raymond calls women’s competition

“The Dark Side of Sisterhood,” and identifiesreasons for detrimental work relationships, including

childhood experience and generational differences. — Kim Montelibano Heil

Dispatches From the Front (Office)Women . . .“Most of us don’t have mothers who blazed atrail for us — at least, not all the way. Comingof age before or during the inception of thewomen’s movement, whether as working parentsor homemakers, whether married or divorced, our mothers faced conundrums — what shouldthey be? how should they act? – that became ouruncertainties.”

— Anne Roiphe, Raising Daughters

“Women’s art, though created in solitude, wells up out of community. There is, clearly, both enormous hunger for the work thus beingdiffused, and an explosion of creative energy, bursting through the coercive choicelessness ofthe system on whose boundaries we are working.”

— Adrienne Rich

“The invention of the first practical “mechanicalwriting machine” in 1867, which was put on themarket in 1874 by E. Remington & Sons as a“Type Writer,” transformed offices and providednew opportunities for women. In 1879, MaryFoot Seymour opened the first typing school forwomen, who learned a skill that gave them accessto male-dominated clerical jobs. Women movedrapidly into office positions until by 1900 morethan 75% of all clerical workers were female —up from just 3% in 1870.

Both the typist and her machine were called“typewriters,” and because this was somethingquite new, women with typing skills could not beaccused of displacing men from their desks.Since offices were perceived as clean, safeworking environments, middle-class high schoolgraduates saw the roles of typewriter, bookkeeper, and clerk as preferable to being afactory girl. ”

eela Banerjee, writing in the Business Day sectionof the August 10, 2001 New York Times, reports

on a Mountain View, California, women’s supportgroup which meets the first Thursday of everymonth. They sit in a circle and confess:“I’mSuzann, and I’m a recovering bully broad…or maybea relapsing one.” “I came here—excuse me, I wassent here—because of my intolerance for incompe-tence, and for having a passion for my job that scaredpeople to death.”

Sounds like an AA meeting. But these women are raging successes, with six figureincomes earned in key executive positions. Their tough, no-nonsense ways haveintimidated their subordinates, colleagues, and bosses, and brought them to BullyBroads, an executive coaching program.

It advises them to achieve even more by going back to being ladies. No more ’80sactivist stances. Learn to pause, be thoughtful — stammer even — cry, but talk calmlythrough the tears.

Nearly all the group’s 17 members were sent because of their intimidating manage-ment styles. “Many of the things these women do would not be as inappropriate in aman,” the program’s director, Jean Hollands, said. “We want these women to be morepowerful and not feel more victimized, thinking ‘We don’t get the same considerationmen do.’ We don’t. So what? We’ve only been in the work force as leaders for 50years. Men have a 600-year head start on us.” — Jerry Patch

29. WORKING GIRLSThe working girls in the morning are going towork — long lines of them afoot amid the down-town stores and factories, thousands with littlebrick-shaped lunches wrapped in newspapersunder their arms.

Each morning as I move through this river ofyoung-woman life I feel a wonder about where itis all going, so many with a peach bloom ofyoung years on them and laughter of red lips andmemories in their eyes of dances the night beforeand plays and walks.

Green and gray streams run side by side in ariver and so here are always the others, thosewho have been over the way, the women whoknow each one the end of life’s gamble for her,the meaning and the clew, the how and the wayof the dances and the arms that passed aroundtheir waists and the fingers that played in theirhair.

Faces go by written over: “I know it all, I knowwhere the bloom and the laughter go and I havememories,” and the feet of these move slower andthey have wisdom where the others have beauty. So the green and the gray move in the earlymorning on the downtown streets.

WEISMAN’S WOMEN

“SolomonXavierGreenspanSachs—Nohe’s not c’I take a message.”

It’s a litany for the women who coverthe firm’s offices in Hold Please, AnnieWeisman’s nine-to-five workplace comedy. The eponymous quartet of partners israrely in the office; they arrive late, leaveearly, and are often out of town to attendconferences, seminars and recreational retreats.

The four who hold their fort are drawnfrom two generations of working women.Agatha and Grace date back to the “dittodays” before copiers. They’ve been withSXG&S long enough to qualify for therainbow benefits package. Erika and Jessica are in their mid-20s, and bring acontemporary post-feminist sensibility tothe workplace, often to the distress ofAgatha and Grace.

Playwright Annie Weisman, a SanDiego native, illustrates the humor andheartbreak in a workplace forever changedby the feminist movement. She tracks thelives of women whose generation wonimportant gains and the ones who fol-lowed, claiming them as their birthright.

In so doing, she steps past politicalcorrectness with confidence enough to useher four characters to re-examine what hastruly been gained and lost.

GETTING OFF ‘HOLD’

Her agent’s submission of her firstplay, Be Aggressive, which received its pre-miere production at La Jolla Playhouse in2001, introduced Annie Weisman — theplaywright — to the regional theatrescene. Until that time she had been Annie, the mid-20s assistant to theAssociate Artistic Directors at the MarkTaper Forum.

Commissions from South CoastRepertory, Audrey Skirball-Kenis TheaterProjects, and Rhode Island’s TrinityRepertory allowed Weisman to leave herday job and pursue playwriting full time.

Weisman is a fifth generation residentof Los Angeles, but she was born in SanDiego where her mother, an urban planner, and her father, a physician, lived for twodecades. She attended Torrey Pines HighSchool in Del Mar, where she was a cheer-leader and a fledgling writer.

She began in theatre as an actress, butimmediately caught the ear of DeborahSalzer, director of San Diego’s YoungPlaywrights Project, with her first efforts atplaywriting. Weisman’s short play, We’reTalking Today Here, won one of Salzer’scompetitions and was given a productionat The Old Globe.

Weisman went east to WilliamsCollege as an English Lit major — she wasnever a drama student — and spent herjunior year at Oxford. After graduating, she planned on beginning graduateschool, but took a job at the Taper instead.

“Each year I intended to start a gradu-ate program, but working at the Taperbecame my drama school — interning andloitering around the Taper halls, hangingout with the artists who came through andseeing how they worked,” Weisman said.

In Hold Please, Weisman was interestedin exploring “divisions between genera-tions of women at work.”

“I found it kind of ironic that womenwere supposed to be nurturing and sup-portive of each other, but in the workplaceit seemed that competition betweenwomen was more intense than it was formen.”

Her success with playwriting eventual-ly led her into the faster-paced world oftelevision, where she quickly built a repu-tation as a talented writer for shows likeDead Like Me, Inconceivable and her currentassignment Heartland.

“Well, it’s everything that everybodysays,” she laughs when asked how TV-writing compares to playwriting. “In TV,you don’t own your work at the end of theday. But when you have the chance towork with incredibly talented people, andyou have the immediate gratification ofseeing your work on the screen – it can begreat.” She pauses. “Plays just have sucha long genesis.”

She has not, however, fully traded inthe world of live theatre for television. Hernewest play, The Surf Report, was commis-sioned by SCR, and her musical adapta-tion of “Alice in Wonderland,” The EssentialAlice, is under consideration for productionat La Jolla Playhouse.

The Globe’s production of Hold Pleasemarks a kind of homecoming forWeisman, who fondly remembers herchildhood here. “I am definitely a productof San Diego,” she admits. “I participatedin the Junior Theatre summer camp, Iwent through the Young PlaywrightsProject, and I saw plays both at the OldGlobe and at La Jolla Playhouse.”

As she reflects on how this has shapedher career, she adds, “There’s also thismythic quality about California – and howit’s a place for beginnings and discovery. Ithink that metaphor has always informedmy work.”
