Special Teams are an integral part of Hokie football and one ofthe units is called “Pride and Joy.” These NFL players are also asource of pride and joy due to their commitment to Virginia Tech onand off the field. Virginia Tech has recently constructed a display inthe Hall of Legends in the Merryman Athletic Center to honor suchformer players.

John Engelberger was a dominating defensive end who wentfrom walk-on to four-year starter at Tech, to second-round NFL Draftpick, earning All-America honors and his college degree along theway.

Waddy Harvey was a standout who started three seasons atdefensive tackle and won the coveted Williams Award for leadershipand character before joining the Buffalo Bills. Frank and CherylBeamer sponsored Harvey for recognition on the Pride and Joydisplay.

Before starting an NFL career, Jim Pyne, a powerful center in theearly 1990s, started 41 games and allowed just one sack in over2,700 snaps on his way to becoming the Hokies’ first unanimous All-American.

Michael Vick was an electrifying quarterback who made a lastingimpact on college football while helping Virginia Tech to a nationalchampionship game and back-to-back 11-1 seasons beforebecoming the top NFL pick in 2001.

A two-time All-American, Cornell Brown became the first VirginiaTech football player to gain consensus All-America honors as a juniorwhen he was named to five first teams in 1995. He was selectedNational Defensive Player of the Year by Football News in 1995.

Jim Pyne was the first player chosen inthe NFL’s 1998 expansion draft.
