G’Day one and all.

After last months Article, talking about signsthat make me chuckle, I thought I wouldshare some other signs that were sent to me.The “don’t drive like a ….” one, I am lead tobelieve, is from the land down under but wassent to me by some one from SouthernAfrica. So lets just call it a SouthernHemisphere sign. There were others that onemight deem a little to risque for it to go intoprint, but are genuine signs out there.

There were a few good opportunities to getout on the Harley’s during October. Somegreat ride outs andescapes to theDealership too.On one of theSaturdays, Elaineand I witnessed anew type of LoHrideout. It wasn’texactly LoH but itwas about 15 or soLadies out on theirbicycles, that roll upoutside theDealership. Thelead rider was in ayellow flossy andthe tail was in a pinkone. We watchedthem line up in theirwheel to wheelformation. Theyturn left at thestop street, andthen right. Elaineand I just startedto chuckle as theygot split up a littleElaine was hopingthe Lead would do a second women drop offand then wondered if they used the samebuddy system as we did. They were probablyweekend warriors as some of their skills werenot up to the usual bicycle standards that weshould see on the roads. Well they never diddo a drop off but the Lead and tail were keptvery busy trying to keep everyone togetherand safe. They (or rather our imaginations)provided an hilarious 20 minutes or sowatching these people out doing somethingdifferent on the weekend. Maybe we shouldhave stopped them Elaine?, you could havegiven them some Road Captain advice.

Sticking with the Dealership, did any of youhead over there on Halloween Saturday? Ifyou didn’t you need to check out the photos

on page 7. The great thing about theDealership Folks is they really go the whole“HOG” when it comes to festivities. I wonderwhat we will all dress up as on our Coffeemorning in December? Did you get your 110anniversary pin at the open weekend? I did(nah nah nah nah nah) the first 110 people instore received one. Who needsMilwaukee when we haveOxford, eh?

All the leaves are brown and thesky is grey. The crisp blue skyautumn days are few and farbetween but we can stillcapture some wonderful sights,if we just keep our eyes open tothem. We now get to see the

sunrise and set at a reasonable time of theday (see the positive spin I am trying to haveon the clocks going back?) Seriously though Ilove the colours in the sky at sunrise andsunset. To me it’s a little miracle unravellingin front of me everyday. Neither day is thesame in that great big sky of ours.

I was driving to work the other day (yes Iknow, why was I not on my bike?!), a fewleaves along the pavement got caught in agentle whirlwind and blew across the car.Surprise surprise my imagination ran awaywith me. It looked like the invisible man washidden amongst a pile of leaves and had just

stood and put his handsout to catch the car.The beautiful goldenbrowns, rusty yellowsand aging green leavesclinging to him, yetgentling rising up andmanoeuvring over theroad.

Some days that wind hasnot been that gentle hasit? Major gusts andchucking rain bashingagainst the windows, sometimes with a bit ofsleet in it for goodmeasure. Well I’drather me here than inNew Jersey and NewYork, where Sandy hit.My brother is currentlyover there for work, sohad to evacuate to a citynear by and ride out thestorm. They still don’thave power but are safeand well. He said he and

his crew had a crate of Corona so they werefine. Ha!

We may have a new Editor, so I will behanding over the keys to Hoggit Towers soon.Which means that really is almost all Folks.

See you out there.Jean

Anyway back to business, the Morse walk on7th October was really good day and theweather really made it, the route was lovelyskirting by the rivers Thames and Cherwell. We had just over 20 for afternoon tea, which apart from the interestingsandwiches it was an extremely enjoyableafternoon.

Greetings my fellow cousins, how the devilare you all doing? Been busy the past month?Been anywhere of interest in the pastmonth? Found a new good riding road in thepast month? Found a new tea/cake/coffeestop during the past month? If you haveanswered “Yes” to any of the above thenperhaps you’d like to share with the rest ofyour riding family and drop Jean Jeannie aline or two about it.As I put fingers to keyboard I’m wonderingwhat to jibber about but by the time you’veread to the end of the page you will havegathered that I’ve miraculously foundsomething for you. Today (or last night) theclocks went back an hour, in fact only halfof them have gone back in our household soRay’s possibly wondering what the deal is atthe moment. Anyway, I was catching up witha few messages on Facebook and adding acouple of bits to the Chapter’s FB accountwhen in pops a message from one of ourAmerican buddies across the pond,Stephen’s just got out of bed and wonderingabout breakfast & here I am late afternoonwondering what to do for tonight’s supper.I never thought I’d be a follower of FB butI must admit that it’s pretty good forkeeping up to date with our fellow friendsacross the pond, especially our twotransatlantic members BJ & Luann. Thatreminds me, I really should ask them for arally article as they went to Williams for theArizona State HOG Rally a while ago. Ray &have stopped off at Williams a couple oftimes during our various American travels,it’s on Route 66 and is the ‘gateway’ to theGrand Canyon. But what have other Oxford members beenup to though? A bunch of us went to NewForest Chapter’s Blazing Saddles Rally whichwas a good weekend and well worth a returnvisit again next year. It was the usual storywith the weather: sun, rain, wind, sun, rainbut there was an exceptionally good turnoutof bikes for the rideout in Weymouth onSaturday morning, if you go to our FB pageyou can see a video of the 200+ bikes thatLesley & Richard managed to take. Onreturning to the rally site, our fellowmember (and Head RC for TV) Nij showedhis bike in the Ride in Bike Show and walkedaway with two medals and a trophy for Bestin Show…. I’ve never seen Nij look sospeechless. In fact, of the 10 Oxfordmembers that travelled to Weymouth, 7 of

us are also Thames Valley members so alongwith the rest of Thames Valley we had agood representation from our neck of thewoods. The following weekend saw Oxford providingroad crew for one of the meeting/collectionpoints for the Ride to the Wall and weescorted several hundred riders fromCherwell Valley Services to the NationalArboretum. Huge Thanks go to each of ourRoad Captains (Kim, Paul, Steve Price, Brian& David) and Marshalls (Ray & Russell) whotook part in this, especially to Director Cyril& Activities Officer Andy for leading it andto our Head Road Captain Geoff for all ofthe time & effort he put into this with theevent organisers to make it work. Thanksalso go to our previous Director DavidSimpson for riding in the Parade of Flagswith our very own chapter flag. This was thefirst time Ray & I have ever attended thisevent as we’re normally in America but weshall be regular RTTW attendees from nowon, it was just amazing; a very proud, poignant, powerful and emotional day. Geoffand I had the honour of laying a wreath onbehalf of Oxford UK Chapter; this will be amemory that shall stay with me for a verylong time….. it was a very proud moment tobe able to honour our troops in such a way.The day after couldn’t have been moredifferent, 20+ members took part in theMorse Walk in Oxford and it was such atreat to see Nigel & Val Watson in our midstagain. Our LoH Officer Julie was our tourguide for the afternoon and apparently wewalked about 5 miles but with all the chatterand admiring the autumn scenery we’d havenever guessed it was that far, although wewere ready for a cuppa by the time we gotto Browns for our afternoon tea.

As for what else have we been up to……TheDealership Open Weekend drew in lots offamiliar faces, a bunch of members went toBattle for the Battle of Hastings event onlyto get there and find it got cancelled, notto be put off they headed off to Brightonfor the Brightonia event. Our fellowmember & Road Captain Paul Farmer wasshowing his customised bike but as yet I’venot heard how he got on.Rounding off the month, the LoH Lunch wasyet another successful trip out and meetingup at the dealership beforehand was a bonusas Alan & his Crew had got into theHalloween groove and were quite a frightfulsight. It was also a treat as we were gracedwith the presence of our Yorkshire memberDorian who was heading of to Newark foranother event as soon as he’d finished offhis lunch. As for the month ahead, well it doesn’tappear to be slowing down any. Our RoadCaptains will have met up on Sat 3rd Nov toput together a selection of dates andrideouts for you all. On Sat 10th Nov Cyril& I will have been to Maidstone, Kent forthe SOFER debrief meeting and plans willstart again for SOFER 10. As you’re allreading this now I can remind you that it’sthe Skittles Night on Sat 17th Nov which willbe a fun filled social evening, if you’ve notbooked up for this yet then please go andsee our Activies Officer Andy and pay yourfiver. The following weekend will see ourjoint Riverboat Cruise with Thames Valleyon Sat 24th Nov for our end of season party, please see me if you wish to book for thisand this November’s chapter night is thelast call for tickets. Then Sat 1st Dec is theLoH trip into Winchester for a ChristmasMarket, please see Julie to let her knowyou’re interested. Sat 8th Dec will be theLoH Coffee morning, please see Julie’sarticle for more info on this. Sun 9th Dec isthe Reading Toy Run and then it’ll be clubnight yet again. It can’t be said that there’s nothing goingon, there’s always something for somebodyat sometime. So, considering I wasn’t sure what to write,I’ve managed to find something to keep youoccupied for a short while. Now, I reallymust go and finish changing the rest of theclocks.Over ‘n Out, Elaine

Sunday 16th September 2012.

Ladies 1, gentlemen 1.Actually, that should really be Gentlemen3 and Ladies nil, as I had inadvertently ledthe ride straight past the Big Pit entrance(whilst checking my mirrors for thestragglers being rounded up by the everefficient Jane) and instead into the backentrance, which originally had been aconcreted road which, over the years, haddeteriorated into a series of very deepravines and craters. I immediately placedmy trusty V-Rod into motocross mode anddid a power run across the shattered roadsurface much to Renee’s discomfort. Wemade it, along with a couple of others butwisely, the rest stopped and were led viathe proper route to the Pit by SuperstarJane who saved the day, and probably afew bikes. Having now assembled togetherand parked, it transpired that we now hadone ‘dead’ bike which turned out to becaused by both battery terminals beingloose.

Hand in your watches, phones, ipods, ipads, Kindle’s, PC’s cameras, car keys. Infact anything with a battery, oh, and don’tforget your cigarettes and lighters. You can’t take any of this down a mine.Possible build-up of explosive methane gasyou know.

We had already been kitted out with aheavy safe-battery belt and Helmet, withminers light attached for our 300 footdecent in a cramped lift cage to the mineshaft. Now, this is not good if you sufferfrom claustrophobia and yes, one of uswho shall remain nameless suffers fromjust that. Maybe going down into a Mineshaft was not the best thing to be doing. The lady in question however handled theconfined spaces very well.

Having reached the Tunnels we were takena short distance and given a brief safetychat, at which point it emerged thatanother one of us still had their key fobon their person.

It was gratifying to learn that the oldwooden pit props holding up the roof ofthe Mine would tell of an impendingcollapse by giving off warning soundswhich the Miners ears got attuned to. Thenew steel props which we were standingnext to don’t! They just give way. Cue ashuffling of feet towards a woodsupported area!

On the way to Big Pit we stopped nearBurford to pick up some leather clad bikerchick waiting at a Bus stop complete withHelmet and Gloves. So, Russell took Ruthon board and we continued to a fuel stopon the Gloucester ring road and then on toHarts Barn, just beyond Gloucester, for abreakfast. I had phoned in advance butthe message didn’t get through and thereception was a little cold. However we allgot served without problem and an apologyfor their initial panic was given, so allended well.

10 Bikes and 15 people. Not a bad turnout.Thank you to all who enjoyed the day andespecially to Jane for being just a perfectTail!

For those who braved the rain, wind andhail stones only a few made the weekendtrip. Plan visit the town of Battle, to seethe reenactment battle of Hastings onSunday.

Cold and slightly damp the first arrivedFriday evening. On Saturday byanother couple in afternoon with therest arriving around 5 o'clock. All meetinglater for dinner Andy informed us thatthe battle had been cancelled due toenactment ground being rain soaked.

Oh well plan 'B' Brightonnia. We all lefton a cold Sunday morning heading toBrighton, some wanted to see Eastbournebeachy head while others made they waydirect to Brighton. As it turned out theweather was dry and bright at Brighton

and a very good turn-out by all bikes.Trade stalls, Marque tent with exhibitsvery interesting and a few live bandsplaying along the Brighton front. Best laidplans, next year give it another try, possibly.

Film Review: The Loveless1982- Colour- 85 minutesWillem Dafoe, Robert Gordon

“You never can tell on a day like this-things could be goin' jake one minute, then, presto- before you know it, you'rehistory.” Vance

If you enjoy 1950’s retro, moody andatmospheric movies, you’ll enjoy “TheLoveless”. Plot-wise, the film neverdevelops beyond the basic “…bikers rollinto small town cause trouble, leave…”, butthere is a whole lot more to the moviesuch as the incredible retro feel ofSouthern late 1950s, Rockabilly Bikerculture and a great soundtrack. Don’texpect to race through this film atbreakneck speed or experience dragracing down Main street, punch ups oroutrageous terror but rather lingering

scenes of a lifestyle long past and placeslong lost.

Vance, played by Willem Dafoe in his firstmajor role, is an ex con, riding throughGeorgia on his way to Daytona to watchthe bike racing. He is separated from therest of his small ‘gang’ as one of theirHarleys broke down and is going ahead tofind a place where the bike can berepaired. The opening scene has himcoming across a stranded woman with aflat tyre on the side of the road. Vance, like so many of his ilk is an opportunist andwastes no time in taking advantage of hersituation. Finally he arrives at a truck stopdiner on the edge of a small town andsettles down to wait for the rest of thegang.

The story moves slowly, backed with amoody sound track and long, sensuousscenes which create a strong sense oftension building between the dinerwaitress, the owner and other guests. Therest of the gang arrives and the tensionbuilds even more as the heat of the day

slows the pace of everything, the actions, the dialogue, even the music. The viewer isnever quite sure what is around the corneras it is inevitable that events are on aknife edge. The tinder is bone dry, all itneeds is a spark. Enter the way too sexyTelena (Marin Kanter), a fifteen year oldrebel, daughter of the town’s rich bullydriving a red sports car. Vance becomesentranced with the girl and the storyevolves into a more erotic mode. There is aviolent climax to the movie but it is almostirrelevant as the point of the whole film ismore about the suffocating atmospherethan the action. It is worth noting that thestory begins at dawn and finishes thatsame evening, giving a sense that not muchhappened during the day, and yet for thetown’s folk, their whole world changedforever. It is a study of how cultureclashes can create conflict and that blackleather-clad men (and women) on bikes canbe the catalyst for fear and loathing. The leather-clad bikers, their 1950’sHarleys, the rockabilly sound track and theretro scenes make this movie a pricelessjewel for anyone who has any interest inany of these phenomena and I wouldstrongly recommend viewing.

The Loveless was directed by MontyMontgomery who went on to work on TwinPeaks and Katheryn Bigelow who went on towin an Oscar for her 2008 movie, ‘TheHurt Locker’. Much of the movie’sexcellent sound track was written byRobert Gordon.Good viewing,

Ian

Blazin’ SaddlesWell, Nij & I were lucky to get tickets tothis brilliant rally. The first organised bythe new committee of The New ForestBranch, we booked one of the 100 holidaycaravans on the Sea View site nearWeymouth, the venue for the rally andstarted planning. We were to shareaccommodation with Elaine & Ray and thisworked out very well.

I drove the van as Nij was not sure if hisleg would hold out ... luckily it did ... so Iwas able to take luggage for both ThamesValley and Oxford chapter members.

We met up at Chieveley services nearNewbury and ably led by Don Wibberleyset off for Weymouth. The guys stayeddry for most of the ride but suffered forabout five minutes of REALLY heavyrain.

After a lunch break we arrived at thesite around 15:00 and were checked inby the new Forest guys with one of themost imaginative rally packs I have everseen in 20 years of HOG rallies. Wereceived as well as our pins andprogrammes, a tin of baked beans, atoilet roll and a cowboy hat ... Blazin’Saddles indeed! Oh, there was a freephoto taken by Snakes pics as well.

So many old friends were there, it was aback in time moment for both Nij & me.We had lots to talk about and catch upwith, not to mention a few drinks and goodfood on Friday night.

Saturday dawned bright and we joined theparade for the ride around the area andthen into Weymouth. We were greeted bythe “crew” with bacon rolls before we setoff and then had a really well organisedride with police escort for an hour.

Back to the site and we persuaded Nij toenter his Glide in the ride in show. At 22years old she is still beautiful ... to usanyway ... and the judges must havethought so as well, he took Best Tourerand also Best in Show. He was so surprisedthat when it was announced he said “Oh

s**t” which made the mayorlaugh. Made even better whenhe had his photo taken withher and introduced her as hisMum ... her husband loved thatJ

Saturday night we sat aroundand talked, danced in the halland generally had a greattime.

Sunday Nij & I went toSwanage for a ride and met

with several other HOG members includingAndy Spindlow who was determined tohave an ice cream no matter what theweather.

Sunday evening gave some of us a chanceto rest and recover. Nij took a young ladywho was on site with her husband andfriends for a ride down to Weymouth andthen it was time to pack up for home.

Causie and Andy also liberated a heliumballoon in the shape of a pair of cowboyboots for me ... thanks guys xx

Thanks so much New Forest for abrilliant weekend. The sun shone for mostof it and we are looking forward to thenext one

Oh, I forgot ... Robbie was there and wasPARTYING, not working for a change ...nice one RobbieTrish
