Our first official ride since things have eased up was on June 7th to Chef’s drive-in restaurant in Alta
Vista, VA for lunch, and then the Dairy Freeze for ice cream. What a turnout! 30 motorcycles and 34
members along with a beautiful day to ride. RV-HOG picked up the tab for the ice cream. It was great
to see old and some new members. (Photos by Kathy Summers and Leita Boynton)

Mark Anderson, Director Hello everybody. I hope everyone is doing well as we work on getting back to normal a little bit at a time. So, here’s some good news— our food coordinator (Kenny Wingfield) has gotten us back on our Sunday morning breakfast rides, after searching for a month to find someone that would take us. Starting July 12th, 9a we will meet at The Green Goat in the Wasena Park area. Way to go Kenny! We still need to protect ourselves. We have been going some where on Sundays every weekend, we have been to Floyd, Brook-neal, Altavista, Danville, and Staunton for lunch and of course ice cream. On the ride to Altavista, there were 30 bikes and 34 mem-bers. We swamped this little Drive-In, but they thanked us for the business. The ride theme for June was Drive-In’s and we managed to get in 3. The ride theme for July will be BBQ and in-stead of going on Sunday we will leave the Dealership on Saturday KSU 10a to ride some-where for BBQ, most rides won’t be more than 200 miles. We shouldn’t have any problem finding one of those restaurants, but I will try and find a few that you might not have been to before. So watch out for emails. The RVHD MDA fundraiser will be here before we know it. The date is August 15th starting at Roanoke HD and ending up at Belmont Park. We really need to get out and drum up some donations. A donation of $100.00 or more will

Assistant Director:
Randall Maxwell, Assistant Director Hello everyone. I hope everyone has been enjoying some riding this past month. It’s hard to believe that this year is half over, but that means we still have another half a year to ride. There are a few overnight weekend rides coming up and I invite every-one to come out and ride. Make sure to look at your emails and the HOG Newsletter for the dates and hotel information. We have a block of rooms for OUR Roanoke HOG Chap-ter, so make your room reservations ASAP with the Hotel as there may be limited space available. One of those weekends OUR HOG Chapter is riding with the LOH Ride to the Smokies. Riding the Cherohala Sky-way and The Tail of the Dragon. Another overnight weekend is to Little Switzerland in North Carolina. There are a lot of day rides and get togethers also coming up. I hope to be seeing and riding with everyone soon. Keep sending Marian photographs of your private rides for the Newsletter!

get the business name on this years T-shirt. I have been to all the Lowes and Home Depot in the valley an have had lack luster luck, the South Roanoke Lowes donated a big stainless BBQ grill which we will auction at the event. If you have items you would like to donate for the auction, please bring them to the July meeting. It’s going to be a tough year trying to get donations, but we will just have to do our best. And let’s not forget our Chapter fundraiser, tickets are available, we got off to a slow start I hope we can make it up, you could be the lucky winner. Get your RVHOG e-mails out of your junk mail so you don’t miss anything.

Greetings and happy July! This month we will look at a brief history of the dealership itself. The Roanoke dealership first opened in 1914, not long after Harley-Davidson itself began. The location of the very first dealership in Roa-noke was on Campbell Avenue and the business was owned by Milton Minfee. Mr. Minfee was owner until 1922 at which time two brothers, Ed and John Whaley, took ownership. The dealership moved to Centre Avenue in the 1950s and also changed ownership in 1953 with John Butterfield taking over. Loyd Shiffer pur-chased the dealership and the doors were opened as Roanoke Valley Harley-Davidson in 1983. In 1995 the Shiffers were able to move operations to the current location on Pe-ters Creek Road and an expansion was completed in 2002, almost doubling the size of the building. Both the showroom
area and the service area were expand-ed. Loyd Shiffer is now the longest stand-ing owner of Roanoke Valley Harley-Davidson, having been in the business for over 37 years. Today, we stand ready to help with all your Harley needs-come by and see us!

I hope all of you have been doing good with this virus and lockdown. The time has finally come that we can get back to some normalcy by riding and getting back to our monthly meetings. I hope to see everyone come out and enjoy chapter events and the company of other chapter members. The emails have not been going out much with having to cancel a lot of events, but now be on the lookout for lots of emails as some of our upcoming events and also some might have been rescheduled. If you are hav-ing problems with receiving emails please check your spam and trash folders as some of my emails have gone there or other folders as some members have told me. If you check all that and know for sure emails have been sent please feel free to contact me and I will see what I can do.

July is a great month to ride, especially in our area. Trips on the parkway through the mountains, or riding to the beach, or riding to another rally. Not a weekend goes by that we won’t be riding, so let us take a few precautions. PRE-RIDE CHECKLIST 1. Check the tire pressure and tread depth. 2. Check the hand and foot brakes. 3. Operate your headlights to ensure they are clear, bright and pointed in the right direction (most states require you can see an object 200 feet away and have the lights pointing at an angle 7 feet right of the center line 100 feet away). 4. Check your indicator lights for operation. 5. Compare your fluid levels to previous rides and top them up when necessary. 6. Check under the motorcycle for signs of oil or gas leaks. 7. Ensure if you are carrying cargo that it is secured and the load is balanced. Adjust the suspension and tire pressure to accommodate the extra weight, if necessary. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Dress for the slide, not the ride. Wearing a DOT-approved helmet is the best protection for your head in a serious motorcycle crash. Look for the DOT symbol on the outside back of the helmet. Some motorcycle helmets include plastic face shields offering protection from wind, rain, insects, dust and stones. You must wear eye protection if your helmet doesn't have a face shield. Be sure your arms and legs are completely covered when riding a motorcycle -- wearing leather or heavy denim is ideal. Not only does protective gear shield you during a crash, it also helps prevent de-hydration. Shoes or boots should cover your ankles and wearing gloves will protect your hands while giving you a better grip. Also, wear brightly colored clothing with reflective material to make you more

Finally the weather has become nice and I trust everyone is getting some saddle time in! The group has had some great rides these last couple weeks. I hope everyone is planning to attend our ride to Pinnacle Rock, (open ride), on July 11, (July 12th rain date). We plan KSU at RVHD, upstairs, at 10 AM and will be making a stop in Narrows to place lunch or-ders to pick up from A Taste Of Memphis, (Online Menu) or if you prefer, bring a brown bag lunch. There is a great picnic spot for us to enjoy! I am excited to let you know that the ar-rangements for the LOH Dragon Ride are in place and area as follows: This is an open ride, meeting at the Shell station in Christiansburg, across from The
visible to others on the road -- especially at night. Have a great time and be careful out there now, ya hear?
