    J. W. Hisey, one of the substantial men of Waynesville stands

very high in his community, and deservedly so for he has proven his

    worth

    as a

    man and

    a citizen in

    many

    ways.

    He was born

    in

Wa yn e township, W ar re n county, O., J an ua ry 6,

    1849,

    a son of

John and Rachel Ridge Hisey. John Hisey was born in Wayne

township in 1821, a son ofJacobHisey, who came to Warren county,

O., from Virginia, in 1818, and located in Wayne township, where

he purchased at different times, small tracts of land, until eventually

he was one of the extensive landowners of Warren c oun ty . Rac he l

Ridge was born in Warren county, O., about 1823. John Hisey was

    r ea re d in

Wayne township and the re spent

    his life.

    He

    divided

his time between tilling his farm and preaching the gospel, and

    for

    over forty years was one

    of

    the

    beloved

    pastors

    of Warren

    county.

    His

long and useful life ended w ith his de ath in 1897,

    bu t

the weight of the influence he exerted

    both

t hr ou gh his ser mo ns

    and in his

    upright

man ner of living, sti ll exi st s and

    may

    be felt in

    the

i mp ro vement of the morale of his commu ni ty , and

    the

    character

    of his descendents. J. W.

    Hisey was rearer under

    the

    d ir ect car e

of his excel lent f at her, and

    after

completing his s tudie s in

    the

    dis

school. In 1871 Mr. Hi sey was united in Marriage with Miss Ella

Creswell, a daughter of Samuel and Margaret Card) Cresswell,

natives of Virginia and Warren county, respectively. Mr. and Mrs.

Hisey became the parents of two children, namely: Margaret, who

is Mrs. Albert Shutts; and Mary Earl, who is deceased. For many

years Mr. H isey has been engaged in general farming, and he also

    raises a good

    grade

    of stock, his place

    being

    one of

    the best

    im

    proved

in his township His daugh te r and her

    husband live

    on

    this

    farm. In politics Mr.

    Hisey

    is a R epubli can,

    and

    he

    has been

    a

member of the school board for the past forty years. Fraternally he

    affiliates

    with the Waynesvil le

    lodge, I. O. O. F. The

    Free Will

B ap ti st chu rch of Way nesv il le h ol ds his membership , and receives

his generous support. A conscientious man, Mr. Hisey has always

    lived up to

    what

    he believed to be his

    duty and

    has

    never

    asked

    more

    of

    anyone

    than he was

    willing

    to render himself. His

    indus

    try

    thrift

and str ic t hones ty

    have

    always

    recommended him to th e

    commendation

    of

    those w ho h av e

    been

    associated with

    in busi

    John

    D. Hoff.

    The agricultural

    activities of

    John

    D.

    Hoff

    have

covered a period of some fifty-six years in

    Warren

    county, where he

has large interests in Deerfield township, and during this time he has

    established himself

    as a

    capable and industr ious tiller

    of th e soil

and as a public-spirited and useful citizen.

    The

    family of which he

    is a

    representative

    has a

    number

    of

    important

    connections in

    the

    agricultural

    community

    of

    Warren

    county,

    where

    he

    was born

    in

    1863,

a son of John and Mary Ann Dill) Hoff. His grandfather

on the paternal side, Reube n Hoff, was an early arrival in

    Warren

    county where he

    rounded

out his career as a farmer an d his father

    John Hoff, was born reared

    and

educated in t hi s community

    Here

    he was

    married

    to Mary

    Ann

    Dill,

    born

in the s ame locality, a

d au gh ter of A lexand er Dill, one of the sturdy pioneers who assisted

    most

productive in the Miami valley. Alexander Dill on his arrival

    from New

    York,

set tled on a tract of

    wild

    land in

    Deerfield

    town

ship which he improved and to which he added until he had 360

acres. He was a man of progressive methods

    and

    modern ideas

    and

    during

his lifetime erected a good brick house

    and

    barn

    which

    today are characteristic

    of

    the

    sturdy

    character

    of

    their

    builder as

they are still in a sound state of preservation. It is rel at ed of A le x

    ander

    Dill

that on one occasion desiring to attend to some business

    matters in

    New

    York he

    made

    the

    entire trip

    on foot

    although

    other

members in his party traveled by team. After the ir marriage Mr.

and Mrs. J oh n Hof set tled on the Dill farm where Mr. Hoff con

    tinued

    to carry on

    agricultural operations until

    his d eath

    October

23 1899. He was one of the good farmers of his day and a man

universally r es pect ed in his community for his many sterling quali

    ties.

    On the

    farm mentioned,

    John

    D. Hoff was

    initiated

    into

    the

    mysteries

    of progressive farming

    and

    in

    the meant ime secured

    his

educational training in the country schools.

    When

    called

    upon

    to

make a choice of ca ree rs he

unhes itat ingly set tled upon farming

    as his

    life_

    work and has

    had

    no reason to

    regret

    his choice as in

    this

vocation he has found prosperity and contentment.

    In

    the

    property there

    are

    156

    acres,

    farmed

    jointly

    by Mr. Hoff and his

    brother

Alexander , who makes his home with him. The farm

    boasts

of modern improvements and is highly cultivated being a splendid

producer under good management. While a Democrat in his polit

ical views Mr. H off is inclined to be som ew ha t liberal.

    His

    only

public officehas been that of school director in which he served ably

    for

    a number of years. Mr.

    Hoff

    was married

    June

    4 1891 to Miss

    Lelia Beedle

    daughter

    of S amuel

    and

    Laura Bunnell Beedle na

    tives of

    Warren

    county, and a

    family

which is well connected in th e

county where were born Charles Beedle Mrs. Huff s great-grand

    father Samuel Simpkins

    her

    great-great-grandfather and Isaac and

    Hester

Lamb Bunne ll her m at erna l gra ndpa re nt s. Mr. and Mrs.

    Hoff are

    th e parents of two

chi ld ren: Ber tha, now Mrs. Lawrence

Davis residing w it h her

    parents ; and

Mar y now Mrs. Lisb on

    Ireton, living

    near

    Mason, O.

Homer D. Hollcroft. Shrewd business capacity special adap-

tiveness to his vocation appreciation of his calling s many advan

tag es and a firm belief in his own abil it y to succeed have placed

Homer D. Hollcroft among the leading promoters of agriculture and

stock raising in the Lebanon vicinity of Warren county. From

the fertile soil of this locality his hands have brought forth ample

    means

    and his present status

    among

his fellow-citizens is that of a

    financially

    strong and morally high

    farmer

    Mr Hollcroft

    belongs

to one of the old and honored families of this part of

    the

    Miami

valley and was born in Warren county in 1865 a son of John and

    Mary J. Walter Hollcroft.

    His

    paternal grandfather was William

Hollcroft a native of Pennsylvania who in young manhood mi

    grated to Warren

    county

    and

    established

    his primitive home

    among

those of other pioneer settlers rounding

    out
