It was an all-St. Louis final in the championship game of the Arctic Blast Tournament which was held over the Martin Luther King holiday at several rinks in the area.

The Chesterfield Falcons won their round-robin games against the Winnetka Warriors (4-3) and the Columbus Blue Jackets (5-0) while the Affton Americans defeated the Blue Jackets 7-2 and tied the Warriors 1-1.

Affton won the round-robin game against the Falcons 5-2 and then defeated Chesterfield again in a dramatic final 2-1 at Chesterfield.

“It was especially satisfying to beat the Falcons in the finals because we had not beaten them all season,” Affton coach Gus Jacoby said. “I think we tied them once and lost two close games.”

Chesterfield seemed in control of the cham-pionship game with a 1-0 advantage with time running out.

“It was a lot of good up-and-down hockey and

both goaltenders played really well,” Jacoby said.Affton was finally able to get the equalizer with

less than four minutes remaining in regulation as Jack Larigan scored on an assist from Cameron Jacoby.

The Americans followed quickly with what proved to be the game winner as Jack Dapron scored with an assist from Joey Rancilio.

Chesterfield pulled its goalie in the final minute and had a face-off deep in the Affton zone but Larigan won the key face-off. The Americans were able to clear the zone and the Falcons did not have a quality scoring chance.

Defense was the key to the tournament champi-onship for the Americans.

“We played very good defense in the round-robin portion of the tournament and then we knew we needed to play especially well defen-sively in the championship game,” Jacoby said. “We had not seen Chesterfield in a while but we

knew they had a lot of speed. We had to protect the middle of the ice and do a good job on the defensive end. We did the job and pre-vented them from having a lot of good scoring chances.”

And when the Falcons did threat-en, the Americans got a great game from goalten-der Andrew Atkinson.

“Andrew is certainly one of our better players and he was the best player we had in the tourna-ment,” Jacoby said. “He was very solid. He never gave up a soft goal and he made some key saves when needed.

“I thought the whole tournament was a good

team effort. The guys played well from start to finish.”

Affton Squirt AA Americans are Andrew Atkinson, Mason Budde, Jack Dapron, Mario DiMaggio, Cam Jacoby, Gabe Kiene, Ben Kremer, Jack Larrigan, Justin Massara, Joey Rancilio, Brodie Reinholz, James Wiley, AJ Williams and Ben Winkelmann.

How do you define the difference between a playmaker and a sniper? Fox forward David Kelley, this week’s AIC Player of the Week, may just fit both terms. A sniper is a player known for his goal scor-ing abilities. Kelley led Mid-States with 30 goals. A playmaker you say. Well, Kelley added 30 assists to pull his point total to a league high 60 points. So

he does fit the definition of a play-maker as w e l l … a player that has e x c e p -

t i o n a l speed and skill that is able to create chances for his teammates.

The 5’9’, 150 pound, junior, was a valuable play-maker for the Challenge Cup bound Fox Warriors this year, as they finished 15-4-2. Kelley’s uncanny ability to see the ice and what is happening around

him make him a perfect fit in the playmaker’s role but his ability to score goals has made him a valuable sniper this year.

“Along with Jordan (Bratton), the two have brought the Fox program back from the dead,” said first year Fox coach Dennis White.

“And David is a premier player in this league. He had a great season for us,” added White as Fox prepares for its St Louis Blues Challenge Cup playoff games.

This weeks Joe Boccardi’s Hockey Stop Team of the Week is the C h e s t e r f i e l d Falcons 8U ADM Red team coached by Cory Kraft.

In last week’s Artic Blast tournament at the Hardee’s Iceplex, the Falcons finished the tournament 8-0-1 bring-ing home the half-ice team championship. C h e s t e r f i e l d defeated the Nashville Admirals 2-0 in the cham-pionship game with goalie Kendall Johnson earn-ing the shutout in goal.

The Chesterfield team participates in the ADM or American Developmental Model of USA Hockey, which promotes the integration of half-ice practice and games into youth hockey. The basic goals for the 8U ADM skaters is to pick up the basic skills while having fun playing hock-ey. And it was a fun weekend for the mighty Chesterfield squad.

“We embrace the ADM model put forth by USA hockey, and we believe skating is the core

skill needed to go forward to a higher level in the game. About seventy percent of every practice skating, edge work, and basic skating fundamen-tals are emphasized,” said Kraft.

Team members for the Chesterfield 8U ADM team are Will Gebhardt, Kendall Johnson, Gabe Kraus, Logan Krei, Andrew Payne, Jack Plager, Jacob Ney and Tate Roberts.

Coaches are Corey Kraft, Kevin Plager, and Mark Kraus.

Teams may submit a picture and contact info to the Hockey Stop ([email protected]) for future consideration for Joe Boccardi’s Hockey Stop Team Of The Week.

Stumbling after a strong start at this year’s Arctic Blast, coach Larry Bumb’s St. Peters Spirit regrouped as a team to take home the Bantam A1 division cham-pionship. The tournament, hosted by Chesterfield from Jan. 18-20, included many familiar opponents.

“It was really well put on,” Bumb reflected of the Arctic Blast. “Chesterfield does a really good job with the tournament. The teams were very good. We played very well. We were fortunate to come out on top.”

Bumb’s team defeated the Affton Americans 5-1, the Quad City Ice Eagles 3-1 and their rival St. Peters Bantam team 4-1, in round robin play. The Spirit faltered against the Chesterfield Falcons, but skated with them to a 1-1 tie and securing the Spirit a seat in the division championship.

“We tied Chesterfield,” Bumb explained. “It by far was our least strongest game and Chesterfield played really really well. It was a close game, they pulled their goalie and scored with about 19 seconds left to tie it. They did a great job not giving up and kept com-ing at us.”

The tie surprised Bumb’s Spirit.

“Luckily after that game we got a wake up call and played a much bet-ter team concept and won from there,” he said.

The team’s play landed them again opposite Affton, for a championship rematch.

“Luckily for us, when we played the champion-ship game, we played that (team) system very very well,” Bumb recalled. “We were on the big rink at Chesterfield and that suits our game better. We’re def-initely more about speed, using the ice to our advan-

tage. Physically we’re a small team, and that ice and that situation is really good for us.”

Bumb’s win-ning strategy, he

shared, is about puck possession and team play.“I’ve had most of these kids for three years,” he

said. “We’ve kept emphasizing a puck possession team play system and when it’s on we do very well. We get a lot of scoring from everybody on the team but it is definitely a team contribution. Of course every team’s got their better players but everyone buys into our system. They’ve been buying into it for quite some time and we keep improving on this style of play.”

The final ingredients for his team’s overall 25-4-2 success is great defense and goaltending, Bumb said.

“We have very good goaltending and very good defense, he said. “We emphasize the defensive zone first and it definitely showed in the tournament. We do not give up a lot of goals. In our season we’re averaging giving up less than one goal a game and it

carried over to the tournament.”The Spirit’s success against Affton will have to

continue at least once more before the end of the season.

“The very last game of our season is against the Affton team and it’s a tight race for first place for the league,” Bumb explained. “That last game of the year could be the deciding factor for who comes in first.”

Undefeated Squirt A1 Falcons Fly Through Competition

If you ask head coach Jim Carrico about his team, he’d tell you their success is from a lot of hard work and a little bit of luck.

“We have a really good group of kids that want to learn and they come to work,” he explains. “We don’t have any superstars, it’s not like on some teams when you’re like ‘this kid has got to score for us to win,’ that’s not the case. They all come and they work. So far it’s worked for us.”

The Chesterfield Falcons Squirt A1 team has a league record of 10-0-0, with 53 goals scored and 19 goals against in league play this season, and no opponent could best the team at the recent Arctic Blast tournament held Jan. 18 and 19 in St. Louis.

“We’ve gotten lucky,” Carrico reasoned. “Out of the games that we’re 10-0, there’s four of them that we’ve won by one goal. They could have gone either way. We’re just on the right side of the fence.”

The Falcons, in the Arctic Blast tournament, defeated the Peoria Jr. Rivermen 7-0, their rival Chesterfield team 5-3, the Winnetka Warriors 3-0 and Peoria again in the championship 4-0.

“The other Chesterfield team gave us a good game,” Carrico said. “We ended up winning 5-3 but it was a very hard fought game and when we played Peoria, the first game, we beat them 7-0 but that score was not an indication of the game. I think the turning point in that Peoria game was when it was 2-0, and they came down, one of their players hit the crossbar. I think had that gone in, it would have been a different ball game.”

Despite what the record might reflect, Carrico feels his team is a true A1 team and not just play-ing down a level to win.

“We’ve played three AA teams and lost to all three of them,” he explained. “So when people say we need to be a AA team, well, we’ve played against three of them and lost all three times. If we were beating every team 10-0 or 8-1 then I would say we’re in the wrong division. We’ve got ten wins now but almost half of them are by one goal.”

The Falcons have four more league games before the season ends.

“We play this Saturday against Twin Bridges and then next Friday against our other A1 team,” Carrico outlined. “Then, we play back-to-back (next) Saturday and Sunday, against the Rockets.”

Carrico said the double header against the St. Louis Rockets should be good.

“The Rockets are right behind us in second place,” he explained. “They’re a really good team, they play us physical which is the right way to play us and make the referee make the calls. If the referee doesn’t, it works for them.”

The Falcons will also play in the President’s Cup tournament, held over Presidents’ Day weekend in Nashville, before the end of season playoffs begin Feb. 22.

ST. LOUIS BLUES CHALLENGE CUPIn what could become one of the tightest race

to the cup in recent memories the 44th edition of the Mid-States Winter Classic kicks off this week with many marquee match-ups. The 12 teams that comprise the St. Louis Blues Challenge Cup starts off with a bang with a Kirkwood-Oakville match-up and finishes with a top seeded CBC-Fox battle next Thursday. Following the preliminary round next weekend, the eight schools that survive the three game sets will move on to the quarterfinals and the championship game will be played March 3 at the Scottrade Center at 8:00pm.

For undefeated and top ranked CBC (20-0-1), the road to the finals could take a path through Metro conference rivals DeSmet (16-3-2), Chaminade (15-3-2), and defending champions SLUH (13-5-3). The Spartans of DeSmet appeared to have returned to prominence this season behind a trio of top forwards Charlie Combs, Trent Frederic, and Jeff Makowski. DeSmet was the league’s first cham-pion in 1972 and they will be looking for a 15th state title.

Chaminade is still looking for its first state cham-pionship but a stout defense led by Ohio State recruit Bradley Johnson, Jacob Debus and Adam Roeder should push the Red Devils into the semi-final round. Seniors Michael Parisot and Luke Radetic lead the way with 15 goals apiece, while senior Jake Carothers, chipped in 26 points mov-ing to forward this season to bolster the attack. Chaminade opens the tournament with DeSmet tonight at Queeny Rec Complex.

Defending state champion SLUH is still a threat to repeat coming in at the fourth seed in the Challenge Cup. The Junior Billikens sport one of the league’s stingiest defense to go along with two experienced goaltenders in Joseph Warnecke and Brenden Haselhorst. On the backline, seniors

Stan Pawlow and Jack Kinzel have logged big min-utes while sophomores Stephen Lockwood and Andrew Ott have helped SLUH allow only 42 goals this season, second only to CBC’s 15 against.

“Being the defending champion we know any-thing can happen in a playoff series. This could be a real fun couple a weeks around the rinks with a lot of teams breathing down the neck of the favor-ites,” said SLUH coach Kevin Fitzgerald referring to rival CBC, who SLUH will open up the playoffs tonight at Affton.

CBC comes into this year’s tournament a big favorite, thanks to a powerful offense and the league’s top defensive corps. Up front seniors Joey Lupo, Glen Ryan, Mike Beckham and David Hibbard hope to lead the Cadets to a title that alluded them a year ago in a 2-1 loss to SLUH. Senior netminder Joe Staeley has been outstanding and seniors Mike Sieckhaus, Ryan Croghan and Alex Clark head up a veteran defensive unit.

Lindbergh, the fifth seed, and division counter-parts Oakville and Kirkwood all have potential final four teams. Kirkwood is dangerous with a pair of power forwards Kole Mudra and Dustin Smith to go along with senior goalie Jacob Bopp and top defenseman Michael Davies. Lindbergh features a potent offense and an emerging standout in nets in Sam Stephens. Oakville is a veteran squad who lost to CBC in this year’s preseason Top Hat Classic finals.

As for as a sleeper, Vianney could play the role with senior defenseman Chris Brown and Nolan Wuesthoff in front of an experienced goaltender in senior Brendan Shuck and emerging scorers in Nick Allgeyer and Ben Wingbermuehle.

WICKENHEISER CUPSeckman (11-9-1) grabs the top seed in the

Wickenheiser Cup and will rely heavily on a pair

of proven scorers. Senior Jacob Champaign (16 goals, 14 assists) and Frankie Melton (22 goals, 10 assists) lead the way for the top seeded Jaguars while slick skating Brian Schumacher is Seckman’s top blue-liner.

Rockwood Summit finished 13-5-3 and will look to seniors Cole Peterson and Devin Mayer to lead the way to a second Wickenheiser Cup final appearance. Peterson (22 goals, 15 assists) and junior Shea Mullaney (15 goals, 18 assists) are Rockwood’s top threats.

Lutheran South is the third seed and the Lancers 8-12-1 rely on a trio of sophomore forwards, Brandon Rowbottom, Tanner Glaub, and Mitchell Moellenhoff have had breakout years for South while goalie Taylor Rhodes has been a brick wall in the nets.

The fourth seed in the Wick is Francis Howell North (9-8-1) and potential spoilers could emerge from Eureka, Marquette, or Ladue. The Ladue Rams scored 95 goals this year and could surprise led by seniors Colton Schalk (28 goals, 16 assists), Matthew Gould (18 goals, 26 assists) and senior back-liner Joseph Tackes (12 goals 17 assists).

FOUNDERS CUP1. PARKWAY WEST2. NORTHWEST3. FORT ZUMWALT SOUTH4. FORT ZUMWALT NORTH5. CLAYTON6. MEHLVILLE7. WHITFIELD8. FORT ZUMWALT EAST9. WEBSTER GROVESThe Parkway West Longhorns (10-9-2) and high

scoring forward Nick Balestra (27 goals, 16 assists) should advance to the Founders Cup final and look for Northwest to join them in this year’s final. The Lions (9-10-2) are led by forwards Christian Cooley (22 goals, 11 assists) and Brendan Frazier (16 goals, 20 assists)

Good luck to all 37 teams in this year’s Mid-States High School Hockey playoffs.

Meeh To Springfield To Finish Season

St. Louis Jr. Blues defenseman Kyle Meeh was signed by the Springfield Jr. Blues of the NAHL last week and will finish the 2013-14 season with them. Meeh had been given a tender offer for the 2014-15 season but was given the opportunity to practice and skate with the Jr. Blues during an off weekend for St. Louis. After playing two games this past weekend, the Springfield Jr. Blues decided to make the move for this year rather than tender Meeh for next season.

St. Louis Head Coach Chris Flaugher said, “We were lucky to have Kyle as long as we did this year. We were not expecting him to be back in a St. Louis uniform this season. But his presence in the line-up and in the locker room, with so many young

players and rookies, put us in a position where now we are in contention for the division title.”

Meeh comment-ed, “This has what I have been working towards for the last couple of years. I just want to prove I can play at that level and higher. Springfield is giving me that opportunity and I am excited about the opportunity.” This past weekend, in 2 games, Meeh notched an assist and had a chance to shoot in Springfield’s shootout loss to Coulee Region.
