Hobonny Plantation 825.9 Acres in Beaufort County South Carolina

Hobonny is an original rice plantation located between Charleston, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia in an area known as the ACE Basin. The plantation lies on the south side of Combahee River and is surrounded by other historic plantations such as Twickenham and Bonny Hall. This is one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the state. The cities of Charleston, Savannah,

Hilton Head and Beaufort are easy drives. By boat one can be in Beaufort in forty five minutes.

The Combahee area was first settled in the 1680s. Before the Yemasee War of 1715, land was set aside for the Yemasee Indians along several rivers including the Combahee. The Combahee River bordered and supplied the water for some of the largest and most productive rice plantations prior to the Civil War including Hobonny which was established in 1733. Rice was planted here and shipped to markets by barge and schooner until after the war. Remains of slave houses and tabby stone foreman’s houses are still on the property. Hobonny, like other plantations, fell on hard times after the war and many were

purchased by northerners for duck and quail hunting. In the 1900’s Hobonny became a duck hunting club owned by a group of Savannah businessmen and is owned today by the family of one of the Club’s early members.

The property contains upland fields and woodlands, low hardwood areas, rice fields, small creeks and canals. Not only is this landscape spectacularly beautiful, it has a rich variety of all types of fish and wildlife. Forty nine acres of the rice fields are

diked and controlled for planting grains for ducks. The ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge is close by offering a resting area for all types of migratory waterfowl.  The hunting lodge was built about 1910 and overlooks the rice fields. The interior is

charming containing high ceilings, fireplaces and heart pine floors.

It is important to recognize that Hobonny traces its property title back to the Kings Grant so it is one of the few plantations that can keep all of the rice fields and canals on the property totally private.

THE ACE BASIN

The Ashepoo, Combahee and South Edisto (ACE) Basin represents one of the largest undeveloped estuaries on the east coast of the United States. The ACE Basin consists of approximately 350,000 acres of diverse habitats including pine and hardwood uplands, forested wetlands, fresh, brackish and salt water tidal marshes, barrier islands and beaches. The basin's unique estuarine system, the largest of its type in the state, provides invaluable habitat for a rich diversity of finfish and shellfish

resources. The area was once inhabited by the Combahee Indians, a sub‐tribe of the Coosawhatchie River People.
