MAY 2013 2 Club Aims The Club encourages walking, skiing and similar outdoor activities, and promotes interest in the preservation of flora, fauna and natural scenery. Joining the Club Persons aged 16 years and over can apply for prospective membership. To become a full member, three qualifying walks and an Essential Skills Day have to be completed within 12 months of joining. For further details visit the Club website or contact the Membership Officer, Geoff O’Hara (03 6272 1225). Risk The Club is a group of people who enjoy bushwalks and similar activities, with trips organised on a voluntary basis by and for Club members. Every trip coordinator is an unpaid volunteer who organises the walk for fellow Club members. They are not paid professionals with commensurate training and responsibility. Thus each trip member is responsible for their own safety, suitability of equipment and personal skills. Members and visitors take part in Club organised activities at their own risk. The Club does not offer qualified first aid. Club activities involve inherent risks and dangers. The published Walk Previews grade the level of difficulty and distance, and may indicate some risks. However, unanticipated and unavoidable hazards can occur which result in serious injury or property loss/damage. For example, weather can be unpredictable and change quickly, tracks become treacherous and accidents can happen. Liability Members acknowledge and agree that in applying to become a member (of whatever grade) or renewing that membership of the Club that the nature of the activities carried out by the Club and by participating voluntarily, freely and at their own risk, are such that it would be unreasonable for the Club or any of its members acting on its behalf to be in any way responsible for any injury, or death, to members or to damage to their property and members hereby, to the full extent permitted by law, waive all of their legal rights of action against and fully release the Club for loss, damage or injury or death or loss or damage to property howsoever arising out of or in relation to member’s participation in the activities conducted by the Club including without limitation, liability for any negligent or tortuous Act or omission or breach of statutory duty on the part of the Club, its office bearers or agents. Insurance and Legal Matters The Club insurance covers public liability, excluding member-to-member events, during Club activities. Members' vehicles are not covered. For further information write to the Secretary on constitutional or legal matters and the Treasurer on insurance matters. We wish her a speedy recovery and seeing her back on the track as soon as possible. We had our last exec meeting on 26th March. The members only section of the website progresses slowly. We are waiting for the developer to iron out the issues that he has with the Brisbane Bushwalkers site before we go to the next stage. Alison is putting useful bushwalking information about pack weights and lightweight meals on the web. She would love more contributions. Car Stickers are now available with the slogan “Get Outdoors Hobart Walking Club”. Malcolm Sherlock has them. The ABC interviews conducted at the February general meeting with members have not been aired yet. A message from Vicki I have had a couple of offers of help, but as yet (at typing this note!) not trained anybody for the job. Thanks to Kate and Rupert for putting your hands up! Training begins soon. As I am planning to walk the Overland Track in early June and will be away in Canada in early July - could I ask all leaders of walks and trip programmers, to please get their previews and all Forward Walks listings into me prior to end of May for the Walks Program up to and including 5 August 2013. It would greatly help to have as much data on the computer early, thus making light work for my 'relief' person. Previews may be sent via email for speed and ease (yours and mine!) and well ahead if you know the date on which you wish to lead. Do provide all relevant details. Rupert Manners, President

However, come with your day walking gear so that you can participate in the exercises around the area. Sunday will be a normal day walk starting from the Steppes.

You can come up on Friday afternoon/night and join us around the fire, or drive up on your own on Saturday, planning to be there by 9:30 am. Meet at 8 00 am in Fitzroy Gardens. OVERNIGHT & EXTENDED WALKS 22 -23 Jun Winter Solstice – Dobson Hut Midj Jones WALK REPORTS Eves Peak - Mar with Carolynne Smith A pearler of a day, thoroughly enjoyed by a group of 12, including a visitor from Switzerland. Old Lake Fenton Track - Mar with Bob Wyatt This trip was supposed to be to view the Prionotes along this old track. A private trip earlier in the week found none in flower, so we substituted a walk along the track beside the Lachlan River. It proved to be very slow due to the nice ripe blackberries along the way! Lunch at a new table near where the Lachlan runs into the Derwent. I will reprogram the trip when the Prionates are in flower Opossum Bay - Mar with Rob Hill The day being hot, we shortened the route and simply went down the Opossum Bay Beach to the Dart Memorial and over the hill to Mary Ann Beach. A stiff breeze and the cool shadow under the pines gave us respite. Climbing the cliff we enjoyed the fabulous views and lunched with Mr Dart. A final walk back along the beach with two of our party enjoying swims along the way. A great little walk. Ida Bay - Mar with Kay Mallinson Under perfect autumn skies 14 walkers left Deep Hole for lunch and a swim at Southport Lagoon. The day warmed further as we ascended sandhills and made our way back for another swim at Deep Hole. Afternoon tea back at Ida Bay was followed by a stop at Dover. Mt Victoria /Sophia Peak - Mar with Paul Geeves This was a trip to two small peaks near Tullah. On the Saturday we walked in and established a base camp near the foot of Victoria Peak. On Sunday we did a day walk out to Sophia Peak and on Monday we walked out with a group of four visiting Victoria Peak

MAY 2013 26 before walking out. The weather was very hot and water scarce. This was an enjoyable trip except for the heat. (Whew, it was hot! - adds the typist who was on the walk!) Western Arthurs Taster - Mar with Carolynne Smith We had a lovely time. Four undertook this journey - one had been on the traverse before, one had been just past Lake Cygnus previously and two were totally new to the area. We had a nice camp at the base of Moraine A, where we enjoyed balmy evenings with the mozzies. The group were able, determined and keen to attempt to reach Lake Oberon so an early start was had on Sunday. We were greeted with heavy, low mist and a mild temperature. The mist did not rise at all apart from a very fleeting glimpse of Lake Cygnus and a view of the plains on our descent of the moraine. Cliffs and overhangs ethereal in the mist. We enjoyed the plants and insects and sounds (no wind by the way). Lunched at Square Lake after 5.5 hours. Decided it best to retreat knowing that similar effort would be required for our return journey. We spent just over 11 hours on our sojourn and loved every minute. No need for wet weather gear all weekend. The party said they felt they well and truly had a good ‘Taste of The Arthurs’ and view the traverse with an avid sense of adventure and respect. North West Cycle Tour - March with Linda Cook It is a privilege to lead tours in this area of Tasmania because of its stunning scenery plus the joy of sharing those moments with fellow cyclists for their first time. Nine intrepid cyclists were lucky on this tour not to have headwinds or heavy rain to contend with and of the two hot days where we had some character building climbs to deal with were merciful to us. The highlights would have to be the many Cook's coffee stops, a gourmet lunch, many counter meals and the swims in rivers, pools or the ocean on most days, we really did it tough! Congratulations to our Debutantes, Mary, Grant and Nick. Lost World - Mar with Rob McGregor Mizzle is a fine old Scot’s word and that’s what greeted us at The Springs and cocooned us for the rest of the day. The route to the Lost World is always challenging but with our insulating mizzle, the climb up, around, under, over and through the broken and shattered polygonal extrusions of dolerite had (despite some explanation, expletive and chatter) an eerie silence providing a fine entry to a lost world of subterranean ferns and mosses overlain by the mighty shards of some geological ozeeymandis. Snowy to Wellington - March with Rupert Manners The plan was to walk from Snowy North to Mt Wellington and this we succeeded in doing. We were dropped at the start of Snowy North and headed up the hill in mist and drizzle. After Snowy North we traversed the Snowy range over Scrivens Cone, Wetpants Peak , Nevada and onto Snowy South. We spent the first night near Scrivens Cone, the second night at Lake Skinner. This part of the trip was lovely with great weather and views although lack of water was always on our mind and we had to carry some we collected from a tiny puddle on the range.

MAY 2013 27After Lake Skinner we headed directly for Lonnavale through a mixture of forestry roads and scrub bashing. The fourth day we headed to the back of the Wellington range. Again we took a reasonably direct route using a mixture of forestry roads and scrub bashing. Navigation was a bit tricky as roads which were on the maps weren't there and vica versa. The fifth day was a tedious day- we walked 29 km on forestry roads. Water again was an issue so we visited Billy Brown Falls hoping to get some. We ended on a cliff overlooking where the falls were supposed to be with not a drop of water in sight. We eventually met a friendly 4wd driver on Jefferys Track who told of a little spring about a 1 km away. The final day we made it to Wellington over Mt Charles and Mt Connection. It was an interesting trip and well worth doing but the 29 km of Forestry roads in the middle is unlikely to make it a popular trip. Thank you to those who joined me for this adventure. Cathedral Mountain - Mar with Alison Street An enjoyable walk! Good company. Great views and the weather exceeded our expectations. On a hot afternoon we followed Moses Track to Chapter Lake, then climbed up past Grail Falls to a campsite on Chalice Lake, where some of us enjoyed a swim. From here we did an excellent day walk to Cathedral Mountain, Twin Spires and Bishops Peak. It was a hot day. Fortunately there was plenty of water in the many tarns on the edge of the plateau. On arriving at Bishops Peak we were treated to the sight of a spectacular thunderstorm on Mt Ragoona, so we expeditiously headed down back towards Chalice Lake. Luckily we arrived back at the tents before the storm reached us. We were up before dawn the next day, getting ready for a long circuitous walk around Mt Ragoona, via Cloister Lagoon and Meston Hut, to Lake Myrtle. On the way, some of the party climbed Mt Ragoona, from which the cloud cleared in the late afternoon, which made it almost an 11 hour day. On the last day we had an easy walk out to the road via Lake Bill, where we had left a car, ready for a short car shuffle. Coningham Circuit - Mar with Heather Hurd Forecast of 33 C was exceeded on the day, climbed Sheppards Hill early using a rarely climbed ridge. The top was a welcome sight for the group. Followed southern boundary to Pear Tree for delightful lunch spot. Coast road used for the return with five members swimming at Coningham. Lots Wife – Mar with David Dedenczuk A Flashwalk - Facebook. The Friday was the only day with cloud which suited the long march over the plains and up the side of Sarah Jane. Some deep mud near the Lake Judd turn off - thigh deep, as discovered by the co-ordinator. All party members weary by the time of reaching camp at Judd’s Charm. Saturday, clear and sunny. Lots Wife climbed first - with a safety line proving woeful in the 5 m steep gully. Lot climbed second on a hot afternoon. Day ended with a swim in the lake. Wonderful trip.
