ABOUT US “HERO”, the brand name symbolizing

the steely ambition of munjal brothers, came into being in 1956. The Hero Motors has grown at an accelerated pace and marked its remarkable presence with a diverse product portfolio. Today, O. P. Munjal Group Of Companies has displayed impeccable credentials with a turnover of 2300 Cr. Through a distinctive B2B and B2C model, the company is progressing in the path of progress. Hero Motors is manufacturing top-notch gears and transmission systems in its world-class plants with the most modern machinery.

PRODUCTION OF GEARS :1. GEAR CUTTING : The material between conjugate

tooth is removed by machining. The material removal is complete in each instance as a result one by one tooth form is produced.

Gear cutting method follows the LAW OF MACHINING.

1) GEAR MILLING

2. GEAR GENERATION Whereas in Generation all the

locations where the material should be machined are machined simultaneously. As a result in an intermediate machining time all the tooth are partially formed. The generation may be along the width or along the depth

Gear generation follows the LAW Of GEAR MESHING along with METAL CUTTING PRINCIPLE.

1) GEAR SHAPING2) GEAR HOBBING

Page 11: hml report

GEAR MILLING : set the cutter rotation. Feed the job against the cutter upto required depth. Feed the indexing attachment with the job upto required distance.

DRAWBACKS : The accuracy of gear is not very good. sources of erros : Non uniform spacing and Error in profile.

Page 12: hml report

GEAR SHAPING : Reciprocating motion of cutter(rack or circular), Meshing motion of cutter and blank and feed motion of the cutter are provided simultaneously.

Rack cutters are cheaper but due to frequent resetting is uneconomical, so Circular cutters are preferred. This method is known as Universal Gear generation method as all type of gears spur and helical (also internal and external) of all industrial size can be made.

Page 13: hml report

GEAR HOBBING : Motion of cutter and blank are matching motion of Worm and Worm wheel. Feeding of the job is continued until whole length of gearing is coverd. For each module different cutters are available.

Cutter is costly due to manufacturingdifficulties. But due to rapidness ofcutting and better tool life, in mass production cost becomes much lesser compare to other methods.

It is not possible to generate internalgears by hobbing.

HEAT TREATMENT :

PRE WASHING

PRE HEATING (at 450 C, 2hrs) CARBURISING (905 C-910 C, %C=0.95, 85mins) DIFFUSION (905 C, %C=0.70, 40mins) CASE HARDENING HARDENING (840 C, %C=0.65, 30mins)

QUENCHING (oil temp=110 C, 10mins) POST WASHING (50mins)

TEMPERING (at 180 C, 2hrs)

SAMPLE INSPECTION

SHOT BLASTING

PERFORMANCE OF GEARS : It depends on accuracy of cut and the surface property i.e. Hardness. As all the machining to mfg the gear is done on unhardened blank, hardening is necessary which likely to induce certain geometric errors. Gear shaving and Gear burnishing may be employed followed by Grinding.

GEAR SHAVING(BROACHING) Gear shaving is the method to

remove the minute amount of unwanted material from the gear prior to heat treatment.

GEAR BURNISHING(METAL FORMING) Gear burnishing works on the principle

of Cold Working(metal forming) which simultaneously gives the correctness of the profile as well as surface hardening.
