A er taking home a gold at both the SAM Awards and the Vancouver Island CARE Awards, Zebra Design Group scooped Best Residential Renovation $800,000 and Over with their spectacular whole house makeover in Victoria’s upscale Oak Bay neighbourhood. For this remake, they stripped an existing house down to the studs then moved it temporarily to the property’s far right side. On the far le of the property they built a new foundation for the full-height basement and signi cant addition, then moved the house a second time to its permanent location.
“ e owners truly had a conscience about this renovation,” says designer Russ Collins. “ ey could have simply torn it down and built a new house, but they felt that would be disrespectful to the neighbourhood. is way, we preserved the home’s scale and proportion, plus opened up a huge, sunny outdoor area beside it. e result is stately but not pretentious.”
is year marked an exciting rst for the Georgie Awards and the many homeowners who live in condominiums — the debut of two new categories addressing the challenges speci c to a renovation where strata and structural restrictions limit structural changes. Best Condo Renovation Over $200,000 went to My House, while Averra Developments Inc. took the gold in the Under $200,000 category.

ENTHUSIASM AND EXCITEMENT C CKLED THROUGH THE AIR AS BC’S TOP renovators, builders, and marketers gathered to celebrate the 2010 Georgie Awards on March 5, 2011.
For almost two decades, winning these awards has been considered the premier achievement in BC’s vibrant residential construction industry. And with British Columbians spending over $7 billion annually on home renovations, competition for top honours in the dozen specialized categories out of the total 46 Georgie Awards was intense. Nominated projects ranged from traditional to cu ing-edge, 21st Century modern — a balance many felt re ected the true diversity of BC’s top performers.
t h e e n v e L o P e P L e a s e
Fresh from a three-way win at the national SAM Awards only two weeks earlier, My House Design/Build Team struck gold in four categories including the coveted Residential Renovator of the Year — one of only two Grand Georgie Awards for
renovators. “Part of this award is a customer service poll of our clients,” says Graeme Huguet. “ e survey showed we were ranked in the top three per cent for service in BC, and in the top ve per cent out of all of Canada.”
CCI Renovations’ president, John Friswell, says the company’s open, ongoing communication was key to winning this year’s Customer Choice Award, the evening’s only other renovation Grand Georgie. “With all the home shows and TV makeover programs, people want someone they can trust,
Under $100,000.
