In m y cons ulting w ork , I love it w h e n a h e alth profe s s ional re cogniz e s th at along w ith a clinical s olution to a proble m , th e y m ay ne e d an inform ation (or ‘re s ource ’ or ‘k now le dge ’) m anage m e nt s olution. For e xam ple , I w ork e d w ith nurs ing call ce nte r m anage rs to h e lp th e m re cogniz e th at th e ir clinical s taff w e re doing a lot of inform ation m anage m e nt, and to de ve lop a k now le dge m anage m e nt s trate gy for th e organiz ation. W e cre ate d a ne w pos ition, th e re s ource nurs e , and gave th e m training and oth e r tools for m anaging inform ation. In th is ins tance , I h e lpe d th e m to re th ink th e ir proble m th rough an inform ation m anage m e nt le ns , and th e n to find th e righ t pe ople , th e righ t te ch nologie s , and to de ve lop ne w policie s and proce s s e s . Many of us find th e s e cons ulting role s in our organiz ations .

At th e s am e tim e , I th ink th e re is als o a re turn to th e library as a place , particularly in large librarie s – a public s pace , a place for conne cting, a com m unity ce nte r. W ouldn’t it be nice if librarians could form partne rs h ips w ith oth e r profe s s ionals and provide s e rvice s jointly? W h y not m ix diffe re nt inform ation m ode ls – and h ave in a public library, a librarian providing acce s s to a range of re le vant m ate rials , w ith a s ocial w ork e r or a nurs e or a le gal aid w ork e r coach ing s om e one to z e ro in on w h at th e y ne e d and to unde rs tand th e conte nt?

10. W h at is th e role of librarie s s h ould be in de ve loping lite racy?Th e re are m any lite racie s – from functional lite racy re q uire d to ge t along in daily life – to m e dia, com pute r, h e alth , financial, le gal, inform ation, e tc. Librarie s are good advocate s for lite racy s e rvice s . For e xam ple , librarians w ork w ith patie nt e ducators to cre ate plain language broch ure s , acq uire library m ate rials at various re ading le ve ls , s e le ct alte rnate form ats (DVDs , audio, oth e r language s ), and re fe r pe ople to appropriate s e rvice s .
