“We had the privilege of bringing the Africa New Life Children’s Choir from Rwanda, to HIYF and what an amazing experience we had. Not only did the choir get to sing in some amazing andhistorical venues, but being able to mix and get to know other performers from around the world was fantastic. Lifelong friendships were made. The choir, having never performed outside of theirhome country of Rwanda, found the whole experience life changing and really opened their eyes and imaginations to the possibilities they have in the future around music and performing arts. The Festival really was an inspiration to them and they are all hoping and praying they can come to the Festival again in the future” Cat Ross – Rwanda Child

Ripon Cathedral, built in 672AD, is situated just 10 miles north of Harrogate. The opportunity to perform at this beautiful venue is often commented onas a highlight of the Festival for many visiting ensembles. The naturalacoustics of this grand religious building offer choirs and orchestras thechance to create intimate passages as well as great climaxes.

The Choral & Orchestral Concert is always attended by the Mayor of Ripon and thereforetradition is upheld by the “interruption” of the Ripon Hornblower. The official role of the RiponCity Hornblower is to support the Mayor and safeguard the ancient ceremony of ‘Setting theWatch’, which has been carried out for 1,127 years and is the only ongoing daily ceremony ofits kind in the world. The ceremony is performed every evening at 9pm without fail and has notever been missed.

The cathedral plays host to the massed choir performance. This beautiful and moving event isa great performance opportunity for students from across the world to perform together instunning surroundings of great historical significance.
