In the last 10 years we have worked with over 35,000 children and young people.

Welcome to the first Hive brochure of 2015 and another packed programme of events and exciting new projects for the Hive.

Our spring programme offers a vibrant mix of film screenings, live gigs, workshops and children’s theatre, along with a creative environment for people to socialise and share ideas. We are delighted to be hosting The Sea Show, a fun, spellbinding and quirky puppet show for children 4-7 year olds and their families by Squashbox Theatre during February half-term. The Sea Show is the creation of Craig Johnson, an actor, musician and puppeteer, and long-standing member of Cornwall’s renowned Kneehigh Theatre.

We organise funded arts programmes to work with children and young people, some of whom are vulnerable or at risk. Our projects and programmes take place both at the Hive and across Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin. During the next 12 months we will be working on a Youth Music-funded programme of activity in partnership with the Music Education Hubs across the region.

This spring sees the start of our Armed Forces Community Covenant-funded project Connect-Create (more details can be found on page 13).

It is the Hive’s vision to support young people – particularly those who are at risk of living in challenging circumstances. Our aspiration is to develop the role of the Hive as a centre of excellence in delivering arts and cultural events and opportunities for the wider community.

It is getting harder and harder to secure funding for these projects and we need your help. Please donate to our charity so that we can help more children and young people in Shropshire reach their potential.

Please invest in them by sending a text message to 70070, entering HMMA05 £5 to the message field and donating £5. Alternatively you can also send us a cheque or pop in to donate to our collection box.

Please take a moment to check out our new-look website :

Contemporary Responses to War and Fascism

“Boundless” On New Horizons in Art and Being

Dip Shropshire was a series of 8 days of workshops set in some of Shropshire’s most scenic and beautiful wild spots in 2014, linking wild swimming to creativity.

This exhibition is a collection of some of the poems written by the participants of the workshops, and photographs taken by Geoff Ward, Andrew Fusek Peters and Tom Middleton.

All images are for sale at £25 each, and can be ordered through the Hive reception desk.

Collaborative project by Art International Group with special guests (children) from ‘Rainbow’ Art School in Klimovsk, Moscow.

To commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the end of WWII, the exhibition ‘Contemporary Responses to War and Fascism’ dedicates itself to the memories that have become a distant history for our generation; forgotten is the sacrifice made for our futures.

International touring group exhibition curated by Ahmet Özel

The greatest power that shapes our time is undoubtedly the power of communication. It would not be erroneous to name this period “the age of communication,” which has started such a powerful and unstoppable transformation throughout the world that it is impossible for the old or new bastions to resist it.

In this new age that knows of no limits; art and its reach has extended like never before. We are now encircled by a “boundless” horizon. Art, the true definition of free creation, had never had such an extensive field to express itself.

The Hive in Shrewsbury is delighted to announce that the organisation is in receipt of Armed Forces Community Covenant funding for ‘Connect-Create’; a project working with Armed Forces families and their local communities in Shropshire throughout 2015.

The successful project funding was agreed by the Shropshire Armed Forces Community Covenant Grant Scheme following a series of taster workshops managed by the Hive between April and August this year.

Connect-Create will be offering more than 80 inspirational workshops for toddlers, children, young people and families – both in the Armed Forces and in their local communities, led by experienced professional artists. Working with groups of all ages from RAF Shawbury and Tern Hill Army barracks, surrounding local communities and British Red Cross Young Carers; from toddlers to teenagers.

The Connect-Create creative programme aims to connect Forces families with their local communities through shared interests and experiences and help to raise awareness of the issues affecting the Armed Forces Community.

‘‘The Hive is a fantastic charity and the Community Covenant is delighted to support them. The Hive’s enthusiasm and passion for music is infectious and I’m convinced that this project will bring military and civilian communities closer together. I can’t wait for the project to begin and for young people to get a chance to do something new, innovative and exciting!’’David FaircloughArmed Forces Community Covenant Coordinator
