Alfred HitchcockAlfred HitchcockAlfred Hitchcock is one of the most successful directors of time. He is well know for his master pieces such as the psycho, rear window etc. Alfred Hitchcock selects camera angles specifically to keep the viewers hooked in the movie as the narrative slowly unwinds and unfolds. One of the great example is the pull focus technique used in the film rope where he constantly switch focus between the chest and dinner party to remind the audience that one f he main character has been murdered in the box.https://robertsnow.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/rope-superior.jpghttp://movies11reviews.blogforcash.biz/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/granger-hitchcock-stewart-dall_opt1.jpghttp://the.hitchcock.zone/files/gallery/org/4707.jpgMcGuffins was a techniques used in most of Hitchcock's thriller such as psycho, vertigo etc. where an object or device in a film or a book which serves as a trigger for the plot. An expel, of this would be the rope in the film rope.http://borgus.com/hitch/mcrope.jpghttp://www.tasteofcinema.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/macguffin.jpgVoyeurism is also a technique seen in Hitchcock's films. Voyeurism is the compulsion to seek sexual gratification by secretively looking at sexual objects or acts and makes the audience voyeuristic as the audience see the narrative through the cameras eye.http://www.alfred-hitchcock-films.net/Images/Voyeur-Waltzes-from-Vienna-295x236.jpghttp://faculty.cua.edu/johnsong/hitchcock/images/stills/psycho/parlor-22.jpghttps://eng3122.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/hitchcock_rear_window_gallery_photo_11_new1.jpgFacial expressionHitchcock's movies such as psycho, rear window have many close-ups of facial expression of characters that is frequently used to create a suspense or shock. These are some of the examples from his movies. The use of close ups are very effective as it creates an alarming effect and foreshadows that something's is going to happen.http://media.tumblr.com/36a16da5fa85f76a609034fdbffc3d08/tumblr_inline_mh0bvrAZx61qbz339.pnghttp://cdn.pastemagazine.com/www/articles/hitchcock1.jpghttp://2.bp.blogspot.com/-A09CLWE8mps/UXT7O4r0xRI/AAAAAAAAAIk/KeYQAkI8OAE/s1600/psycho.jpgThe shower scene is psycho is considered as a classic master piece because the use of extreme close-ups without showing any nudity. That particular clip had 50 cuts and features 77 different camera angles. The use of cuts and different camera angles made the scene very scary for the audience at that time. Moreover, the alarming music created a panicking effect which added an extra ambience to that scene. This scene was then used in many other movies in the modern culture as it is a very disturbing and scary scene.http://imstillakid.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/psycho_shower_scene_frames.jpgIn this shot, there is an obscured view of James Stewarts character behind his magnifying camera lens, this adds mystery, whilst focusing on his sceptical eyebrows and narrowed, concentrated expression on the upper half of his face; This all intrigues Hitchcocks audience, and pulls them in, inquisitive of what he is seeing through his lens that concerns him so deeply as we can see from this shot. An eye-line match is used from the previous shot via jump-cut to this shot of the main characters suspicious neighbour he has been spying onhttp://image.slidesharecdn.com/powerpoint-110207064052-phpapp02/95/alfred-hitchcock-analysis-3-728.jpg?cb=1297082541TitlesHitchcock has always been choosy of his movie titles and how it is designed. He usually tries to link the title to the narrative of the plot. Psycho is a great example of this as it has a negative connotation in itself and uses a simple but bold palette of black white and red which connotes to blood and danger, which suits the genre of the film perfectly.Rear Windows title is very dramatic with a contrast created with the black and white despite this being a colour film. The bold type also creates more focus in the viewerAlthough these kind of titles are used traditionally for trailers, I still think they are extremely effective and I really like the way they build up suspense to the actual colour screenplay, or can be used in-between shots related, building up a mysterious narrative.http://borgus.com/hitch/open-psycho.jpghttp://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6IAJNhbK1zY/UNDPP08QEYI/AAAAAAAAAIo/KPmJBGR-HF0/s1600/PsychoO3.jpghttp://www.alfred-hitchcock-films.net/Images/Title-Psycho-004.jpghttp://www.animatingapothecary.com/gapsycho.GIFTop 10 Rebecca (1940) PosterPsycho (1960) PosterThe Birds (1963) PosterRear Window (1954) PosterDial M for Murder (1954) PosterThe Trouble with Harry (1955) PosterI Confess (1953) PosterVertigo (1958) PosterNorth by Northwest (1959) PosterRope (1948) PosterClick to edit Master title style
