    Radford stuff

    The 1940s began with the

    country recovering from the

    depression. The dark clouds of

    Nazi and Japanese aggression

    were spreading through Europe

    and in the Pacific. The United

    States struggled to stay out of

    these conflicts but everything

    changed on December 7, 1941

    with the Japanese attack at Pearl

    Harbor.

    The country was now at war. A

    year earlier the government

    signed a contract with the

    Hercules Powder Company to

    forces overseas, the Radford

    Ordnance Works was operating

    at break neck speed to support

    the war.

    In addition to making powder for

    various guns and cannons,

    Radford also produced powder

    for mortars and rockets.

    Designed to produce 300,000

    pounds of powder per day, the

    facility actually produced 500,000

    pounds a day at its peak and in

    total, produced over 590 million
