• Access to the ARPANET was expanded in 1981 when the National Science Foundation (NSF) developed the Computer Science Network (CSNET). In 1982, the Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) was standardized and the concept of a world-wide network of fully interconnected TCP/IP networks called the Internet was introduced.

COMMUNICATION• Email is an important communications service

available on the Internet. The concept of sendingelectronic text messages between parties in a wayanalogous to mailing letters or memos predates thecreation of the Internet. Pictures, documents andother files are sent as email attachments. Emails canbe cc-ed to multiple email addresses. Internettelephony is another common communications servicemade possible by the creation of theInternet. VoIP stands for Voice-over-InternetProtocol, referring to the protocol that underlies allInternet communication.
