Golf has played an important role in the history of America’s Resort. Few gentlemen played it better than Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson. These greats of the game are also legendary contributors to the history of golf at The Greenbrier. Sam Snead established The Greenbrier as the world’s foremost golf destination. Jack Nicklaus put golf front and center when he redesigned The Greenbrier course for the Ryder Cup. Tom Fazio created an award-winning golf challenge for the private residential community, The Greenbrier Sporting Club. The legacy of Sam Snead continues at The Greenbrier with current Golf Pro Emeritus Tom Watson and his annual 36-hole Pro-Am golf tournament, the “Tom Watson Fall Golf Classic.”

When it comes to great golf, history will always repeat itself at The Greenbrier. Whether you are looking for a course to lengthen your drives, sharpen your irons or perfect your putts, you will find your own sweet spot at The Greenbrier - where experiences are timeless and memories last forever.

The Old White TPC, the first 18-hole golf course at The Greenbrier, opened in 1914. A legend of Greenbrier golf history, the course was named for the well-known Old White Hotel, which stood on the grounds from 1858 to 1922.

President Woodrow Wilson was one of the first golfers to play The Old White TPC Course in April of 1914. This historic course features generous fairways and challenging, undulated greens. Every hole is memorable and has a well defined strategy for success. Whether you prefer a challenging approach or one with less risk, and a higher chance of success, you’ll find it on this historic course.

Charles Blair Macdonald, a dominant figure in the early history of American golf, designed the course and modeled several holes from some of the most famous European holes. The Old White TPC Course’s Hole 8 was styled after the Redan at North Berwick; Hole 13 after the Alps at Prestwick; and Hole 15 after the Eden at St. Andrew’s.

The Greenbrier Course, originally constructed in 1924 by Seth Raynor, was redesigned by Jack Nicklaus in 1977. The Greenbrier is the only resort course in the world to have hosted The Ryder Cup (1979) and The Solheim Cup (1994), both won by the United States.

This 6,675-yard, par 72 course is heavily wooded and demands forced carries onto the greens. The well-bunkered and terraced greens require accurate iron play and talent with the putter. The Greenbrier Course, along with The Meadows Course and The Old White TPC Course, all begin and end at The Golf Club.

In 1999, The Meadows was dramatically upgraded to become a serious test of skill and precision. Most guests agree that The Meadows offers the best photographic opportunities of the 3 courses with its panoramic views of the surrounding mountains in addition to a wide variety of shot-making challenges.

The course shares a massive double green on Hole 18 with The Greenbrier Course and is a true test of skill. Many regional and state championships are contested on it annually. The Meadows Course, along with The Greenbrier Course and The Old White TPC Course, all begin and end at The Golf Club.

Exclusive to members of The Greenbrier Sporting Club, The Snead Course was voted #3 “Best New Private Golf Courses in America” when it opened in 2004. Named after the legendary Sam Snead (1912 - 2002), The Snead was once the location of a landing strip adjacent to The Greenbrier’s golf courses and was part of the early evacuation plan during the Cold War. Today, this members-only golf course has 5 sets of tees, a practice range featuring target greens, simulated holes as well as a short game section including fairway, green and bunker shots.

Oakhurst Links

Built in 1884, Oakhurst Links is a unique 30-acre course, museum and clubhouse listed on the National Register of Historic Places located just a few miles north of The Greenbrier.

Russell Montague, the original owner, learned about golf in Great Britain and brought it to American soil. The first competition at Oakhurst was held in 1888 in the Scottish match play tradition, predating the St. Andrews Golf Club of Yonkers, N.Y.

Today, conventional golf clubs are not used at Oakhurst. Instead, players use hickory-shafted clubs and hit gutta-percha balls off tees fashioned from sand and water the same way it was done more than 130 years ago.

The décor and ambiance reflect the important role that Sam Snead, our first golf professional emeritus, played in The Greenbrier’s illustrious golf history. It is a relaxed, yet lively atmosphere every bit as entertaining as its legendary namesake. The spacious seating areas offer great dining options with an open-show kitchen where guests can watch our expert chefs prepare tantalizing entrées in a wood-burning oven.

Open seasonally, Sam Snead’s at The Golf Club and Slammin’ Sammy’s feature impressive a la carté menus with a variety of choices including salads, steaks, pasta, seafood and hand-tossed pizza presented with engaging service and lively panache.

Sam Snead came to The Greenbrier in 1936. His name has been synonymous with this wonderful resort and White Sulphur Springs ever since. During his career “The Slammer” won a total of 185 tournaments worldwide and a PGA TOUR record 82 championships. Sam played on 10 Ryder Cup Teams and was the Captain 4 times. He was on 4 World Cup Teams and was the first pro in history to shoot a 59, which was at The Greenbrier in 1959.

During Sam’s prime on tour, he could average 320 yard drives, using the equipment of his era - hence the name “Slammin’ Sammy”. During Sam’s years at The Greenbrier, he shot a 60 on The Old White TPC Course 6 times and three-putted the 18th green each time.

Sam was the oldest PGA TOUR player to win an event, which was The Greater Greensboro Open, his eighth time to win that tournament. He had 42 holes-in-one with every club in the bag, except the putter. In 1986 The Commissioner of the PGA TOUR named Sam the greatest golfer of all time. Everyone agrees that Sam had the smoothest and most powerful swing of all time. There will never be another Slammin’ Sammy Snead!

Sam Snead ~ Golf Professional Emeritus ~ 1993-2002

• 82 PGA TOUR Wins

• 7 Major Championships

• World Golf Hall of Fame

• PGA Player of The Year

Tom Watson, winner of 39 events on the PGA TOUR including 8 majors, was named The Greenbrier’s Golf Professional Emeritus in April 2005. The only other golfer to have that honor was the legendary Sam Snead. Tom is the only modern player to win the British open 5 times. He was selected as the Captain of the 2014 Ryder Cup by the PGA of America.

Watson’s major victories include the 1977 and 1982 Masters and the 1982 U.S. Open where his pitch-in from deep grass on Pebble Beach’s Hole 17 sealed his victory over Jack Nicklaus.

Tom has a long history with The Greenbrier. His first visit was in 1979 when The Greenbrier hosted the International Ryder Cup Matches. The birth of Tom’s first child pulled him away just as competition was to begin. The following year, however, he was back as a resort guest, having chosen The Greenbrier for a meeting with his sponsors and business associates. This year marks the 32nd anniversary of Tom’s annual outing.
