Introduction

Ayurveda the “science of life” or longevity, is the holistic science

It is more than 5,000 year old It is one of the oldest scientific medical

systems in the world It is also a way of life that teaches us how to

maintain and protect health

Hindu medicine flourished well period of charaka & susruta.

But after period of ‘Tantra’ and ‘Siddha’ the glories of the Hindu medicine rapidly declined and the golden age of Ayurveda ended

When waves of Muslim invaders attacked the country

The decline became more fast because invaders brought their own healing system

After the Mughals Europeans then French and lastly English persons

invaded the india Dr. Garcia da orta. He was the first european

physicians to describes some indian drugs in (1534)

He was appointed as medical advisor (1554-1555)

In (1833)British East India Company close the Ayurveda school

The first ‘calcutta medical college at calcutta (1835)

‘Grants medical college’ at Bombay(1845) In (1920) ‘Hakim Ajmal Khan’ started Ayurveda

institute at Delhi And ‘Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya started

‘Banaras Hindu Univesity’ at varanasi.

Cont…… The first Health Ministers Conference was held

in (1946)

Govt. of India appointed a committee under the chairmanship of ‘R.N. Chopra’ in (1946)

After independence

Recommendation in the form of a report were published in (1948)

One another committee set up called Dave comitte.

As a result a ‘Central Research Institute in Indigenous System of Medicines was established at Jamnagar (Gujarat) in (1952)

medicine’ Act of Parliament in (1970)

‘National Institute of Ayurveda’ was established in(1976) at jaipur Which is working as a national center for promoting Ayurveda

Research Delhi and Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine was established in(1979)

IN 1995 separate department for Indian system of medicine included in ministry of health & family welfare ,in ministry of India.

Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia was written.
