View of Chamberlain Square - 19th Century
1880In honour of the public service Joseph Chamberlain
gave to the city of Birmingham, a memorial fountain was unveiled as the centre piece of a
new public space, Chamberlain Square.
Paradise is the latest chapter in Birmingham’s
rich and compelling story.
Throughout its history this has been the site of the city’s most prestigious buildings, including the Masonic Science Lodge and
the Birmingham and Midland Institute. Over time, stunning views through the city, and of these buildings, have been obscured and blocked by unsympathetic development.
Paradise is re-establishing these magnificent vistas, forging Birmingham’s
future by building on its past.

A PLACE OF MANY STORIES
The Central Library was the most recent structure to
grace this area of the city.
A building very much of its time, its story ended in 2013 when the new Library of
Birmingham opened. The library was part of an ambitious project to deliver a new
civic centre, which was never truly realised. Paradise picks up this mantle, to start a
new chapter for this prestigious location.
The library was designed by Birmingham-based architect, John Madin. An example of Brutalist architecture, the inverted ziggurat became a controversial highlight of the city’s modernist buildings,
attracting both admirers and critics.
The former Central Library was opened on 12 January 1974, and was designed by John Madin, a Birmingham-based architect.

Between 1974 and 2013, Birmingham Central Library was the main public library in the city, and for a time the largest non-national library in Europe. In June 2013 the Central Library was replaced with the Library of Birmingham overlooking Centenary Square.

Set around historic Chamberlain Square, Madin originally designed the library as one part of a grand civic centre, to also include a School of Music, Drama Centre, Athletic Institute, offices, shops and a pub. Only the library, the School of Music and the pub were ever completed.

An extraordinary and complex development, Paradise is the
most important city centre scheme outside London.
Seamlessly combining contemporary new office, retail and leisure spaces with
Birmingham’s most celebrated listed buildings and new, high quality public realm,
Paradise is place-making at its very best.
The Paradise Masterplan comprises 10 individually designed new buildings and
three new squares set in outstanding public space. Accessibility and connectivity are at the heart of the plan, opening up new vistas
and pedestrian routes across the city.
Paradise is to be completed over three phases, the first of which is underway with two new office buildings overlooking an enhanced Chamberlain Square. Further office buildings, public squares
and a hotel will follow in subsequent phases.

Birmingham is a thriving commercial centre and the driving force behind the success of the wider region.
Businesses large and small choose the city because of its high speed transport links, its leisure offer and its high standard of living. It is easy to attract and retain staff when a city offers this much.
The city is the youngest in Europe, with under 25s accounting for nearly 40% of the population. This vibrancy is being fed by 400 schools, 15 universities and three university colleges within an hour’s drive of Birmingham. The workforce, in turn, is teeming with young intelligent individuals.

Birmingham has always been a city willing to try new things, to innovate. But sometimes, the old ways truly are the best. Dating from 1874, the Council House – with its striking clock tower – has dominated Chamberlain Square for nearly 150 years. The Town Hall, with its classic Victorian architecture, predates even that. Good design never goes out of fashion.

One Chamberlain Square, the first building to be delivered
at Paradise, has been designed by award-winning
Eric Parry Architects.
The building sits at the very heart of the development with 172,000 sq ft
of space to include a huge roof terrace with spectacular views.
Professional services firm PwC has taken the whole of the commercial office space and will relocate its 1,400 strong Birmingham team to One Chamberlain Square in Summer 2019.
