A Brief History behind Air Conditioning

    Air Conditioning: A History

Willis Haviland Carrier was the brains behind the modern concept of air conditioning but before his

invention became a reality, many came forward with the idea of a machine that served the purpose of

cooling, though changes in the design were tinkered dierently to Carriers design. So we can mark

the anniversary of Carriers fantastic invention, were going to take a brief look back at the long story

    and history of air conditioning.

    1758! "en#amin $ranklin and Cambridge %niversity professor &ohn Hadley discovered that the

evaporation of alcohol and other li'uids evaporate faster than water and in turn they can cool down

an ob#ect enough to free(e the water.

1820! )t was a case of d* #a vu for inventor +ichael $araday who made the same discovery as $ranklin

and Hadley some - years later in ngland. /his was achieved through the compression and li'uidity

    of ammonia.

1830s! 0r. &ohn 1orrie makes a huge breakthrough in the case of air conditioning but it comes to no

avail. Whilst working at a $lorida hospital, 0r. 1orrie created an ice2making machine that uses the

compression to make buckets of ice, then blowing air over them. He patented the idea in 3453, with

the dream of cooling buildings throughout the world. 6ack in 7nancial backing was to blame for the

failure of his invention and the world would have to wait much, much longer for 89C.

1881! :resident &ames 1ar7eld is shot by an assassin on &uly - in 3443, so naval engineers built a

makeshift cooling unit in order to keep him cool and comfortable simultaneously. /he device is a

simple design, with water2soaked cloth 7lling the inside whilst a fan blows hot air overhead, keeping

cool air much closer to the ground. /he good news behind the pro#ect is that the device can achieve

lower room temperatures of up to -;$, but unfortunately :resident 1ar7eld still dies. ew ?ork. /he machine is designed to blow

air over cold coils, which can control both room temperature and humidity. /he device keeps paper

from wrinkling as well as aligning the ink where its supposed to be. 8fter discovering that other

factories want to use the cooling technology, Carrier establishes the Carrier 8ir Conditioning Company

    of 8merica.

1906! Stuart Cramer creates a ventilating device that gives the ability to add water vapour to the air in

te@tile factories. /he humidity makes yarn easier to spin and reduces the chance of breakages.

Cramer is the 7rst person to call this process Aair conditioning.B

1914! 8ir conditioning came to the home for the 7rst time in history. /he unit is installed in

+inneapolis, inside the mansion of Charles 1ates. /he air conditioning unit is appro@imately feet

high, feet wide and -; feet long. )ts a great possibility that the unit went unused because no one

actually ever lived inside the house.

1931! H.H. Schult( and &.D. Sherman are responsible for inventing an individual room air conditioner

which sits on your window ledge. /his design is common place in apartment buildings ever since. /he

units are available for purchase and are purchased by those who are least likely to e@perience a

hectic, sweaty life the rich. 8 large cooling system would cost between E3;,;;;2E5;,;;;, which is

e'uivalent to E3-;,;;; to E;;,;;; in todays moneyF

1939! :ackard invents the 7rst air2conditioned car, which allows a rela@ing ride for those inside.

0ashboard controls for the onboard 89C would come later. $or now, given the passenger would get

chilly, the driver would have to stop the engine, open the hood and disconnect a compressor belt.

1942! /he %S builds its 7rst power plant, named a Asummer peakingB plant. )ts built to handle the ever

growing electrical load that air conditioning demands.

1950s! 8fter World War )), the economic boom 7nally happens as residential air conditioning becomes

    available to many.

    The Benets of Air Conditioning

    Full benefts o Air Conditioning

When installing air conditioninginto a residential house or into small business oJces there are a few

things that should be looked into, weKve stated here some of the top bene7ts you can take into

    consideration.

Energy bills account for heating and air conditioning,as well as ventilation

    Top Benefts o Air Con

HereKs a little list of the top bene7ts ofair conditioningwhich we will bene7t you as a user the most!

    edu!tion in "u#idit$

8lthough air conditioning provides accurate temperature control it also has the ability to reduce the

humidity within your building without over2cooling any room.

    Controll%ble Co#ort

/odayKs air conditioning systems allow you to set the perfect temperature for any room within the

building meaning if you wanted your room to be fairly warm but the back room to be colder it can be

set with ease. 8s air conditioning provides a constant level of temperature youKre guaranteed to have

    ma@imum comfort.

    Const%ntl$ &ilent

With newer technology air conditioning systems have become even more advanced today, this newer

technology has enabled air conditioning systems to work in harmony with silent surroundings.

    edu!tion o energ$ bills

8s air conditioningsystems today are build for multi2purpose temperature settings this allows the air

con to be able to be used for heating and cooling whilst running eJciently, in fact up to 4;L more

    eJcientF

    '#pro(e Air )u%lit$

Mesidential air conditioningsystems feature air purifying 7ltration systems which will help reduce

dust, bacteria, fur, pollen and even mites meaning if you suer from allergies then you wont have to

    worry any moreF
