Event Summary

Earhart was the first aviatrix to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

She mysteriously disappeared while flying over the Pacific in 1937.

She set out on a journey and never returned.

World War I

Event Summary

WWI began in 1914 and ended in 1918.

Axis-Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgeria, Ottoman Empire

Allies-France, UK, Russia, Italy, US (+20 other smaller countries)

Nearly 10 million soldiers died. In 1916, Tolkien was sent to

France.

Impacted Perspective

Tolkien served in WWI . He & his friends were sent far from home on a quest of sorts & to fight battles in foreign lands much like Bilbo & his friends.

Tolkien survived his journey, but many of his friends did not.

Industrialization

Event Summary

The Industrial Revolution began in England around 1750.

Before the IR, most people made things by hand.

The rise of factories caused the growth of large cities and massive pollution.

Impacted Perspective

Tolkien loved the environment & opposed the industrialization of England.

This was reflected in his portrayal of the Shire (where the Hobbits live) .
