FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR, FR. THOMAS KOYS, M.A.,S.T.L.

Mother’s Day is a day we honor and remember the special women in our lives who have nurtured, loved and shaped us into the people we are today. It is through their unconditional love that we begin to un-derstand the depth of Christ’s love for us, and his command to share that love with one another. On Mother’s Day, each of us will have an opportunity to share Christ’s unconditional love with the poor and vulnerable through our gift to the Catholic Charities Mother’s Day Collection. For Catholic Charities, charity is not just about providing material assistance, but acting with the same love and mercy that Jesus showed to restore people’s dignity and give them the hope of a brighter future. Catholic Charities counts on our volunteer and financial support to offer compre-hensive programs that get to the root cause of suffer-ing, address multiple needs, and help people rebuild their lives for the better.

Pope Francis has used a powerful image of the Church as “field hospitals.” During war, field hospi-tals are situated right on battlegrounds—close to the wounded who need help. Similarly, as part of the Church in the Archdiocese of Chicago, Catholic Charities 150 service locations are very much like field hospitals, helping those who are suffering, and

located in neighborhoods that have sadly become like real battlegrounds, plagued with violence and despair. Catholic Charities program sites are safe havens in desperate areas and their staff and volunteers are truly ministers of mercy, providing help through a hot meal, a bag of food, a place to live, the care of a child or elderly relative, counseling, job training, job place-ment, or all of these things. Serving nearly one mil-lion people each year, Catholic Charities brings Christ’s love and mercy to the people and the places that need it most. Please accept my sincere gratitude for your past support of the Catholic Charities Moth-er’s Day Collection, and please consider being as generous as you can again this year. Contributions can be made during the second collection on Moth-er’s Day, anytime at www.catholiccharities.net/donate, or mail your gift to Catholic Charities, 721 N. LaSalle St., Chicago, IL 60654. May God bless you and those you love this Mother’s Day and al-ways. With every good wish, I remain

Sincerely yours in Christ, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago

Ascension of the Lord Page Three

In case you missed the invitation in the last week’s bulletin, I wish to invite you to participate in a lit-tle project. I want to collect photos for parishion-er’s Marian shrines and put them in a PowerPoint to have a collection of the many beautiful Marian shrines that grace our homes and gardens. With some luck, it will be used at our 185th anniversary banquet and posted on our website. Please send me a photo (to my email, [email protected], is best) of your Marian shrine.

On another 185th anniversary note, I hope to share tidbits of the early history of St. James and the Catholic presence in Chicago over the next few months. Some information is just interesting for historical value, but a few themes are discovered that are of a deep spiritual value.

In 1821, we read in Fr. Gabriel Richard’s letter a most shocking detail about the way the land, we

now call Chicago was acquired, or purchased from the Potawatomi Indians. “I had been invited by one of the Potawatomi chiefs, who lived near the old Jesuit mission of St. Joseph (Michigan) to be present at a treaty in Chicago which the Indian tribes were going to make at that place with the governor (Cass). Contrary winds having detained me 2 weeks longer than I expected, it fell out that the treaty was over when I arrived. I had hoped to be able to support the Indians in the petition which they were going to present and which they did actually present for a Catholic priest at St. Jo-seph’s like the Jesuits. The outcome of it all was that they were given a Baptist missionary.”

What’s the “take-away”? We need to see that the myth of the savage Indians, who had to be elimi-nated and or sent away because they would not or could not assimilate to the new European settler’s ways is a great fabrication. The Potawatomi and many other tribes, took to Christianity like wel-comed “good news”. That is, when it was present-ed by Catholic missionaries. Today, we need to appreciate the differences between discipleship of a Protestant twist and that of a Catholic twist. A well-formed conscience does just that!
