Well, summer is just about over and I hope everyone enjoyed their Vipers as much as I did. This summer I drove thousands of miles on mine. I did a little unofficial study on September 18th while driving back from Montgomery, AL for my son-in-law's graduation from the Office Training School at Maxwell Air Force Base where he became a Captain in the Air Force. Between Montgomery, AL and Findlay, OH I counted 12 Corvettes, 20 Muscle Cars/Street Rods, 1 Lamborghini, 1 Rat Rad and 0 Vipers. So, any one new to the club or to the Viper can now see why the Viper is such a unique car. Also, shows why we all get a thumbs up and pictures taken of you and the car. It's just a shame that the car doesn't hold its value and it should. We should all start pricing the used ones up to show their true value. This summer, the club had a lot of great events. I'm hoping that everyone got to enjoy them since this was the Ohio Viper Club's 20th Anniversary. The Officers and Directors really tried to go all out for the members. You will see some of the events highlighted in the upcoming Viper Quarterly, so be sure to check out the articles and catch a glimpse of your car. We still have one event for the year - that is our Fall Party on October 24th. We have a few surprises to make the event memorable, including a tour of a race shop and some SRT guests. You will see some new questions on the renewal form this year, so hopefully you will work to help improve the club with answering these. The forms will be coming out shortly, along with the sign up for NVE2 in New Orleans. Make sure you mark your calendars to attend NVE2 and join Ohio's caravan down to the event; it is one Viper event you don't want to miss out on. Ohio is usually one of the top 5 clubs for attendance, so let's keep that Ohio support strong. We are putting together our calendar for next year and would ask that members submit pictures of your Viper. Pictures can be submitted to Mike Fargo; you may just end up seeing your car featured within the calendar. The board for the Michigan region has recently changed, and they want to start doing more events jointly with Ohio. I look forward to going to events with their members since they are a great bunch and have Detroit in their backyard for Dodge events. So, if any members know now of any events that should be listed on the calendar, please submit them now so both states can start making plans. Next year, our first event will be our Ultimate Viper Party in April. However, I am working on lining up a Viper Plant Tour to coincide with the Detroit Auto Show. So stay tuned for more details. Pitt Race South Track Opening

After two years of planning, designing, moving dirt, spreading stone & hot-mix, the Grand Opening of the South Track at Pitt Race took place on July 10th. Seven Ohio members joined Jim & Kathy Stout in the Grand Opening Events. Jim & Kathy cut the ribbon with their Competition Coupes and the members, with local dignitaries riding shotgun, followed them around the 2.8 mile / 19 turn track. Following the ribbon cutting the members were invited to join the catered VIP lunch at the track's Event Center. Thank you to the following members who participated in the Grand Opening Parade: Bob Bierman, Chris Brubaker, Josh Coyne, John Croyle, Rich & Jenn Kautz, David Meyer and Tim O'Neil. If you have not yet had the chance to visit Pitt Race, you need to make a trip there to check out the wonderful facility.

On July 23rd, the Ohio Viper Club had their Viper Play Day at Pitt Race. It started Friday night with a 2 hour private go-kart track rental, which included heat races and a 16 kart race to cap off the evening. We had 48 club members and friends attend to track their cars. We had access to the new 2.8 mile full course at Pitt Race - both the North and (newly opened) South Tracks. This was a great event for Viper owners to feel the limits of their cars.

The 2015 Mopar Nationals

Every year the Mopar faithful come in from all over the world to visit the one and only Mopar Nations in Columbus. Held at National Trail Raceway, the entire weekend is dedicated to Chrysler Corporation vehicles from 1920’s to current. This also includes, Vipers!!!The VOA was again lucky enough to have the Viper Snake Pit to park the cars, as well as the Jegs suite in the broadcast tower. From the suite, you see directly down onto the starting line and can watch the racing in air conditioned comfort. What a way to watch Vipers going head to head!!!Friday also included a cruise to London Ohio where the club was allowed to race our cars for charity on the open streets! The London police close down the streets, and allow various high performance cars to take spectators for charity rides allowing them to experience the pure adrenaline of horsepower! The Vipers were a huge hit to say the least!!!If you have never made it out to the Mopar Nationals, you really need to plan for next year. The Mopar Nationals are always held at National trail Raceway on the second weekend of August.!!This years drag race program was reworked by Race Director, Tim O'Neil, with the intent to get more Viper participation. We had 14 Vipers go head to head in Fun-style Open Bracket drag racing with payouts to those making it to first place, second place and the quarter finals. Tim helped participants throughout the weekend by providing extra helmets and helping people through the Tech Inspection process. At the end of the day the winners were Rich Kautz (1st place), Dave Rauske (2nd place), Kevan Geier (quarter finalist) and Bob Hess (quarter finalist). All participants had a great time and are anxious for next year. Tim would like to thank all the drag race participants and the resurgence of Viper drag racing at the Mopar Nationals. !Hope to see you there next year!!

DIY: How to change your brake fluid all by yourself

How to change your brake fluid all by yourself!!!So today I'm going to show you how to change the brake fluid and bleed the system all by yourself. I did this on my GEN IV and it was pretty easy. The method I used involved my four post lift and a couple of jack stands. First things first. Make sure you have plenty of Mopar DOT 4 Brake Fluid (or whatever fluid you prefer) on hand. I probably went overboard but I went through about 5 1/2 pints of fluid doing my system. !!So here’s my method. (Note...the pictures in this article show the front of the car being done.)!!First thing I did was remove the belly pan on my car so the jack stands wouldn’t damage it. Once removed I then place the jack stands just in front of the knuckle of the lower control arms and then lowered my car which is on my four post lift very slowly down onto the jack stands. Once the vehicle begins to lift up I stop the process and then get a breaker bar with a 1/2 in extension and a 19 mm socket and break loose all the lug nuts. I then finish lowering the car until the rear end is completely off the lift ramps. Then you can proceed to remove the rear wheels and get ready for the next step. !!Next we want to remove as much brake fluid from the reservoir as possible. To do this I used a Mityvac MV8000 and sucked out as much fluid as I possibly could. Once you've done that you then want to refill with fresh MOPAR DOT 4 and leave the cap to the reservoir off. Then we head back to the rear wheels and begin to bleed the system. !!The order in which you want to bleed the brakes is Right Rear, Left Rear, Right Front, then Left Front. The GEN IV calipers have two bleeder screws on them. You want to do the inboard one first, then the outboard one, then inboard one again. There is a little rubber boot that covers the bleeder screw, pop that off so that you can gain access to the bleeder screw. !

To bleed the system I used a Mityvac 7400 with the brake bleeder adapter. Makes this job really easy as the canister holds just over 7 liters so you don't have to worry about emptying a little bottle every time you are done with a caliper. Simply pump the Mityvac up, crack the bleeder screw open using a 7/16 wrench, then open the valve on the brake bleeder adapter and watch the fluid be sucked out. You will see the fluid change from dark to clear. IMPORTANT NOTE...Make sure you always have fresh MOPAR DOT 4 fluid ready to go as you do not want the reservoir to go dry. With using the Mityvac you may notice the presence of little bubbles in the fluid which is perfectly normal. This happens because the brake bleeder adapter isn't a perfect fit however it should be noted that the Mityvac isn't letting air get into the system. !!Once you've made your way around the car in the order mentioned earlier you can put the wheels back and button everything up. The next thing to do is to check your brake pedal and make sure it has good pressure. If it falls to the floor after several pumps you have air in the system and have to start over again. If the pressure is consistent after several pumps your system should be free of air and you can road test the car. The first time you take it out make sure you are in an area where there isn't a lot of traffic. Even test the brakes as you go down your driveway just to make sure you have some stopping power. !!Well... I hope this little how to gives some of our members the courage to try this on their own cars. It's a lot cheaper than taking it to someone and you get to spend some quality time with your car!!!
