IMPORTANT! . . . X-RAY PROTECTION

X-ray equipment if not properly used may cause injury. Accordingly, the instructions herein contained shouldbe thoroughly read and understood by everyone who will use the equipment before you attempt to place thisequipment in operation. The General Electric Company, Medical Systems Group, will be glad to assist andcooperate in placing this equipment in use.

Although this apparatus incorporates a high degree of protection against x-radiation other than the useful beam, nopractical design of equipment can provide complete protection. Nor can any practical design compel the operator totake adequate precautions to prevent the possibility of any persons carelessly exposing themselves or others toradiation.

It is important that everyone having anything to do with x-radiation be properly trained and fully acquainted with therecommendations of the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements as published in NCRP Reportsavailable from NCRP Publications, 7910 Woodmont Avenue, Room 1016, Bethesda, Maryland 20814, and of theInternational Commission on Radiation Protection, and take adequate steps to protect against injury.

The equipment is sold with the understanding that the General Electric Company, Medical Systems Group, its agents,and representatives have no responsibility for injury or damage which may result from improper use of the equipment.

Various protective material and devices are available. It is urged that such materials or devices be used.

All electrical installations that are preliminary to positioning of the equipment at the site prepared for the equipment shall beperformed by licensed electrical contractors. In addition, electrical feeds into the Power Distribution Unit shall be performedby licensed electrical contractors. Other connections between pieces of electrical equipment, calibrations, and testing shallbe performed by qualified GE Medical personnel. The products involved (and the accompanying electrical installations) arehighly sophisticated, and special engineering competence is required.

In performing all electrical work on these products, GE will use its own specially trained field engineers. All of GE’s electricalwork on these products will comply with the requirements of the applicable electrical codes.

The purchaser of GE equipment shall only utilize qualified personnel (i.e., GE’s field engineers, personnel of third-partyservice companies with equivalent training, or licensed electricians) to perform electrical servicing on the equipment.

DAMAGE IN TRANSPORTATION

All packages should be closely examined at time of delivery. If damage is apparent, have notation “damage inshipment” written on all copies of the freight or express bill before delivery is accepted or “signed for” by a GeneralElectric representative or a hospital receiving agent. Whether noted or concealed, damage MUST be reported to thecarrier immediately upon discovery, or in any event, within 14 days after receipt, and the contents and containers heldfor inspection by the carrier. A transportation company will not pay a claim for damage if an inspection is not requestedwithin this 14 day period.

Call Traffic and Transportation, Milwaukee, WI (414) 827–3449 / 8*285–3449 immediately after damage is found. Atthis time be ready to supply name of carrier, delivery date, consignee name, freight or express bill number, itemdamaged and extent of damage.

SECTION 1 – INTRODUCTION

1-1 GENERAL

This manual describes the safety precautions that must be realized when servicing the GANTRY and PDU as partof the CT system. These 2 subsystems pose unique potential hazards to the service person. This manual is notgeared for detailed service training, but is written to emphasize awareness to the unique safety hazards facing theperson who services this system.

Danger, warning and caution statements are made throughout the manual with the symbols shown below. In addition,international symbols, shown on the next page, are also used. The definitions of the danger statement, warning state-ment, caution statement and international symbols are described as follows:

DANGERDANGER MEANS THAT THE SITUATION DESCRIBED WILL CAUSE DEATH ORINJURY TO YOU OR SOMEONE ELSE IF THE SAFETY INFORMATION IS NOTOBEYED.

WARNINGWARNING MEANS THAT THE SITUATION DESCRIBED CAN CAUSE PERSONAL INJURY ORDEATH TO YOU OR SOMEONE ELSE IF THE SAFETY INFORMATION IS NOT OBEYED.

CAUTIONCaution means that the situation described may cause personal injury to you or someoneelse if the safety information is not obeyed

NOTICENotice means that the situation described can cause damage to the system hardware/soft-ware or test equipment if the safety information is not obeyed.

1-1-1 LOCK OUT / TAG OUT

In the U.S., or other countries which have an ECPL (Energy Control and Power Lockout) law or similar law as ECPL;or any field engineers who work in sites where a power distribution box with a lockout capability is used,GE service personel must be trained in and use ECPL procedures.

For systems powered from a power distribution box which has a lockout capability,lock out the system power at the main input (Power Distribution Box) prior to any component changes.

1-2 OVERVIEW

DANGERREAD THIS MANUAL IN ITS ENTIRETY PRIOR TO SERVICING CT SYSTEM.FAILURE TO HEED THIS WARNING MAY RESULT IN EQUIPMENT DAMAGE,PERSONAL HARM, HARM TO OTHERS OR DEATH.

This CT Gantry has continuous rotation design for its rotor (Slip–ring type). Therefore, do not service this CT systemin the same way as an alternating rotating system (Non Slip–ring type) such as you did for CT 9000 series, Max series,Pace, and Sytec series, otherwise, you might:

� injure or kill yourself.

� injure or kill others.

� destroy subsystems or the entire system.

� destroy test equipment.

NoteTo reduce the risk from potential hazards, always use appropriate Lockout/Tagout procedures whenservicing the system.

1-3 OPERATOR CONSOLE HAZARD

The following warnings must be observed when servicing the Operator Console (OC).

WARNINGELECTRIC SHOCK AND BURN HAZARD! TURN OFF THE OC POWER SWITCH WHENACCESSING THE COMPONENTS OF THE OC. THIS TURNS OFF THE CONTACTOR WITHINTHE PDU, SO THAT AC115V LINE FOR THE OC IS DISCONNECTED. THEREFORE, ALLPOWER CAN BE THOROUGHLY REMOVED FROM THE OC.

NOTICEElectrostatic discharge hazard. It is essential to link yourself to ground potential by wearingan anti–static wrist strap when accessing any circuit boards within the OC. No board shouldever be accessed without this precaution.

2-1-2 On the Gantry Frame

There are four emergency stop switches accessible when the Gantry covers are removed. (See Illustration 2–2.)To connect (activate) the Emergency Stop Switches after removing the gantry cover, refer to:Functional Check/Adjustment, System, Checks during System Installation, EMERGENCY OFF TEST.

DANGERTHE EMERGENCY STOP SWITCHES ON THE INSIDE OF THE GANTRY ARENOT ACTIVE WHEN THE GANTRY COVERS ARE REMOVED UNLESS THEYARE CONNECTED.

2-1-3 Emergency Stop From the Operators Console

To stop gantry rotation from the OC quickly during an emergency situation, press the OC Emergency Stop Switchas shown in Illustration 2–3.

DANGERDO NOT USE THE STOP SCAN SWITCH, LOCATED ON THE KEYBOARD, TOSTOP GANTRY ROTATION DURING AN EMERGENCY SITUATION. PRESSINGTHIS SWITCH ONLY ABORTS THE SCAN AND THE GANTRY CONTINUES TOROTATE. PRESS THE EMERGENCY STOP SWITCH (ILLUSTRATION 2–3) ORONE OF THE GANTRY EMERGENCY STOP SWITCHES (ILLUSTRATION 2–1OR 2–2) TO STOP GANTRY ROTATION.

2-2 GANTRY MECHANICAL HAZARD

This section describes the potential hazards associated with gantry rotation. Your safety will be compromised if youdo not understand the risks. Please read carefully.

2-2-1 Beware of Gantry Rotation

The Gantry rotates 360 degrees every second. Danger to personnel is highest in the areas on either side of the Gantrywhere objects can be ejected at great velocity when the Gantry is rotating (if the Gantry side covers are removed).

DANGERIMPACT HAZARD!! DURING SERVICING, AVOID THE AREA AT THE RIGHT ORLEFT SIDE OF THE GANTRY WHENEVER THE GANTRY IS ROTATING ANDTHE SIDE COVERS ARE REMOVED. ALSO AVOID THIS AS MUCH AS POS-SIBLE WHEN THE GANTRY IS NOT ROTATING. FAILURE TO HEED THISWARNING MAY RESULT IN PERSONAL HARM, HARM TO OTHERS, ORDEATH.

Illustration 2–4 shows the location of the Axial Drive Switch (Rotate switch) to enable or disable the axial drive motorof the Gantry which is accessed at the gantry rear base.

When All Gantry Covers are removed:On the condition that Axial Drive switch is ON, the Table/Tilt (Control) switch is ON, and the three service bracketsare engaged (Illustration 2–5), the Axial Drive Enable Buzzer continues to sound. This means the Gantry can be ro-tated for scanning whenever you want.

Turn the Axial Drive Switch OFF to prevent it from rotating. Consequently, the Axial Drive Enable Buzzer also stopssounding.

2-2-3 Reset from the OC for Gantry Rotation

When activating the following switches in the OC, the reset signal is transmitted to the TGP board in the Gantry sothat the Gantry will rotate.

� Reset switch of the Host CPU Assy:Resets the CT whole system.

� Power–OFF switch of the Host CPU Assy:Switches OFF only the OC. This mean that the other subsystem (Gantry, Table, PDU...) remains ON.

� Reset button of the DBPCI board in the Nest chassis:Resets a part of the boards in the OC (Keyboard, DASIF, Audio...) and TGP board in the Gantry.

2-2-4 Preparation for Servicing the Gantry

In addition to the warnings stated earlier, note the following prior to servicing the gantry:

� Never work in the Gantry when the Axial drive enable buzzer sounds.

� Never assume that the Gantry will not rotate.

� If the side covers are removed, avoid standing at the right or left side of the gantry during gantry rotation.

� Always lockout/tag the system power line disconnect after shutting off power to the Gantry.

� Look at the position of the Axial Drive Switch (Illustration 2–4). Use this switch to stop the gantry and buzz-er. This switch must be OFF to ensure that the gantry is safe for servicing.

� Always hold the gantry with the Azimuth lock pin during service, otherwise the Gantry may unexpectedlyrotate under unbalanced conditions which occur when components are removed, thus, causing gantryrotation.

WARNINGMECHANICAL HAZARD! FAILURE TO HOLD THE GANTRY USING THE AZIMUTH LOCK PINPRIOR TO REMOVING COMPONENTS MAY LEAD TO GANTRY MOTION WHICH CAN STRIKEA PERSON CAUSING INJURY OR DEATH.

� Always remove jewelry (e.g. watches, rings, etc.), secure clothing and remove any clothing which couldget caught in rotating components.

� Always wear safety glasses.

� Always secure the side covers, front cover, and rear covers of the Gantry and tube hoist rail before tiltingthe gantry.

� Always announce when the Gantry is about to be enabled before enabling.

� Always use the hardware mounting procedures defined in the service documentation.

After servicing the Gantry, note the following:

� Do not leave any tools in the Gantry.

� Be sure that any covers on the Gantry rotating section are on and secured.

The PDU provides 400 VAC to the X–ray Generator subsystem via the slip ring in the Gantry. Illustration 2–7 showsthe XG power (440VAC) control switch on the Gantry rear base. The switch is used to open the System Safety Loop;when this Loop is opened, the K1 contactor in the PDU is turned OFF, disabling the 400V AC supply.

SECTION 1 – EMC

1-1 EMC PERFORMANCE

This CT system may characteristically cause electromagnetic interference with other equipment, either through airor connecting cables. The term EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) indicates capability of the equipment, whichcurbs electromagnetic influence from other equipment and at the same time does not affect other equipment withsimilar electromagnetic radiation from itself.This product is designed to fully comply with the group 1,Class A of EN60601–1–2 (IEC60601–1–2), in EMC regula-tions.

Proper installation following this service manual is required in order to achieve the full EMC performanceof this product.

The product must be installed as stipulated in [1–2. Notice upon Installation of the Product]. In case of issues relatedto EMC, please follow procedures stated in [1–4. Countermeasures against EMC–Related Issues].

1-2 NOTICE UPON INSTALLATION OF THE PRODUCT

1. Use either power supply cords provided by GEMS or ones designated by GEMS. Products equipped with powersource plug should be plugged into the fixed power socket which has the protective grounding conductor. Con-nect a three–pole plug to a three–pole socket without using a three–pole–to–two–pole converter.

2. Connect the permanent grounding equipment to the protective earth terminal of the place where the protectivegrounding conductor of the equipment is set up.

3. Locate the equipment as far as possible from other electronic equipment.

4. Be sure to use either any cables provided by GEMS or ones designated by GEMS. Wire these cables followingthese installation procedures.i.e. Wire power cables separately from signal cables.

5. Lay out the main equipment and other peripherals following these installation procedures.

1-3 GENERAL NOTICE

1-3-1 Designation of Peripheral Equipment Connectable to This Product

Use the optional peripheral equipment, as designated by GEMS, to satisfy EMC requirement. Avoid using other equip-ment than designated by GEMS. Failure to comply with this instruction may result in poor EMC performance of theproduct.

1-3-2 Notice against User Modification

Never modify this product. Unilateral User modification may cause degradation in EMC performance. Modificationof the product includes;

a. Changes in cable (length, material, wiring etc.).

b. Changes in system installation / layout.

c. Changes in system configuration / components.

d. Changes in means of fixing system / parts (cover open / close, cover screwing).

1-3-3 Others

Operate the system with all covers closed. If you open any cover for some reason, be sure to shut it before starting/ resuming operation. Operating the system with any cover open may affects EMC performance.

1-4 COUNTERMEASURES AGAINST EMC–RELATED ISSUES

Generally it is very difficult to grapple with issues related to EMC. It may take much time and cost.

1-4-1 General Countermeasure Electromagnetic interference with other equipment(s)

1. Electromagnetic interference may be alleviated by positioning other equipment(s) far from the system.

2. Electromagnetic interference may be mitigated by changing the relative location (installation angle) between thesystem and other equipment(s).

3. Electromagnetic interference may be eased by changing wiring locations of power / signal cables of other equip-ment(s).

4. Electromagnetic influence may be reduced by altering the path of power supply for other equipment(s).

1-5 NOTICE ON SERVICE

1. Ensure that all screws are tight after servicing. Loose screws may cause the degradation in EMC performance.

2. In case the RF gasket of this system is broken, replace it with a new one immediately.

CLASS 1 EQUIPMENT

Any permanently installed equipment containing operator or patient accessible surfaces must provide backup protec-tion against electric shock,in case the BASIC INSULATION fails. In addition to BASIC INSULATION,Class1 equip-ment contains a direct connection to a PROTECTIVE(EARTH) CONDUCTOR which prevents shocks when a persontouches a broken piece of equipment or touches two different equipment surfaces simultaneously.

TYPE B EQUIPMENT

CLASS I, II, or III EQUIPMENT or EQUIPMENT with INTERNAL ELECTRICAL POWER SOURCES provide an ade-quate degree of protection against electric shock arising from (allowable) LEAKAGE CURRENTS or a breakdownin the reliability of the protective earth connection.

ORDINARY EQUIPMENT

Enclosed EQUIPMENT without protection against the ingress of water.

OPERATION 0f EQUIPMENT

CONTINUOUS OPERATION WITH INTERMITTENT LOADING.

CLEANING

The system is NOT WATERPROOF. It is NOT designed to protect internal components against the ingress of liq-uids.Clean external system surfaces(Gantry,table,consoles and accessories)with a soft cloth dipped in hot water andwrung DAMP/DRY. (NOT dripping!) IF NECESSARY, use only mild (dish washing liquid) soap to remove dirt.

NOTICEAvoid damage to equipment! Some ”spray and wipe”cleaners etch and permanently cloudclear plastic surfaces!! Use only warm water and mild liquid soap to clean surfaces.
