FATHER JUAN CARLOS RUIZThe Impact of the Pandemic on New York City’s Undocumented Communities Thursday, Sept. 17 / 12:30 - 1:45 p.m.The New Yorker recently profiled Father Juan Carlos Ruiz in “The Renegade Priest Helping Undocumented People Survive the Pandemic” (8/24/2020 issue).

Back in 1986, Juan Carlos Ruiz joined the flow of people arriving at the Norte from Mexico to reunify himself as an unaccompanied minor with his family. After living in the shadows and legal limbo he was able to obtain his green card just before he got ordained as a Catholic priest. In 2006, Juan Carlos began to organize what has come to be known as the New Sanctuary Movement at the national level and co-founded the New Sanctuary Coalition of New York as a way to accompany and advocate alongside and for families who were being separated by the unjust immigration system. In September 2018 he became the sixth pastor at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Bay Ridge where he lives with his wife, Cinthya Santos Briones and their dog, Tizoc.

Day of the Dead: Tradition and CraftsJuan Aguirre is a resident of Jackson Heights, Queens. He is a veteran of the United States Navy and received a Bachelor of Science from St. John’s University. He has worked for several years serving the New York Mexican community in after school programs, adult education, and immigrant advocacy. Mr. Aguirre is an alumnus from the Coro Immigrant Civic Leadership Program (2011). From 2012 to 2014 he served as a member of the Advisory Council to the Institute of Mexicans Abroad (IME), a detached office of Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE). Currently, Mr. Aguirre utilizes his experience in developing and implementing programs emphasizing traditional arts and culture. Mr. Aguirre is presently serving as the executive director of Mano a Mano: Mexican Culture Without Borders, a non-profit organization.
