StandardsDevelopmentTimeline

• 1990s states began developing their own standards

• 2007 Council of Chief State School Officers began discussions for developing standards

• 2008 CCSSO is joined by the National Governors Association, and Achieve1

• 2009 Common Core Standards (CCSS) development begins

• 2010 Draft prepared for feedback• 2011 States begin review for

adoption

1A bipartisan group of governors and corporate leaders who believed that all students should graduate from high school ready for college, careers and citizenship. They are dedicated to standards‐based education reform.

The CCSS and CRSS Standards are

• Drawn on the most important international models

• Research and input from numerous sources, including state departments of education, scholars, assessment developers, professional organizations, educators from kindergarten through college, parents, students, and other members of the public

• The design and content refined through successive drafts and numerous rounds of feedback

BackgroundCCSS• The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts & Literacy in

History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects (“the standards”) represent the next generation of  K‐12 standards designed to prepare all students for success in college, career, and life by the time they graduate from high school.

• The standards also lay out a vision for what it means to be a literate person who is prepared for success in the 21st century.

Alvin Toffler wrote in Future Shock [1970], “The illiterate of the future will not be the person who cannot read.  It will be the person who does not  know how to learn.”

• The Common Core asks students to read  works of fiction and non fiction, as well as more complex texts that provide facts and background knowledge in areas such as science and social studies.

• Students will be challenged and asked questions that push them to refer back to what they’ve read.  CCSS stress critical‐ thinking, problem‐solving, and analytical skills that are required for success in college, career, and life.

Page 6: HiSET® ELA Reading & Writing for the Common Core · • Maryland State Department of Education MSDE Advanced ... analytical skills that are required for success in college, career,

TheHiSET®TestwasdevelopedtoreflectCollegeandCareerReadinessCCRS• The HiSET® program is aligned with the College‐and‐Career Readiness Standards CCRS for Adult Education released by the Office of Vocational and Adult Education in April 2013.

• The CCR ELA/Literacy anchor standards [grades 11‐12] that the HiSET® Reading and Writing tests measure are aligned to the Common Core State Standards CCSS in ELA.  The HiSET® Reading test  includes the mix of both literary and informational texts as defined by the CCSS.

• The HiSET program incorporates the CCRS anchor standards in the grades 9‐12 grouping into the design specifications for the item pool and the assembled forms.

• The CCSS provide what is desirable for students to learn; the CCRS provide what is essential for adults to know to be prepared for the rigors of postsecondary training, work, or citizenship.

SomePreliminaryThoughtsaboutWriting• The building block of an essay is a paragraph.• The unit of a paragraph is the sentence.

• A sentence is a group of words expressing a complete thought.

How words come together in a sentence (syntax) determines the reader’s understanding of that thought.

• The topic sentence is the controlling idea of a paragraph.• A thesis is the controlling idea of a multi‐paragraph essay.

• Usage and mechanics help improve the effectiveness of sentences and paragraphs.

• Scrambled Sentences—deconstruct words, phrases, and clauses; then have students put back together.

• Sentence Effectiveness—combine several small sentences into on effective sentence. [actually apply Writing Conventions and Language Facility]

ChangefortheEssayin2015

• The current essay prompt directs the candidate to write an argumentative or persuasive essay.

• In 2015, there will be a greater emphasis [in keeping with CRSS] to provide more evidence to support an assertion.  The evidence may come from a text or it may come from the candidate’s experience.

*Once again the importance of a strong reading preparation can be beneficial for the essay.  The candidate will gain multi‐disciplinary knowledge from reading texts.  This knowledge can help provide evidence for the essay.
