If you have had mathematics as oneof your subjects at the 10+2 level orgraduation, you can pursue an MCA(Masters of computer applications) or

a Masters in information technologyand then secure a job in a softwaredevelopment firm. However, IGNOU(www.ignou.ac.in) offers you thechance to do an MCA even if youhaven’t studied maths at the 10+2 level. The only condition is that you arerequired to complete a CS-60 (a mod-ule in computer science courses) in thefirst semester of the MCA programme. The second route would be to completeDOEACC ‘A’ and ‘B’ level courses afteryour graduation.A third route would be to pursue an

MBA (with a specialisation in systemsor IT); or pursue an MCM course(Masters of computer management) ora post-graduate diploma in computerapplications).

which you’ll never work alone. One sec-ond of a 35-mm film can consist of 24frames, but lots of people work on it.Animators work as a team along withseries animators, layout artists, graph-ic designers and the like. Basically, thework consists of making drawings andworking under a supervising animator, who usually gives out the short scenes.Animation scenes are denoted by the

number of feet, so you're responsiblefor a certain amount of footage. Four toeight feet of film will take you about aweek to complete. An animator typical-ly works for 10 hours a day, and often 6days a week, but at times you mayneed to work on weekends and worklate nights too. You may even have toforgo a vacation if an important projectis at hand. For a bright career in animation, you

need:■ A good hand at sketching■ Strong imagination, visualisation, and illustration skills.■ Good ideas and the ability to commu-nicate them.■ Those who are artistic, creative andinnovative stand a better chance ofshining in the field.■ Also, mastering the basics of script-writing, stop-motion photography, digi-tal visual communications and imageediting would be a definite plus. You can join a diploma course after

Class 10 or a degree course after Class12. However, if you are talented, youcan pursue training under a profes-sional and your academic qualificationneed not be considered.

I am not sure what I want totake up but I want to do some-thing different. Can you namesome unusual career profiles, which I can consider as myoptions?Yes, we’ll suggest ones that pay well

and seem like more of a hobby thanwork. If you like animals, you can consider

dog training or setting up a pet shelteror a pet-grooming business. However, proper techniques to run

the above businesses require trainingand practice. Successful entrepreneursinvest time and money to excel in thesefields. If you are not afraid of water then

you may consider scuba diving as acareer option. The various job opportu-nities as a scuba diver include workingat an aquarium, underwater photogra-phy, police diving, search and rescuediving, underwater welding, underwa-ter archaeology, marine biology, etc.

If you have a flair for imita-tion and have a radio-friendlyvoice, try becoming a voice-over artist. Voice acting, theart of providing voices for ani-mated characters (includingthose in feature films, televi-sion programs, animated shortfilms and video games) and radioand audio dramas and comedy, isa lucrative option too. You can alsodo voice-overs for radio and televi-sion commercials, audio dramas, dubbed foreign language films, videogames, puppet shows, and amusementrides. If you have a spiritual bent of mind,

try becoming an angel therapist. Angeltherapy is a non-denominational spiri-tual healing method that involvesworking with a person's guardianangels and archangels to heal and har-monise every aspect of his or her life.

You can alsotry to become ahypnotherapist. Ahypnotherapist often dif-fers from other therapistsbecause he or she focuses onthe role of subconsciousbehaviours and influences onthe client's life.

How do I decide whether acareer in management isappropriate for me or not?To decide whether a career in man-

agement is right for you, you have toweigh the pros and cons. You have todecide what’s best for you and notwhat matters to someone else. If thereturns, authority and value are impor-tant to you, you may want to considera career in management. However, if you don't like being legal-

ly or financially responsible for theactions of yours and others, manage-ment may be a bad choice. There willbe some things about managementthat appeal to you and others thatdon't. You have to weigh all these fac-tors and decide.

Managementis not foreveryoneIt can befrustrating and alot of hard work ifyou aren’t rightfor the job.

A step-by-step guide tostudying overseas

STUDY ABROAD

Select your country based on factors suchas the cost of living, employment oppor-tunities with regard to your programme ofchoice, racism, tuition fees, weather andeligibility to work part-time.

Select the programme you wish to studybased on your interest and past studies. Most universities offer a variety of sub-ject combinations for undergraduate stu-dents, so look up on the websites of uni-versities and check the subjects and mod-ules you will be studying.

After you have selected the course youwant to pursue, shortlist the universitiesthat are known for the course you want tostudy, and also note the documentsrequired for application.

To study abroad you will need to appearfor international entrance exams. Theseinclude the SAT if you want to go forundergraduate studies and GMAT or GREfor graduate studies. English languageexams such as IELTS and TOEFL will alsohave to be taken. Each country may havedifferent requirements.

You will be asked to submit a statementof purpose, recommendation letters, school and college transcripts, financialdocuments, mark sheets, test scores andcertificates.

Though these are the general require-ments, look up the website to see ifthere are any additional requirements bythe universities you choose to apply to.Make sure to get these ready well inadvance and send the application beforedeadline.

Before you depart, you need to convincethe visa authorities that you have enoughmoney in your bank to pay for yourexpenses in a foreign country. Make sureto get the financial documents, includingbank loans etc, in place before your visainterview.

You either receive a conditional or anunconditional offer letter. If conditional, you wait for a final offer letter by the uni-versity. After you get the offer letter, start preparing for accommodation, eitherin campus or off-campus.

Be prepared with your documentation(you can approach a student visa counsel-lor for help), and with your answers to the

most common questions asked at visainterviews. Don’t lie and don’t be nervous.

Through Facebook and other social net-working sites find out which studentsfrom India are going to the same universi-ty or even the same country as yours, andtry and meet them before you fly out.

After almost a year of preparation, youare ready for a life-changing educationalexperience!

Remember to carry copies of your pass-port in your hand luggage.

Also carry telephone numbers of all con-tacts, mobile phone, charger, enoughmoney and some spare clothes in yourbaggage.

Bon Voyage!

However, remember that col-leges get thousands of applicationforms during admission time andmay not have the time to gothrough each candidate’s co-cur-ricular certificates. Therefore, attach these certificates only ifthey have been asked for, or if youthink they are strong enough toconsolidate your application, such as national-level medals. In most cases, junior collegeadmissions do not require proofof extra-curricular activities. Incertain degree college pro-grammes, however, applicationpoints are allotted for strongco-curriculars. This will be

mentioned on the applicationform, in which case you mustattach attested copies. If you areapplying for a course that con-ducts a personal interview, makesure to carry your CV and certifi-cates and mention any exceptionaltalent you may possess.Keep in mind that you definitelyneed to attach proof of your co-curricular activities when apply-ing to universities abroad.Universities abroad are very spe-cific about what kind of proof theyrequire, so stick to those guide-lines and parameters.
