YEAR 7 2016 BYOD PROGRAM INFORMATION

In 2016 we will be building on the successful implementation of our Bring Your Own Device program. In 2016 all our Year 7, 8 and 9 students are required to bring an iPad as their core learning device.

This is an opportunity for students to have improved access to learning technologies and online learning. The program aims to improve student engagement in regular classes and provide enhanced teaching and learning practices for both students and teachers. These programs have been successfully implemented in Australia and overseas and the most dramatic improvements have taken place in environments where students have had their own mobile learning device such as the iPad.

What type of iPad will my child require? The minimum model we recommend is the iPad Air 32 GB wireless. Students can bring other iPads as long as they are an iPad 2 or later model and a full size iPad (i.e. no iPad minis) and we strongly recommend at least 32 GB of memory. We are expecting a new iPad model to be released later this year which will also be suitable in full size versions with 32GB and above. Students do not require versions with access to ‘mobile/cellular’ data.

Where can the iPad come from?Families can purchase iPads from any supplier they wish. We have established a partnership with an Apple supplier which will provide a parent portal for purchases at a lower cost (around $60 less in 2015) than current retail prices for our recommended model. They will also provide the recommended case. Details about the parent portal and final costs will be available from the BYOD tab on the school website by the end of August.

What other additional costs will there be?All iPads need to come to school with a good strong cover. We recommend the Otterbox Defender which will be available from our partner but also available from other suppliers. There is a $50 Network Access Charge payable to the school. This allows us to provide a variety of educational apps as well as Wi-Fi access for the school year. The costs of our traditional booklist have been cut significantly in order to make this more affordable.

What about insurance? We recommend that you discuss options with your home and contents insurer for insuring the iPad while not at home. If required we recommend you take out specific insurance for the iPad as there is no insurance coverage for the iPads at school under any Department of Education policies.

How can I learn more about this program?Families are encouraged to attend our Year 7 Preparation Evening on the 18th

of November, 2015 which will provide further information about the program. We also have a section of our school website dedicated to the BYOD program.

If students, parents or guardians have any further questions please feel free to either email or call Jack Marshall [email protected].

LANGUAGE OTHER THAN ENGLISH (LOTE) SELECTION

In 2016, all Year 7 students will study a foreign language.

The languages taught will be Japanese and German.

To help us with our planning, we would like you to indicate which language you would prefer to study by ticking the box next to the appropriate language.

The language will be studied in both Years 7 and 8. To ensure the viability of both languages at higher levels of the School, there will be five classes of Japanese and five of German.

While every effort will be made to give students their first choice, this may not always be possible.

MUSIC PROGRAMBallarat High School is pleased to offer Year 7 students a choice between two Music programmes - Classroom Music and Instrumental Music.

CLASSROOM MUSIC:These classes aim to give students an appreciation and understanding of music and are part of the curriculum for every student in Years 7 and 8. This subject is taught by the Classroom Music Staff. Classroom Music students use our fully set up Music prac room to explore, play and create music.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSICBand Classes:Band classes for beginning instrumental students provide the opportunity for students to play within a musical group. These classes are taken by all Year 7 students not doing Classroom Music and are conducted by Instrumental Music teachers. Students can continue studying their instruments through to Year 12 Music Performance.

Music Lessons:As well as taking part in Year 7 Band, students also receive specialised tuition on a weekly basis. This may be done individually or in a small group. Students are withdrawn from classes on a rotational basis so that students do not miss the same class each week.

Music Try-out Night:At the beginning of Term 1, Year 7 students and parents are invited to participate in the “Music Try-out Night”. All Woodwind and Brass instruments will be available to try at this event. This will help students and parents make informed choices after trying instruments and talking with staff. Students will be offered a place in the Instrumental Program, depending on the availability of instruments and vacancies. Students will be asked to make three choices of instruments they would like to play. From this and the try-out information, staff allocate instruments. Priority for instrument allocation will be given to students who attend the Music Try-out Night. If a student owns their own instrument offered by our program, they will be guaranteed a place.

School Bands/Ballarat Schools’ Symphony Orchestra:As students’ progress through the school, they will have the opportunity to play in various bands and ensembles.Whiz Bang Orkestra - Practice: Wednesday nights -

Band Practice:Students who learn an instrument will be required to play in a school ensemble when they reach a sufficient standard. This is a necessary part of their music tuition. This usually occurs in Year 8, although many Year 7 students join Intermediate Band after consultation with their teacher. Senior Concert Band, Junior Stage Band, BOB and Whizbang are pathways for students when they reach the required standard.Concerts:At various times throughout the year, the staff organise music concerts. These range from Year Level concerts to woodwind, brass and jazz nights. For example, the Year 7 Bands will perform at a Junior School Concert and other events, evenly throughout the year.

MUSIC COSTS1. Fees:

A Music levy of $100 is charged to each student who elects to participate in the Instrumental Music Program. This is used to offset the cost of buying music for lessons, bands and ensemble groups.Note: Once your child has been accepted into the program this charge is not refundable.

2. Instrumental Hire:Flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, alto and tenor saxophones, trumpets, horns, trombones, euphonium and tubas are available for hire at a cost of $160 per year. Students are required to purchase their own instrument after the first twelve months, if they play the flute, clarinet, trumpet or trombone. Other larger and/or more expensive instruments can be hired for longer periods, up to Year 12. Purchasing an instrument is always encouraged. Parents are advised to seek advice from staff before any purchase.

3. Insurance:While musical instruments are in care of families, the families are responsible for insurance. Parents should be aware that if a student loses or damages a School instrument, the family will be asked to contribute to the replacement/repair cost.

4. Music Stands:Students are encouraged to own their own folding music stand to use when practising at home.

5. Excursions:Performances are seen as an important part of the Music Program, both for the students and for the School. All music excursions are conducted under the same rules and regulations that apply to all school excursions.
