The Hilton Beach Farmers Market, now in its 3rd year at the Hilton Beach waterfront centre, is a little different this year but is still going strong with some changes this summer with plenty of safety pre- cautions in place. The market, open every Saturday until mid-August from 10am-noon, is now head up by Kris Stinnissen from Salamander Ridge Farm. Kris has been a staple at the farmers market since it moved down to the water in 2018, and Salamander Ridge also actively participates in the Algoma famers market in Sault Ste. Marie. Many during this pandemic have been relying on curb side pickups or deliveries for their foods but miss the actual shopping experience and this could be a good opportunity to get out and get fresh local products. Kris tells us they are missing a lot of people who became regulars in the past, but locals have been very supportive. While the lineup does change somewhat week to week, she tell us “right now the market vendors are me and Mike and Janise Garside from Garside Gardens, and Donna Morin, formerly of the Dry Dock Restaurant. We are supplying eggs, fresh seasonal produce, maple syrup, and Donna is baking up a storm with pies, cookies, butter tarts and bread.” Kris is also sewing some cloth masks available for a donation to the St. Joseph Twp Public Library. As this is an outdoor event, masks are not required, even now that Algoma Health has mandated them for indoor events, but she tells us some still do wear them and hand sanitizer is available for both the vendors and customers. While in the past much of the items were simply out on tables, now many of the products are now prepackaged to reduce han- dling. To ensure social distancing is practiced, they are required to have an empty table in front of the product table to lessen the temptation for customers to handle products. Kris mentions “Algoma Public Health has set out strict protocols that we are follow- ing for our safety, and for the safety of our customers.” Vendors and patrons are definitely going to be down this year, unfortunately no options for lunch like in the past and no musical performances, but the market still has a lot to offer. Kris closes by saying “We are making a positive out of a difficult situation, and are still enjoying being at the Market!” Visit us online at www.islandclippings.com Tel: 705-246-7678 email: [email protected] @ Island Clippings Hilton Beach Farmers Market Continues On.. The Hilton Beach Farmers Market, now in its 3rd year at the Hilton Beach waterfront centre, is a little different this year but is still going strong with some changes this summer with plenty of safety pre-cautions in place.

While in the past much of the items were simply out on tables, now many of

the products are now prepackaged to reduce han-dling. To ensure social distancing is practiced, they are required to have an empty table in front of the product table to lessen the temptation for customers to handle products. Kris mentions “Algoma Public Health has set out strict protocols that we are follow-ing for our safety, and for the safety of our customers.”

Vendors and patrons are definitely going to be down this year, unfortunately no options for lunch like in the past and no musical performances, but the market still has a lot to offer. Kris closes by saying “We are making a positive out of a difficult situation, and are still enjoying being at the Market!”

Face Coverings Mandated Indoors in Algoma Starting Friday

By now most people have heard this, however we cer-tainly recognize not everyone is following the news as closely these days. While many have already taken to wearing masks they are now required indoors every-where in Algoma. If you have not gotten any yet there are plenty of places on the island you can pick some up. They are also for sale at Island Market, available through the Legion, even at the Hilton Beach Farmers Market they are available for a donation to a donation to the St. Joseph Twp Public Library and we have also seen them on the bulletin board at the Richards Landing post office, among other places. The com-munity quilters provided us with these way back when the pandemic started. Below is Algoma Public Heath’s press release:

As of Friday July 17, 2020, the public will be required to wear a face covering (i.e. non-medi-cal mask) when entering the indoor premises of businesses, organizations and on public transit systems throughout the service area of Algoma Public Health (APH).

This will be achieved through public health instructions, which are being issued today to all persons responsible for a business or orga-nization that is open. Businesses and organiza-tions must adopt a policy that requires people to wear a mask or face covering in all enclosed public spaces. A sample policy has been provid-ed.APH’s Medical Officer of Health is issuing these instructions under the authority of the provin-cial Emergency Management and Civil Protec-tion Act (EMCPA) as part of ongoing efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“As the province continues to reopen, and as we continue to maintain corridors of essential trav-el between Algoma and other regions including southern Ontario and the US, we need to step up preventive measures in our public spaces, to keep workers and customers safe, and help business reopen safely, and stayopen,” said Dr. Marlene Spruyt, Medical Off cer of Health.

APH is committed to supporting local business-es and organizations. Published are a series of Frequently Asked Questions about the new requirements to go along with a Sector-Specific Guidance page where businesses/organizations can download and print signage to assist them in reopening safely.

Creature Feature

Deborah Aaron a new island resident sent us this photo of a ring-necked snake. While we have featured this creature before, their not a very common sight. She mentions how fast it was moving and how diffi-cult it was to get a photo Indeed we haven’t seen once since our first summer here.

These tiny snakes - not to be confused with with the more common and larger garter snakes, are noctur-nal. While they can reach 70cm, 30-40centimterrs is their common full grown size.

Their primary diet is salamanders, which are abun-dant around these parts. We have only seen the one ring-necked snake since moving here, opposed to the 0 salamanders we have seen. They also eat other amphibians and small insects.

While they are not classified as venomous, their bite is apparently “mildly toxic”. That should not be much of a concern, as they are quite skittish. Regardless, we don’t recommend picking them up if you see them, but if our recommendation isn’t enough, know that ring-necked snakes do not bite when caught but will release a foul-smelling feces and musk from anal glands.

PROPOSED ZONING BY-LAW AMENDMENTTAKE NOTICE that the Corporation of the Township of Hilton intends to amend the Township’s Zoning By-law to implement provisions applying to the location, placement and use of shipping containers within the boundaries of the Township of Hilton.

The proposed zoning by-law amendment would define and permit Shipping Containers and establish requirements for the location and for the placement of a Shipping Container on any property within the Rural (RU), Highway Commercial (HC), Business Park (BP), Major Recreation (MR), Rural Industrial (MI), Extractive Industrial (MX) and Waste Disposal (WD) Zones, including minimum setbacks and permitted uses.

If a person or public body would otherwise have an ability to appeal the decision of the Township of Hilton to the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal but the person or public body does not make oral submissions at a public meeting or make written submissions to the Township of Hilton Council before the by-law is passed, the person or public body is not entitled to appeal the decision.

If a person or public body does not make oral submissions at a public meeting, or make written submissions to the Township of Hilton before the by-law is passed, the person or public body may not be added as a party to the hearing of an appeal before the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal unless, in the opinion of the Tribunal, there are reasonable grounds to do so.

For more information relating to the proposed amendment, including information about appeal rights, contact Valerie Obarymskyj, Clerk Treasurer at the Township of Hilton, 2983 Base Line, Hilton Beach, Ontario, P0R 1G0, or to [email protected] between the hours of 9:00 am and 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday or by phoning 705-246-2472.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Due to the restrictions placed on community activities across Canada and around the world, the NSHN Auxiliary Matthews Site has decided that this year’s Community Night must be cancelled. We realize that this is an event that many of the residents of St. Joseph Island and the North Shore look forward to each summer but we feel that the safety of those communities is of utmost importance. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year. In the mean-time, if you would like to help out by donating to the Auxiliary to make up for this loss of revenue and help support our local hospital, you can send a cheque payable to NSHN Aux-iliary Matthews Site at NSHN Auxiliary, Matthews Site, Box 75, Richards Landing, Ontario, P0R 1J0 or etransfer to [email protected]. Please go to the NSHN Auxil-iary Matthews Site on Face-book for more information.

This year’s draw for the hand-made quilt, the bicycle or the gift certificate from Timberm-art in support of the NSHN Richards Landing Auxiliary Matthews Site will take place at Matthews Hospital on July 31st at 9:00 P.M.
