Keeping our Students Safe in the Kiss and Ride Many elementary schools offer a Kiss and Ride program, where parents/guardians can drop off and pick up their children at a designated area on school property. The program was established to provide a convenient and safe option for our students and parents driving to school. To ensure the safety of staff and students, we ask all parents/guardians be mindful of the following guidelines:

• There is no parking and no waiting in the Kiss and Ride lane. Pay attention to the traffic in front of you and pull forward as cars move forward. If you choose to park in the parking lot, please escort your child to or from the nearest foot patroller and use the main crosswalk.

• Vehicles entering the Kiss and Ride lane must stay in the designated lane, unless otherwise directed by a staff member or volunteer.

• The Kiss N’ Ride program is only available to students who are able to disembark independently.

• Have your child ready to exit the car when you reach the curb. Students may only exit from the passenger (right) side of the vehicle.

• After picking up or dropping off your child, leave promptly so that others can get in behind you.

• If your child is not waiting for you at the main crosswalk at the end of the day, please circle the parking lot if permitted and rejoin the line or park in a designated parking space to wait.

• Always respect traffic flow and abide all traffic laws and signs.

What’s New with our Kiss and Ride for this School Year

This year, we will have student volunteers who will support us in the Kiss and Ride by walking our kindergarten students from the Kiss and Ride to the Kindergarten area. Our “Kindergarten Walkers” have been chosen for their leadership, responsibility and demonstrated care for our younger students. They will ensure the kindergarten students are met with a teacher once in the kindergarten area. For those families wishing to walk their own children from the car to the K area, we ask that you not use our Kiss and Ride as it is strictly for those students who can disembark independently.

The drop off zone located at the front of the school is for school buses only. From 8:25am - 8:40am and from 3:00pm-3:15pm, this area is a “no car zone”.

Immunize your Grade 7 Children for Better Health with the HPV-9 Vaccine

On August 17th, 2017, the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care announced that HPV-9 vaccine will replace the HPV-4 vaccine for grade 7 students starting on September 5th, 2017.    You may recall completing an immunization consent form for your child to receive Hepatitis B, Meningococcal ACYW-135 and HPV-4 vaccines in the spring.  Since HPV-4 vaccine will no longer be offered, we require your consent to immunize your child for HPV-9.  If you have already spoken to a Peel Public Health Nurse and provided verbal consent for HPV-9, please disregard the consent form that will be sent home at the beginning of the year.

The HPV-9 vaccine provides protection against nine strains of HPV. A fact sheet with more information on the HPV disease will also be provided to each student for parents. Please review the fact sheet with your child and return the signed consent form to the school. Completed consents will be given to Peel Public Health Nurses who will give the vaccines at clinics held in your child’s school this school year.   If you have questions, you can find more information on our website at www.immunizepeel.ca or you can talk to a Peel Public Health Nurse at 905-799-7700.

Health & Physical Education at HPS 2017-2018 Students are expected to get involved in the Health & Physical Education program. It is as important as all other subjects when you are working toward a better self!! Healthy active living is crucial to achieving your personal best in all aspects of student life.

We encourage all students to have proper non-marking athletic shoes to maximize participation in our program. Students in grade 5 to 8 are expected to change for every class and a handout will be sent home during the first week of school. Please return the tear-off portion after discussing the expectations with your child.

All students will have the opportunity to purchase a school T-shirt and gym bag this year. Please see below for more information.

School teams and intramurals will start up early in September. We will be looking for volunteer students to help run intramural activities this year. This will be a great leadership opportunity for those interested. Students are asked to pay attention to announcements regarding information about both opportunities.

The Health curriculum will be covered throughout the school year focusing on Healthy Eating, Personal Safety & Injury Prevention, Substance Abuse. The Human Development Unit will be taught in the Spring and a letter will be sent home to all families two weeks before this unit begins.

For more information or if you have questions, please contact Mr. Stanley and Ms. Borrell.
