denfrei at (561) 582-3340 ([email protected]) or by

or locations.

very well. I'll let Larry go into details in his col-

umn. There was enough wind!

The Memorial Day Cruise, this year to Bimini,

concludes the month of May. No fun will be had

there I'm sure. June continues with the Spring

Series, the Beer Cans and Coastal Race #2, the

Bill Nederlanden Coastal on the 7th.

Now, finishing this article gets hard and person-

al. As you know by now, Bill Nederlanden, our

first H.I.S.C. Commodore, passed away on the

12th of May. Those of you who knew Bill know

that he truly was one of the good guys. For those

of you who never had that opportunity, you

missed someone special. Personally I've known

Bill and Betty since the late seventies. I had the

privilege to crew for them on Ariel back then. I

was new to big boat sailing, so they had to teach

me a lot, not only about racing but sailing in gen-

eral. Bill also taught me about rum. Particularly

rum and bitter lemon. He will be missed.

So that leads up to Coastal Race 2. This is not a

memorial race. It is now named as an honor to

our Founding Commodore. There will be a per-

petual trophy. I hope many of you will be there

for the inaugural even if you don't race. There

will be a recognition ceremony at the after race

party at the Bahia Mar Marina. Rum and bitter

lemon will be available.

Never forget that there is a lot of history to this

family.

Always have fun.

Do not fall down.

Their sponsors are Eugene Sullivan and Michael

Duvall. The Board member who did the inter-

view was Rear Commodore Larry Geller.

Mary Fran Reed has joined the HISC. She is

the owner of Justice, a Carter Offshore 50. Sad

to report that the boat was stolen, recovered, and

is now involved in a legal battle. This craft

sports an unusual “Luna Rig” having two masts

of equal height from which you fly a jib forward

and a staysail amidships. She is studying for her

Captain’s license. Her sailing resume begins

years ago while she was a college student. Mary

Fran has sailed out of ports around the world and

made many ocean passages.

Her sponsors are Hector Arrillaga and Bill Sho-

mo. The Board member who did the interview

was One Year Director Robert Schuldenfrei.

Scott & Heather DiSalvo are good friends of

club members Kendall Marcelle and Mike Lyon.

After hearing about all of the good times HISC

members enjoy, Scott and Heather decided to

take the plunge. They bring to the fleet Simpati-

co, an Island Packet 370. Scott has been sailing

since he was a teenager. He met Heather while

crewing during the Hospice Regatta in 1999.

They put into ports of call almost every year in

the Bahamas.

Their sponsors are Mike Lyon and Kendall Mar-

celle. The Board member who did the interview

was One Year Director Robert Schuldenfrei.

Manny Negreiro of Lighthouse Point has

joined the HISC. He is fairly new to sailing, but

has a good command of the basics. Manny has

chartered a Lagoon 42 in the British Virgin Is-

lands and wants to take his sailing skills to the

next level. The next target is learning naviga-

tion.

His sponsors are Michael Peteler and Bob Di-

Gennaro. The Board member who did the inter-

view was One Year Director Robert Schulden-

frei.

Bruce Guttler currently has a 17’ Sea Ray,

however, he is interested in moving to sail.

Bruce grew up in Philadelphia, and at age 15

started sailing Sunfish. He then moved up to a

Hobie 18 at the Jersey Shore and then raced 4-

20's for American University. He is currently

looking to buy a cruising sailboat.

His sponsors are Brenda Duvall and Frank Tip-

pett. The Board member who did the interview

was One Year Director Robert Schuldenfrei.

Eric & Katariina Chirinsky of Deerfield

Beach have joined HISC. Eric, a Florida native,

and Katariina, originally from Finland, recently

purchased Iriemystic a Lagoon 420. New to sail-

ing, they are interested in cruising with the club

and learning more about sailing. They have two

young children Cameron and Audrey ages 4 and

2. They hope to one day in the near future take

a sabbatical and sail their boat down to the Car-

ibbean. For now they enjoy sailing on their boat

every week locally.

HISC Blood

Drive - A Huge

Success

By Betty Coviello

The HISC Blood Drive for 2014 was a smashing

success. This is very important since HISC will

be running only one blood drive per year from

now on.

HISC members, their friends, family and neigh-

bors of the host, Larry Geller, donated a whop-

ping 48 pints. Two members who could not at-

tend donated earlier. While One Blood does not

credit us with the two additional pints we claim

them in in the numbers we publish.

Forty eight pints of whole blood becomes 240

units of life-saving benefit when separated into

its 5 components. To put this into perspective, a

One Blood bloodmobile will spend an entire day

at a shopping mall parking lot and collect less

than 10 pints. In fact, HISC is the largest non-

corporate donor group One Blood has, according

to a report we received from them.

Of course, a big part of the success, in addition

to the community minded attitudes of our mem-

bers, is the beautiful home Larry Geller made

available to us for the drive. It was a perfect

evening and a perfect setting. The good food and

drink helped as well.

If you are able but haven’t donated before keep

this event in mind for next year. If you can’t do-

nate come for the party.

Racing

By Larry Geller

Third Tri

It has been a busy month for the racing fleet,

with two distance races, two buoy races and the

start of our summer beer can series.

On April 26, a group of HISC boats traveled to

Miami for the Miami to Key Largo race. With

40 miles of flat water and a huge fleet, this race

is one of the highlights of the year for many

crews. The race was a light air battle, and even

the fastest boats took over 8 hours to finish.

HISC cleaned up, with Magic, Sempre Amantes,

Unicorn and Third Tri winning their respective

fleets. Go HISC!

The following weekend was our annual Hillsbo-

ro Inlet to Palm Beach Race. This event, held in

conjunction with the Castaways Sailing Club

and the Palm Beach Sailing Club kicks off on

Friday night with a great pre-race party/skippers

meeting at the Voss’s home. It was great to

meet the crews from the other clubs and enjoy a

drink while watching the out of town fleet raft

up behind the Voss’s home.

The race started on Saturday morning, with a

total of 25 boats split into 4 different fleets. The

day started with a nice gentle south westerly

breeze that saw many spinnakers flying and

boats headed far offshore in order to get as much

help as they could from the current. The early

afternoon was truly the “calm before the storm”,

with the wind going to almost zero for over an

hour before BAM – it switched around to the

Northeast at 25+!

Although a few boats dropped out during the

calm, most of the fleet finished before the 6:00

deadline, and made it to the Old Port Cove in

time to get cleaned up and have a drink before

dinner. Results for this and our other races are

available on the club website and on pages 9 and

10 (he PBR results and Spring Series Races #3

and #4) in this issue of the Inlet/Outlet.

This was my first visit to the Old Port Cove Ma-

rina and wow, was I impressed. The dinner/

awards party was a big hit, with over 100 people

sharing stories of the day while enjoying cock-

tails, dinner and dessert in the Sandpiper Restau-

rant. THANK YOU to the many volunteers who

worked so hard to make this fun for all.

Another highlight of the month was seeing some

new boats/club members join us on the water,

including Shoal Mate and Short Sail with club

veterans including Carl Wehe and Michael and

Peggy Peteler joining them as crew.

Remember that we now have a trophy for the

Best New Boat, so please contact me if you are

looking to join us on the racecourse!

See you on the water.

Racing Chair, Larry Geller, shows the way on Third Tri

Beer Can Rac-

ing 2014

By Jamie Cowan

The 2014 Wednesday night Beer Can series is

now underway. Race #1 came off pretty well

considering the blustery breeze serving to give

Meantime a “rollercoaster” ride at anchor, and

causing an intermediate shroud to part on Sheer

Bliss! Finally, after the raft-up had been in place

for maybe five minutes (?) we started dragging

anchor and had to break off for the night and

head home without even being able to distribute

the prizes to Magic and Third Tri.

The second race was postponed due to threaten-

ing weather as bad (or worse) than the first race.

So the next race we will try to catch up with the

earlier winners as well as to unload the current

prizes as well.

You know, we all appreciate Susimi X and Third

Tri taking care of the mark setting and retrieval,

and many thanks to Commodore Frank Tippett,

for his successful fund raising. And also thank

you to our resident artist, Pat Anderson, for our

always super Beer Can T-shirts. Thanks to

Maureen & Tim Leonard for being hosts (and

worthy participants) for the race committee. And

special thanks to Cindy Goodrich-Cowan for all

her work to bring the beer, do the results, and

dole out the prizes.

Come out and join the action, get in a little prac-

tice, and have fun to boot!

See you on the water!
