Do you have ideas to help improve our community? Come and tell us at the
Wootton Room at Herne Mill on first Saturday of the month
from 10am - 12 noon.
Garden Safari thank you BBQ - Sunday 8 Sept 2013 Almost 40 people attend the BBQ organised by our Parish Council, to thank the
residents who opened their gardens in the Safari held in June. Council chairman,
Tony Day, thanked everyone before presenting a cheque for £778 to Elizabeth O'
Hanlon from Macmillan Cancer Care. Elizabeth spoke about the work of the charity
and thanked everyone for their magnificent efforts. The event was kindly hosted by
Cllr Andy Harvey and his wife Sabine at their home in Margate Road.
Golf Course - 200 more houses now planned
Quinn Estates have changed their plans now that Tesco are not going to be part of the proposed Golf Course development. Consultations were held in Herne and Herne Bay. 600 houses are now planned in place of the initial 400 stated. There is also talk of Barton Court Grammar School re-locating to the site.
Working for and with you Our Parish Councillors have been working for you, not only responding to the Local Plan and various other strategic consultations, they have also been raising money for charity and for community projects in our Parish, adding value to the precept.
Cllr Carol Davis & Jennifer Taylor attended and had input into the District Open Spaces Strategy meeting. Andy Harvey hosted the thank you BBQ for the Safari gardeners and has been helping to get the new allotments in Ford Road off the ground. Cllrs Andrew Brealy, Carol Davis, Tony Day, Ann Blatherwick, Andy Harvey, Pam Hobbs, Tracey & Robert Jones, John Nicholson, Ian Sargent, Jennifer
Taylor and Chris Tobin, all helped at the Fun Day. Cllrs Brealy, Davis, Blatherwick, Harvey, Hobbs, Sargent and Taylor helped at the Community Centre public consultations. Cllr Ann Blatherwick has done a lot of work on the Local Plan. Cllr Robert Jones has done some footpath clearance, now that KCC have cut back on this work. Cllr Jennifer Taylor covered the office post and messages when the clerk was away Cllr Davis produces the newsletter. All of the councillors, with the aid of other volunteers deliver the newsletters to every home in the parish. Cllr Tony Day holds a meet and greet session for residents every month.
Thank you to everyone that supported our Fun Day with donations or prizes including KCC Cllr Alan Marsh, Wilbee & Son, Herne Bay Town Partners, Di Stark, WAHL, Broomfield Pharmacy, Broomfield Post Office, Broomfield Fish & Chip Shop, Mortimers Restaurant, The Pantry, Salon 88, Huntsman & Horn, Grinning Pig and Herne Village Groomers plus all our wonderful volunteers without whom we would not have raised £1829.60, which will be shared with Strode Park.

Epps Construction and Judge Architects Ltd won your vote for the design of the new Community Centre in Herne. Three consultation events were held in the Herne Community Hall, Broomfield Church Hall and at the Wootton Room, Herne Mill, plus one for the parish councillors. Epps and Judge were clear winners in the
public vote and discussions are on-going to take into account your comments. The next step is for the plans to be finalised and to arrange discussions with planners before the planning application goes in.
Our Parish Council would like to hear from local trades who would like to be considered for the build, phone 01227 742700.
The consultation days were advertised in our newsletters, which are delivered to every home in the parish, posters were displayed in the notice boards and there were press releases in local press and the PC website. The contractors were all invited to attend all three public sessions. Residents were asked to put the five designs in order of preference with 1 being the design they liked best and 5 the one they liked least. Older children from the Junior school also came to make their choice. 190 people took part all together, the majority living in Herne and most were over 40.
New Community Centre Activities—have your say Our new community centre, with its extra flexible space, will give us fresh opportunities for more activities to take place. The centre will consist of a main hall, a small hall and a smaller room.
Would any of the following activities interest you: Tea dances/ Line dancing Bingo sessions Luncheon club Adult education Police information point Welfare rights and debt advice sessions Library corner Youth activities Children’s birthday parties Wi-fi hub Computer sessions for beginners Well being & healthy living activities

Testimonial Dear Wayne, I would like to thank you for helping me when I recently saw you due to pelvis pain and discomfort during my pregnancy. As you will remember I could hardly walk to get into your room for the appointment. However, you worked wonders and I walked out with no pain whatsoever and thankfully in a normal fashion!! What you don’t know is that I had some shopping to do that afternoon and spent a couple of hours in town with no problems or pain at all and even spent the following evening dancing at a friend’s wedding! I couldn’t believe the huge difference you made in such a short space of time, thank you so much!!
Best Wishes Annabel

Friends of St Martin’s Church (Herne) ORGAN RECITAL BY DAVID FLOOD ORGANIST AND MASTER OF CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL CHORISTERS.
SATURDAY 30 NOVEMBER, 7.30pm at ST MARTIN’S Tickets on the door £6.00; to include soft refreshments
HERNE & BROOMFIELD LOCAL HISTORY GROUP David Woods began our new season of meetings in September with his talk on, Family History Refreshed. David, Chairman of the Canterbury Branch of the Kent Family History Society, looked at sources for Family History research including; Births, Marriages and Death records; Census Returns - produced every ten years - those currently available being from 1841 to 1911; Passenger Lists, and Military records - all sources which can now be found online. He also referred to the historical importance of newspapers which contain obituaries and stories of specials events in which our ancestors might have been involved. David’s talk concluded with an interesting question and answer session.
At our Annual General Meeting in October, Group Chairman Alan Dilnot’s Annual report highlighted some of the events of the past year including; the installation of a plaque near Herne Infants School in School Lane commemorating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012, which also re-commemorated Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897. A new book Coronations and Coronets had been produced and launched at the King’s Hall centenary celebrations in July. In August we had a stall which proved popular at Herne & Broomfield’s Parish Fun Day at Cherry Orchard. Also in August we decorated beach Hut no 136 with crowns and coronets (courtesy of People United) as a “Royal Retreat” and installed our ‘Royal Events’ display inside to promote our new book Coronations and Coronets. Our highlight in September was our 10th Birthday, which celebrated
with champagne and a specially made cake. Commemorative badges were given to members. A display had been installed in the King’s Hall as part of September Heritage week-end. Our AGM concluded with a well illustrated talk by Tony Harris on his experiences as a ‘Film Star’ in the making of the film Dunkirk in 2004.
At our November meeting Dick Bolton gave a talk on Oasts and Archangels - the history of Wickhambreaux village.
Tuesday December 3rd 7.30 pm is our Christmas social meeting; with Christmas Memories – a musical entertainment by the Beltinge Ladies Choir accompanied by some Group members Christmas memories.
The first meeting of the new year will be on Tuesday, February 4th when Dr Nikki Gammans will give an illustrated talk entitled; The Return of the Native – the re-introduction of the shorthaired Bumblebee to Kent. Our meetings are held at 7.30 pm the Institute Hall, Canterbury Road, Herne. New members and visitors (£2) always welcome. For more information contact our Chairman on 01227 373695.
Our new book, Coronations and Coronets A4, 56 pages,
original pictures, some in colour – a celebration of royal
events in the area from 1887 to present day, is available
at £8.50 (P&P £1.20), from above number. An ideal
Christmas present.

A spade can be used to burgle your home A small number of burglaries have occurred in coastal areas where offenders have used the victims' garden implements to effect entry. In particular garden spades have been used to force open windows or doors. Residents are urged to ensure that their gardening equipment is safely locked away so that it can't be used in this way.
Police also advise to buying a shed alarm. Basic shed alarms are relatively inexpensive to buy, they sound surprisingly loud when they are activated at night time and they are usually enough to deter all but the most brazen of would-be thieves.
Herne Mill Would you like to help us
preserve this historic building? Can you spare an hour, or maybe a
few hours? We need ..
gardeners, cleaners, painters, DIYers, engineers ...
people who could share our passion for looking after Herne's landmark building
No experience is needed as we can give full training. We hold regular work parties at the Mill
on Wednesday mornings from 10 am - 12 noon and occasional Sunday afternoons
(alternative days could be arranged if more suitable)

Bats in the Park The Bat Watch evening held at Curtis Wood Park on 29th August, was a great success with 17 adults and 11 children taking part. We saw, heard on bat detectors and identified two species of bat; the Common pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrellus) and the Soprano pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pygmaeus). The weather was perfect with no wind and plenty of moths and mosquitoes.
John Puckett, Chairman of Kent Bat Group, bought along two rescued Pipistrells and a Serotine bat for everyone to see close up and feel purring. John explained the life cycle of bats and the difficult time they have had this year because of the weather. The event was organised by Friends of Broomfield & Herne Ponds. The group help to look after the pond and new volunteers are always welcome to come along, phone 01227 372519.
Green Flag Award Curtis Wood Park has again received a Green Flag Award this year, which
officially recognises the site as one of the best green spaces in the country! The Green Flag Award® scheme is the benchmark national standard for parks and green spaces in the UK; to achieve Green Flag status, a site has to successfully meet a range of key criteria which includes the need to be a welcoming place, to be clean and well maintained, be managed sustainably and to demonstrate community involvement. Over the last few years the City Council along
with our Parish Council and the Friends of Broomfield and Herne Ponds have worked hard to improve the site which now provides visitors with the opportunity to enjoy a variety of semi-natural habitats in a relaxed and pleasant setting that also acts as a valuable sanctuary for wildlife. Recent improvements include new interpretation panels, better access, new benches made from green oak (sourced locally from The Blean) and a more sympathetic mowing regime for wildlife. ‘Welly walk’ cards and a full colour leaflet have been produced to inform visitors. Effective partnership working with the Kent Police, Kent Fire and Rescue Service and our local community has also proved very effective in dramatically reducing anti-social behaviour within the site. Successful Wildart Day in August About 30 adults, and 50 children turned up to the Wildart and Nature Day organised by the City Council at Curtis Wood Park. Feedback they received was really positive.

Our awards keep coming …We announced in the last newsletter that we took first place this year in Herne Bay in Bloom for our nursery garden, second place for environmental project (Forest School) and Silver gilt from South/South Eastern Schools in Bloom for our nursery garden and environmental project (Forest School) in addition to these wonderful achievements we now have gold for Kent Wildlife Trust– we are extremely proud of these results and would like to thank everyone involved in making this happen!
Our children are now settling in well to this first term and our Forest School sessions are still very popular. If any community groups would like to access the woodlands in Cherry Orchard for adult led activities please contact us for more information.
We have had our regular school photographer in to take school photos of the children and these always prove very popular with our families and make wonderful Christmas presents.
Recently we celebrated Harvest Festival and enjoyed a service at Herne Church where we donated food to the church which Elaine (the vicar) is passing onto ‘Catching Lives’ a local charity for the homeless, we would like to personally thank all the families that donated tins and packets – we are so very grateful for all your support.
Finally, on a very sad note, we have had to endure yet another break in – this time our office window was smashed and the thieves removed our laptop and caused damage to the window and office. We would like to thank Guard It Patrols who attended the break in promptly but sadly the thieves had already left.
We would be grateful for any information regarding the break in which happened at midnight on 16th October please contact either the police on 101 or the nursery direct. Michelle Jones, Manager

Strode Park Foundation Hydrotherapy Centre Appeal
Help us to provide local children and adults with disabilities with the opportunity to experience the benefits that water based exercise can bring. We have launched an appeal to raise £220,000 to build a Hydrotherapy Centre at Strode Park House. The Centre will have a state of the art Swimming Pool with under water current, treadmill, and Jacuzzi. There will also be a therapy room and electronic hoist system to aid with access in and out of the pool.
This form of exercise has tremendous therapeutic qualities especially for those who are not able to take park in land based exercise but we can only achieve our goal with your help.
Please contact Tracy & Michelle at the Strode Park Fundraising office if you would like to get involved with raising funds for this wonderful project which really will help to improve the lives of those we care for.

Foreign invader seen in Broomfield Japanese Knotweed has been seen in gardens in
Broomfield. This attractive pernicious plant can take over gardens and costs land owners millions of pounds each year to control. Japanese knotweed was introduced into Britain in the 19th century as an ornamental plant. Over time it has become widespread in a range of habitats, including roadsides, riverbanks and derelict buildings. It outcompetes native plants and animals.
Japanese knotweed is lush green in colour, has shovel shaped leaves and a stem that's bamboo like in appearance. It produces white flowers around September or October and can grow by 10cm a day. Japanese knotweed spreads through its crown, rhizome (underground stem) and stem segments, rather than its seeds. The weed can grow a metre in a month and can cause heave below concrete and tarmac, coming up through the resulting cracks and damaging buildings and roads. Studies have shown that a 1cm section of rhizome can produce a new plant in 10 days. Rhizome
segments can remain dormant in soil for twenty years before producing new plants.
If you have Japanese knotweed on your land you may be causing a private nuisance to surrounding properties. Using Environment Agency guidance you should control the Japanese knotweed to prevent further spreading. If Japanese knotweed on a neighbouring property is causing a nuisance to you, the EA recommend that you co-operate with the landowner and seek to control the problem amicably, rather than resort to legal action. This is an issue under Common Law and the Environment Agency has no powers in this situation. Burn every part of the plant to prevent spreading.
The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 states that it is an offence to "plant or otherwise cause to grow in the wild" any plant listed in Schedule nine, Part II of the Act. This lists over 30 plants including Japanese knotweed, giant hogweed and parrot's feather. The police are responsible for investigating this offence and each police force has a wildlife liaison officer.
Herne Junior School It has all been happening at Herne CE Junior School since our return after a glorious summer. We have had four new
members of staff, three teachers and a teaching assistant, start with us. I am pleased to inform you that all have settled well and each brings an added little spice to the team!
Last summer our school recorded the best set of SATs results for a number of years. These results have placed us very favourably when you compare us with other local schools. We hope this will become the norm at Herne Juniors for many years to come.
This term has also seen a slight change with the school governors. Mr Douglas Kiely recently stepped down as Chair of Governors after almost four years. Doug has
steered the school through some choppy waters in the past couple of years and we are immensely grateful to him for all of his hard work. He hasn't disappeared from the governing body completely, far from it, Doug has kindly agreed to support our new Chair, Mr Dorrell Furness, as Vice-Chair. I am looking forward to working with both over the next few years.
Sport has always played an important role at Herne and in addition to the many after-school activities on offer, we are competing successfully against other local schools in football and netball. To date our football teams are enjoying a mixed bag of fortune and currently occupy a mid-table position. We hope that over the coming weeks they will all do enough to sustain their recent good run of form.
All our children are being taught how to stay safe online through the teaching of e-safety lessons. Mr Taylor led e-safety training for all staff at the beginning of term. To date the children have had lessons on what information to put on the internet because, as we should all know, once it's on the net it stays on the net! Mr Taylor has also introduced new iPads to the
school. The children are having lots of fun using them to support their learning in a variety of subjects. The iPads are an incredible tool if used correctly and some of the Apps being used are extremely engaging and are having a marked result in motivating some of our boys!
Our summer fete raised over £1000, which we used to purchase new reading books. In fact, we actually spent almost £9000 on new books. These have proved very successful with some children racing through the books. We will have to invest in some more before too long! Mrs Espley put out a plea for reading volunteers before the
summer. We call them the 'Reading Army'. These lovely people come in each week and help us ensure that every child is listened to read. I would like to thank them for their kindness and commitment.
Our main school focus this academic year is to improve the quality of the children's writing.
All our children will experience writing in the style of a whole plethora of different genres but, most importantly, will focus on getting the basics right. To help us do this all children are having dedicated grammar lessons each week.
Parts of the school buildings are almost 150 years old and some of it look it! During the summer months we had a number of repairs completed, including the brickwork on the outside of Year 4 and the potholes filled in on the school drive. We have also had a new staffroom and school library built. We were very pleased to get planning permission to replace the broken fence around the school field, which we hope to have in place before too long. This will support us in keeping our children safe and save us spending valuable lesson time clearing up dog poop!
Lastly, the end of this term sees Miss Foreman start her maternity leave. We all wish her and her new baby all the best and look forward to seeing them both in the not too distant future. Mal Saunders, Headteacher

SANTA NEEDS YOU!
We really need the support of our community to help Santa this year. To avoid people waiting outside for a long time in the cold and dark, we are seeking volunteers to act as Santa’s helpers. Can you please email your mobile number and address to the parish office and Santa or his elves will keep you updated on his journey round Herne on 15th December and Broomfield on 22nd December. We will treat your details in the strictest confidence and we will delete them from our systems after Santa’s Journey.
Do you have a bike in your shed or garage that you are unlikely to need any more? Bikes of all kinds are needed for novices to ride on the flat Canterbury to Chartham cycle route. This will encourage more people to cycle, phone Beatrice on 01227 766782.

Herne Horticultural and Rose Society
2013 has been another successful year for the society with our 50th member being signed up, which is very gratifying and clocks up a milestone that we have been trying to achieve for a couple of years.
Our meetings have been well attended and covered a wide range of subjects.
Shows The Spring Show in March reflected the very late spring weather which delayed the normal season by at least two weeks and meant that daffodil entries were down. However the Cookery, Handicraft and Floral Arrangement classes made up for this. The Summer Show in June was again a little short of roses due to the weather and Elizabeth, our President was unwell and unable to exhibit her usual entries so we were a little down but we gained a couple of new members from visitors and made a small profit overall. The Autumn Show in September was affected by the long hot dry spell which we had in July and August. This meant that many of the later garden flowers were sparse and we had no Top Tray vegetable entries but we again had an increased number of cookery entries and the floral classes, which gave us a good show.
Social and Fund Raising Events The first event of the year was our Christmas Party held in late November. This time we gave members a choice of “bring and share” food or fish and chips and this worked out about 50/50. The addition of a couple of quizzes and silly games made for a great enjoyable evening. The Beetle Drive in May was again very successful and encouraged one or two members who had not played this quirky game before to come and enjoy themselves with the rest of us seasoned players. Despite the really very cold windy June day (hats and gloves were worn by most of us) we again had a very successful plant sale at the mill on the Parish Council's Garden Safari and we able to give them a £20 donation
for their chosen charities. The Kentish Tea in August kindly hosted by Elizabeth Hopkins, our President, in her lovely garden was held in beautifully warm summer sunshine. Members enjoyed her delicious homemade scones and the garden and we are very grateful for her generous support which as well as giving personal enjoyment contributes financially to the society.
Garden Visits Due to popular demand we have had two garden visits this year. The first one in late April was to Highlands, St Stephens, Canterbury when Dr Terry Grayson gave us a tour of his garden which nestles on the side of the hill overlooking the city. He has been there since the mid 1970's and has created a beautiful landscaped area with island beds and mature trees many of which he has grown from seed. It was interesting to see this garden in Spring, although as Terry said, things were at least two weeks late because of the previous very inclement weather. He concluded his tour with an informative question and answer session for members and provided refreshments on the terrace for everyone. Our donations enabled him to send £101 to the Pilgrim's Hospice. I believe some members went back to visit the garden again in July when he opened it under the NGS Yellow Book garden scheme because they were so impressed with it. The second visit was in June – this time a glorious sunny day – when we went to the Whitstable Castle gardens and were given a comprehensive tour by Head Gardener Dan Pretlove. His enthusiasm and detailed horticultural knowledge made for a very enjoyable afternoon. In addition we had a tour of the interior of the castle giving the background to its history and recent renovations. This was rounded off by a delicious cream tea in one of the castle's reception rooms which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.
