Hikes NearDenver

Corey Engelen

part 2

I love living in Denver for anumber of reasons. But oneof my favorite things aboutliving here is the unparalleledaccess to the outdoors.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again:if you enjoy hiking, then Denveris the place for you.

The LochRocky Mountain National Park

The Loch

Loch Vale

For a touch of the fantastic, Irecommend The Loch in RockyMountain National Park. Thishike is a total of 6.7 miles. Onthe trail between Alberta Fallsand Mills Junction is arehabilitated path. This was amulti-year project that wascompleted in 2012 by theNational Park Service and theRocky Mountain Conservancy.2.8 miles in the hike is LochVale, better known as The Loch. This is one of the most studiedwatersheds in the world. he restof the hike is fairly moderate inlevel of intensity.

Gorgeous view of Boulder

The Flatirons (otherwise knownas “The Crags”) has to be one ofmy favorite hikes just outside ofDenver. Whenever someonevisits from out of town, I try topersuade them into a hike alongthem. The Flatirons Vista Loopis situated in ChautauquaPark–right outside of Boulder.Arriving at Chautauqua Park, you’ll find a rolling field ofyellow and green. Once you getto the trail head you’ll have acouple of options. You caneither go for a 3.3 mile loop orone that is 1.9 miles. Both aregreat for hikers of all levels.

Frollicking dogs

Located near Littleton,Colorado, Glendale Farm is theperfect place to bring your dogfor a little off-leash action. Yes,there’s a great trail, but there’salso a 17 acre dog park! I have alot of friends who go here for apost-work bike or run. Ipersonally have only been hereon weekends. For what it’sworth, it’s not usually thatcrowded. If the hike is whatbrings you out there, you can dothe 1.6 mile trail in less than anhour. I haven’t had any troublewith them, but watch your stepfor rattle snakes.

Make sure to consult an official map beforebeginning your hike.

Let someone else know where you're hiking.

Bring water and a snack.

Be sure to clean up after yourself and leave notrace.

Rest frequently.

Don't push yourself past your limits. It's hard totake in the beauty of the hike if you're in pain!
