HHILLARILLARYYHERALD
Our children’s party was a blast! We had a great time with our magician, Andy Wonder, who delighted the children with his tricks and especially, his little rabbit. Our staff dressed up as American Indians and the children were given loot bags to enjoy after the party. Each bag had a small toy and lollies. During the afternoon, everyone enjoyed some great food, including sausage rolls, spring rolls, sandwiches, Minnie Mouse muffi ns and fruit. What a fantastic day! We hope to have an even bigger and better party next year!

Our staff had a fantastic time during the festivities
Greetings from Dean...Hello and welcome to this addition of the Hillary Herald!
It’s been a busy time for us at the village. We started off the year with a makeover of the furniture in the village centre. It already looks fantastic but we are still waiting on some more pieces to complete the look.
Work on the serviced apartment building and the patio above the village centre are progressing on schedule and we will continue to update you on the progress. We have also commenced the installation of fi bre to the village. Once this installation is complete residents will be able to access fi bre internet through their providers.
On Valentine’s Day, we had a special breakfast with TVNZ visiting our village
to ask residents about their secrets to love. Weather man Mattie Mclean managed to get the gentlemen to prepare beautiful bouquets for their wives. Everyone enjoyed the occasion immensely.
We have a busy schedule ahead of us, starting with the Andrew London Trio concert, Phil Fogg and the Casino evening, with many more events to come.
We look forward to seeing you all here at the village.
Kind regards,
Dean JacksonVillage Manager

Kitchen superstar takes Cashin Scholarship
Nika Wood, 18, who works at Yvette Williams as a kitchen hand, was picked for the 2017 Cashin Scholarship.
Nika is off to Otago University to study health science and hopes to become a doctor working in geriatric or paediatric care. She joined Yvette Williams last year as a kitchen worker and applied for the scholarship to ease her family’s financial burden.
“I feel awesome – it is great news. It’s a lot of stress off my shoulders,” she said.
When Nika was young she and her family were hurt in a house fire. The support
her family have received from health professionals inspired her to study medicine.
Nika is the sixth winner of the Cashin Scholarship. Congratulations Nika!

It was a busy end-of-year for the Evelyn Page team who won last year’s Ryman Mixed Fours Bowls Tournament.
Brian Wood, Leonie Wood, Yvonne Preston and Murray Pile flew off to Melbourne on Boxing Day to take on some of Australia’s best bowlers at the Ryman sponsored, Glen Waverley Christmas Bowls Carnival. The team had a brilliant five days in Melbourne.
“They looked after us like kings”, said Brian Wood.
Although the slower greens and weather conditions were a little difficult to adjust to, the team never gave up.
“We were always competitive,” said Murray Pile.
“We were never really thrashed.”
The trip included a visit to Ryman’s first Australian village Weary Dunlop, where they were treated to morning tea and “they felt quite at home.”
“We were there as Ryman representatives and we played our best,” said Yvonne.
“We did what we enjoyed. I’m just amazed at how fantastic everything went.”

During February, more than 5,000 residents sat down to a Long Lunch to coincide with Shrove Tuesday and the launch of Ryman Delicious.
Residents from Whangarei to Invercargill enjoyed a delicious meal, which included salmon cakes, salt and pepper hoki, beef cheeks, apricot chicken, and pancakes. The lunch was to celebrate the start of a food revolution at all Ryman villages across the country.
Ryman Delicious is a fresh approach to delivering food to Ryman’s 10,000 residents. Ryman Hospitality Manager Andrew Gibson said Delicious is all about putting a new twist on the old-fashioned home-cooked meals.
Innovations include a new Ryman-developed Calzone in partnership with
an artisan supplier, new Ryman club sandwiches and Ryman chicken salad. On the new menu, the tried and true rub shoulders with exotic newcomers.
“We’ve tried to get a good mix of the old favourites – we’ve still got mince on toast – with some much more interesting meals including Thai beef salad,” says Andrew.
The menu is just the start of the revolution. Delicious will also reorganise the kitchen space and will remove the serveries out of the village lounges.
Rosemary Deane, village manager at Essie Summers, says you cannot overestimate the importance of food to a village’s success.
“For many residents their day revolves around food. Giving them more choice about what they eat is great.’’

St Patrick's Day was a lot of fun at Edmund Hillary with green outfi ts, green food, and of course, Guinness!
Hi, my name is Keith. I was born in Featherston, Wairarapa. My family moved from Wairarapa to Wellington then Hamilton and fi nally to Auckland in 1928.
I studied in Cornwall Park District School and Auckland Grammar School. At the age of 15, I worked as an apprentice motor mechanic. After three years, I moved to McAlpine Refrigeration as a refrigeration mechanic. I was deployed in the Pacifi c as a signals and cypher offi cer during WWII. I was assigned as chief cypher offi cer at the army headquarters in Wellington after the war. I then worked for the
Whangarei branch at McAlpine as a refrigeration engineer. I also worked for Fisher and Paykel and Fletchers until retirement.
I married my wife Ngaire at St. Luke’s Church in Remuera. We met at primary school and then again after the war. We have two daughters, Ros and Vicky. My wife and I were involved in many church activities; I was a choir member and elder for 40 years. We also established the Auckland Junior Theatre and were instrumental in starting the Auckland East Arts Council and Auckland East Arts. My wife Ngaire passed away 10 years ago.
After retirement, I concentrated on my garden, cultivating fl owers. I love gardening, modern engineering, inventing things, and playing bowls.
I’ve been to three retirement villages before moving here, but in 2016 I moved to Edmund Hillary because it is the best!
Recently, I celebrated my 100th birthday. My secret for reaching this age is not to worry too much, just relax, and do not panic.

Introducing Ana Leah Gabucan!
Hello! My name is Ana Leah Gabucan. I am the new hospital coordinator at Edmund Hillary.
I was born in Davao city, Philippines, and I have three siblings. I have a Masters of Arts in Nursing from the Philippine Women’s University. During my time at the university I played for the varsity volleyball team and I was also a model!
I moved to New Zealand when I was offered a job in Christchurch. I have always wanted to explore New Zealand, and of course, to be independent from my family. I love New Zealand, it’s a beautiful place and the weather is great.
I’m loving it so far. People are nice and very welcoming.
I know my role as a coordinator is challenging, but I am determined and always love new challenges. I value team work and I am always eager to learn. I always try to extract the best outcome from whatever is thrown my way. I have met and worked with great people in different nursing fi elds.
I am sure that I will continue to grow at Edmund Hillary and I look forward to talking to all the residents every day.
Men’s Club beer tasting
Our Men’s Club had a great afternoon tasting
different beers from around the world. The
residents sampled their favourite beer and
expanded their taste buds with new ones.
The most popular beer of the afternoon
was Asahi from Japan.
