    Share the Wealth Hiatus

At the June Board Meeting we reviewed thecurrent state of our “Share the Wealth” pro-gram, and after considerable discussion theBoard voted to put the program on hold forthe rest of this year.

Share the Wealth has been an SVR tra-dition for at least 35 years, and was estab-lished to help with the postage expenses ofmailing The Drifter out every month. WhileThe Drifter continues to be the largest sin-gle expense for the Club every year, since Ijoined SVR in 2000 the program’s proceedshave been used to help offset our annualHoliday Party expenses.

We had a consensus from those of youthat completed the Membership Survey latelast year that we should only have Share theWealth at dinner meeting locations wherewe have more control over the facility anddon’t have to shout so everyone can hear. That hasn’t worked for us this year becauseits been difficult to announce in advancewhether or not we were going to have theprogram at a particular dinner meeting.

Just about every car club I’m aware ofhas some sort of program that raises addi-tional funds to help offset expenses. Someare short-term in nature and help raise mon-ey for a specific club need, and others areongoing programs that go into the club’sgeneral fund. If any of you have any sugges-tions or experience with other clubs on sim-ilar programs, we would love to talk withyou so please contact me or any other Boardmember.

    Speedsterfest—Should’ve Been There!

Just think—600 Porsches, 1600 Porsche fans, great food, entertainment and the fabuloussetting of Monterey. This was the type ofweekend that dreams are made of. The three-day weekend was put together to honor the50th anniversary of the Speedster, and Speed-sters were everywhere—about 250 to 300 ofthem!

At the Quail Lodge on Saturday, a fab-ulous display of early Porsches included nineAmerica Roadsters (only seventeen were everbuilt between 1951 and 1953), the proto-type Speedster, the first four Speedsters builtand the prototype Speedster D that became

the Convertible D in 1959. The PorscheMuseum sent over two cars: the first Por-sche made bearing the Porsche name (356-001) and the Museum’s America Roadster.

Rocky Taylor (President of the SequoiaRegion) and I kept bumping into each oth-er during all three days of the event. He cameover in his beautiful 1958 Coupe. Tom Sis-son and I drove to the event with a numberof SVR and 356CAR members. One of theweekend’s highlights for me was when BobMurray tossed me the keys to his newly re-stored 1955 Speedster and let me drive itover the Santa Cruz mountains down toHighway 1. Compared to any other car I’veever driven, this was absolutely driving in itspurest form!

Kim Nelson, Rocky Taylor & Allyson Pielop, andTom Sisson enjoy a day at Speedsterfest.

The weekend also included the oppor-tunity to drive on the Laguna Seca racetrack.I’ve had the opportunity to drive on a num-ber of Northern California tracks, but neverLaguna Seca. Going down through the cork-screw was definitely an “E ticket ride.” Tomand I were slotted right behind Frederick &Susan Rauch with Rick & CandiceWeidner just ahead.

All in all, this was a great weekend andkind of like going to a Porsche Parade—anevent you just never forget. If you would liketo see more photos of the event, Bob Can-non has posted quite a few athttp://www.356car.org/.See you on the Road!

    Drifting Back

    30 Years Ago (August 1974)

The August 2 dinner meeting was at Al-fred’s, on Stockton Boulevard near MackRoad and Highway 99. Social Chairs Bob& Marge Schleh arranged a dinner of sal-ad, 1/2 chicken, potatoes, vegetable, gar-lic bread, coffee and dessert—all for $5and with dancing at 10:30 pm. Outsidethe restaurant, Fred Colton (a transferfrom Arizona Region) had his beautifulblack Speedster on display.

In this month’s Drifter, Pig Pen said,“Hats off to Redwood Region for an ex-cellent driver’s school. We hear that it wasa safe, informative and fun event (formost).” This school was conducted atSears Point Raceway, and once again SVRmember Harvey Cain hit the wall withhis 911, thereby forever earning themoniker “Harvey Wallbanger.” Actually,he smote a mighty blow to the concrete

wall outside Turn 10 on the school’s lastlap with instructor and SVR memberClint deWitt in the passenger seat. The“Silver Streak” was expected to be out ofcommission for several weeks withnumerous abrasions and contusions.

    20 Years Ago (August 1984)

The August 4 FRAX Autocross at Splin-ter City (McClellan AFB), chaired byDon Harley and Ken Smith, providedplenty of seat time with, or without, aninstructor.

The Picnic and Charity Auction heldat Hamilton Park August 12 benefitedSpecial Olympics. Co-chaired by KernBreaux (who couldn’t attend) and MaryJo Austin, the day offered something foreveryone: free beer, wine and soda, a fam-ily picnic, lots of kids’ games, the charityauction, a 4s versus 6s volleyball game, and “celebrity” pie throwing. Bidding wasfierce for the Hank Malter pie.

    10 Years Ago (August 1994)

The August 12 dinner meeting was heldat the home of Jerry & Patti Thomas andfeatured a catered barbecue around thepool in their backyard.

August 14 was another Adopt-A-Highway pickup day for SVR’s two-milestretch along I-5. The eighteen luckytrash pluckers, supervised by Greg Peart, included Joe & Barbara Schumacher,Patti & Jerry & Chris & Kevin Thomas,Rik Larson, Chris & Shelagh Mackay,Tim Fleming, Mike Willis, Jim Dupree,Sue Moore, Nikki Duncan, Kelli Jenson,Tambra & Tom Kroetz, Pat Perez, andDoug McElroy. Claudia McElroy, VickiWil lis , Daymon Nightingale , andCyndee Peart had lunch ready andwaiting when the work was over.

Greg Peart moved up to SVR Presi-dent from Vice President after DwightMitchell resigned as President because ofnew business commitments.

    Speaking ofMembership

    By Tom SissonMembership Director

Welcome new members and transfers! SVRnow has 584 regular members and 15 dualmembers.

The Board frequently discusses what wecan do to keep both new and longer-termmembers active and interested in the Club.We would appreciate any ideas, comments, criticisms, etc. from any of you. This is achallenge facing all of PCA, not just Sacra-mento Valley Region.

New Member Chair Rick Weidner hasbeen doing a great job staying in touch withthose members who have been in the clubfor about 24 months or less. I hope evenmore of you will participate in the specialbreakfasts and other things that he is arrang-ing for the future as part of our G24 pro-gram.Special congratulations to John & KarenHawkins on 30 years of membership!

    June DE at Thunderhill

Over the past 30 months Susan and I havehosted three wine tours and two dinnermeetings for PCA-SVR. The June 4 DriverEducation event at Thunderhill in Willows,California was the biggest Club activity Ihave organized so far. Without the manyvolunteers it would not have been possible.

The event started with registration onThursday night at The Golden Pheasant Inn,which was followed by dinner at the CasaRamos restaurant. We had over thirty din-ner participants from many PCA regionsthroughout California. With the number ofattendees on Thursday night, it turned outto be an event of its own—a great kickofffor Friday’s day at the track.

load meetings following their driving ses-sions. During the day, I saw cohesiveness andlots of smiles. We had over 50 cars, whichincluded 35 Porsches ranging from a 1969911 to a 2004 GT3.

This event was a joint effort of PCA-SVR and TrackMasters Racing, and specialthanks goes out to all the attendees and to

Our goal was for everyone to have a greatand safe experience. Based on the commentswe received during and following the event,we succeeded. The most serious mishap wasa flat tire, and there were no tows and noneed for safety equipment.

Drivers had a combination of in-car andclassroom instruction, and attended down-

the many volunteers who contributed to thesafety and success of this event.

The event committee included: MikeWillis (Chief Steward), Rik Larson (GridSteward), Frederick Rauch (Event Chair/Co-Host), Russ Hildebrand (Chief Driv-ing Instructor), Doug Gale (TrackMastersOwner/Co-Host) and Jeff Lyon (TrackMas-ters Event Chief Driving Instructor).

Our instructors were: Tim Fleming, BobPeake, Zane Dobson, Warren Walker, RichMcGlumphy, Hari Matsuda, Boris Berman,George Fisher, Thom Fitzpatrick, BillAshurst, Larry Colen, Jim Paugh and MikeLingsch.

Doug Chalmers out on the track

Thanks also to the Thunderhill staff, andto Courtney Rauch and Ryan Bruce for thewater and ice runs. (We consumed 240 bot-tles of water!)

    Autocross Committee Forming

As most of you are aware, SVR has not heldautocrosses in the Sacramento area otherthan during CRAB. In order to be proactivein locating an autocross site we need to as-semble an Autocross Committee. Now is thetime to step forward and make a differencein the future of SVR autocrossing. Pleasecontact me if you would like to be part ofthis committee.

November DE and AX at Infineon

SVR and TrackMasters will co-host a multi-activity event at Infineon Raceway on No-vember 14, 2004. In addition to a DriverEducation event, an autocross will be heldin the paddock area. We need volunteersASAP to help plan and run the autocrossportion of this event. Please contact me ifyou would like to help out with this effort. We invite all PCA drivers and instructors toparticipate. 30th AnnualCARLSEN PORSCHE CONCOURS

    Time To Get Going

It was Friday morning, the sun was rising, and we were getting ready to leave for Shari’son I-5 to greet 30 other Porsches for theSan Simeon Tour. We checked around thehouse to make sure that we had all the re-lease forms, tour guidelines and route in-structions. When we had all that and ourweekend necessities packed, we headed out.

At the start location, we found others hadalso made it there. The release forms weresigned, we had a brief drivers’ meeting, andit was time to take 31 Porsches south on I-5to our first stop: the Westley rest area. Whenwe arrived, we found the Behrenses, Ad-amses, Origdulphs & Rays waiting for usto join the tour for the rest of the journey.(The Jacobsons would be meeting us in SanSimeon.) What a pretty sight to see thatmany Porsches in the rest stop! After mak-ing sure that all had taken advantage of the“facilities,” we headed out to Hollister forour next snack stop, as lunch was still a fewhours and many miles away.

The Porsche Part of The Tour

Since we now had 35 cars and the routewould now take us onto “Porsche roads,” webroke the tour into three groups: brisk, not-so-brisk, and the motoring group. The Mc-Mahens were our support vehicle, and theydecided to join the Fords and few others forthe motoring group. Of course Emily and Iled the brisk group, with Rich Swensen &Judy Hanna helping with not-so-briskgroup. From Hollister we drove downHighway 25 to 198 and jogged over to PeachTree. The roads, scenery, weather and Por-sche friends made this part of the tour espe-cially enjoyable. This year we did not evenmake any U-turns!

    Lunchtime At Last

We arrived at the Arciero Winery for lunchand some wine tasting on schedule, but longafter we had breakfast. The Hollister snacksreally helped with making it to lunch. Ourlunch of sandwiches, chips, and tasty cook-ies, topped off with wine gave us a goodopportunity to socialize with each other. Wehad 70 people at lunch, and the table talkwas about the cars, what the Club has tooffer, and about the drive from Sacramento. After lunch, everyone was free to spend sometime in Paso Robles visiting other wineries,or to head for Cambria or San Simeon. Shriners Concours 2004Weekend

If you were at any of the 2004 concoursweekend activities, you know it was a fan-tastic event. If you missed it, ask any onewho was there, and you are going to want toattend in 2005.

This was the largest attendance of anySVR concours event in known history. Wehad a total of 102 Porsche cars on the field.Of the total, 39 entered the formal Zone 7judging contest; the rest were there to dis-play their beautiful cars and have a goodtime.

The site for the event was the grassygrounds of the Shriners Hospital. This yearhad all the fun Shriners antics, like the key-stone cops and the mini bike escorts. Therewas live music, food, and lots of great cars.In addition to cars, the Shriners arranged tohave almost 30 classic wooden boats. Thesewere the best of the best from Tahoe. I haveseen many of these wooden works of art atthe Tahoe wooden boat show, but seeingthem out of the water was quite differentand wonderful.

In addition to the Sunday concours, wehad 3 other events to fill up the weekend.Friday night we kicked off the weekend withharness racing at Cal Expo. A special park-ing area was set up for Porsches and a racebetween a Model T and horse was the high-light of the evening. Saturday’s events be-gan at the Towe Ford Museum. Bob Gar-retson, who has had a spectacular Porscheracing career, spoke to a large group of SVRand 356 Register attendees. Bob describedracing at such venues as Lemans and Day-tona, in addition to describing what it waslike to flip a car at speeds approaching 200MPH! Saturday’s events continued with adinner and auction held at the SacramentoCoke bottling plant. The auction was funand the food was good.

The results for the Zone 7 concours arelisted to the right. In addition to the formaljudging, we had a fun people’s choice event. There was a small twist to the contest: Weasked four ladies from the Corvette club tojudge our cars, and we were able to judgetheirs. The cars they chose were: Leigh Ru-tledge’s 1956 356, Mike Ambrozewicz’s1989 Speedster, and Bob Jacobson’s 996 S4.

    Almost Dinner Time

Even with all the planning, it seems thatsomething can always creep up and cause aproblem. Our caterer for the arrival dinnerhad looked at our schedule from two yearsago and set it up for Saturday night, just likebefore. But this year we arrived on Friday, not Saturday. Of course, I discovered thiswhen we checked in and asked about howthe dinner was going.

Emily and I, with the help of others, spread the word by the pool that eveningabout the change in dinner plans. We alsogot the support of the Courtesy Inn and TheCavalier to put a message on everyone’sphones about the revised schedule. Anyway, with the support of all the tour participants, the dinner worked out perfectly on Satur-day instead of Friday. Everyone we talkedwith actually thought this schedule was bet-ter and would be more relaxing, so watchfor the same format on San Simeon Tour2006.

Free Day To Tour or Shop

Saturday was a free day to shop and walkaround Cambria. Some took day tours ofHearst Castle. This year we reserved eveningtours of the Castle for the whole group. Thiswas a first for most of us.

We actually did have our group dinnerthis evening, and again we had the oppor-tunity to meet our new members and seefriends we had not seen for a while. The din-ner was excellent and we arranged to returnfor dessert after we toured the Castle. Thisgave us another excuse for continuing theparty.

    Castle Evening Tours

Since the busses to the top of the hill seatonly 54 people, our little group (now 72) wasscheduled for two different tour times. Atthe top of the mountain, we were dividedagain into smaller groups for the tours. Wehad not been on a nighttime tour before. Itcovered a nice selection of Castle areas, andperiod-costumed “guests” throughout theproperty helped give us the flavor of how itmust have been when Hearst was using thecastle. The tours lasted about 2 hours, andthen we headed back for our waiting des-serts & after-dinner drinks, and even moresocializing.

    Time To Head Home

On Sunday it was time to head home. Thispart of the tour gave everyone the opportu-nity to choose their own route and pace. Some came straight home; others came backvia Highway 1, stopping off in Carmel orMonterey.

Why was this tour fun? It was becauseof the participants who made it happen. With 36 Porsches (okay, a couple of themwere non-Porsches), it was a large group, andwe think that is what was so special. It gaveothers and us the opportunity to meet andtalked about our cars, the Club and otherinterests as well.

Thanks to all of you for coming with us.Mike & Emily

How To Jack the Car Up

There are several ways to jack up and secureyour 993 for those DIY projects.

Before you start, I recommend you nottry to save any money in buying cheaper, off-brand jacks, jack stands or floor jacks. Whenit comes to buying equipment or tools thatmay jeopardize your car or your safety, al-ways buy the best. Sears is a good place tobuy jack stands and floor jacks. I am surethere are other places to buy these things, but you will need to look around yourself.

When buying a floor jack, make sure youbuy a model that has a removable cup. Whenjacking up your car with a floor jack that hasa cup installed, it really puts more stress onthe contacting point (since all the weight ison the small lip area). I remove the cup frommy floor jack and just use the flat area un-derneath the cup. This way the weight isdistributed over a larger area, and less dam-age occurs to the jack points on your car. Also if your car is lowered, there is no wayfor you to get the floor jack underneath thecar without removing the cup.

    Most importantly—always use a jackstand!

Personally, I do not place the jack standunderneath any suspension pieces or any-where that is not originally designated as a

jacking point. I am sure that there are sever-al other places to place a jack stand on the993 which will not damage the car whatso-ever, but you will have to make that decisionon your own.

There are three different configurationsfor having your car up in the air:(1) Just the front: Lift one side of the car

up using the floor jack on one rear jackpoint. Place a jack stand underneaththe front jack point and lower the floorjack. Repeat for the other side.

    (2) Just the rear: Place the floor jack un-derneath the engine crankcase. (Youcan only do this if your soundtray, en-gine under cover, or engine tray—what-ever it is called—has already been re-moved.) Jack the rear of the car up tothe height youdesire, place thejack stands un-derneath therear jack points, and slowly low-er the floor jack.

    (3) All four wheelsoff the ground:Do procedure(1) first andthen (2).

    Additional Jacking Tips

This tip was contributed by Sheperd Ringer.I use a hockey puck in the jack cup to

help distribute load and reduce impact. Ihave a bolt screwed into the center of thepuck, with the half-inch head protruding sothat it fits neatly into the holes on the car atthe jack point. This gives me peace of mindthat the car won’t slip off the jack while rais-ing and lowering. When I use this method,

The first stop was The Frank FamilyVineyard at Larkmead Lane, where we hada private wine tasting and history lessonon this fine vineyard, plus great Chardon-nay, Cabernets, Blanc de Noirs and more.

The second stop was at the Silver RoseInn & Winery at the corner of Silveradoand Rosedale, where we had a gourmetlunch prepared by the Palisades Market onour private deck overlooking the vineyardsand the nearby mountains. After lunch weenjoyed a private barrel tasting, a candle-light sit-down wine tasting and a tour ofthe B&B.

From Silver Rose we headed into Cal-istoga for a walking tour of the IndianSprings Spa and shopping at the localshops. I was told that the only thing thatwas missing was a nap in a hammock ab-

July gave us the StumpyMeadows Tour lead by the Walkers, and oursecond tour of the season led by StephanieMorgan, the Awesome Horsepower Tour. Thanks to the efforts of members like these,we have the ability to visit California’s trea-sured places and to share the experience withsome of our favorite people. I would alsolike to recognize Susan & Frederick Rauchfor hosting the July dinner meeting at theVillage Green Bar & Grille. Frederick hasgone over the top this year with a tour, driv-er education event, and a monthly dinner, all in addition to serving as our Competi-tion and Safety Director.

This month, Dwight & Linda Mitchellhave put together our monthly dinner meet-ing all the way from their new home in Flor-

ida. If you haven’t already done so, pleasecontact Mike or Emily Willis (916-363-8313), who are taking the reservations lo-cally on behalf of the Mitchells. The dinnerwill be held at Riva’s in Gold River on Thurs-day, August 12.

If you plan to attend the Monterey His-toric Races this year, please join Cathy andme for a BBQ lunch at our campsite (Chap-arral #57). The BBQ will be during the lunchbreak on Saturday, August 14. Please let usknow if you can join us by calling 916-415-1539 before Wednesday, August 11.

September is typically the busiest monthof our PCA-SVR year, and this year is noexception. Andy & Dianna Leight are host-ing the dinner meeting on Thursday the 9th

at a great place in old Auburn: the Brook-side Grill & Coffee House. Rick Weidner isputting together another New Member Touron Saturday the 11th.

On the afternoon of Sunday, September12, Kern & Cindi Breaux will host the Club’sCharity Auction at the Breaux Estate. Thisevent brings together the talented and co-medic auction team of Larry Wilson andKirk Bradford as they sell items donated byClub members. It is a fun afternoon featur-ing homemade goodies, donations (which

may include trips or dinners), and somefound “treasures” from the just-cleaned-outgarage.

The following weekend, September 18& 19, is one of the Club’s annual overnighttreks, Carrera de Sierra. Whether you wantto run the time, speed & distance rally, orprefer the less formal approach of the tour, you’ll enjoy a great weekend in the Sierra. This year’s destination is Truckee, just in caseany of you get lost en route!

If that were not enough, Andy & Dian-na Leight and Judy Hanna & Rich Swen-son have planned an overnight camping tripto Lake Almanor. It has been a number ofyears since we’ve had an official Club cam-pout, and they are fun for everyone. I antic-ipate a few may arrive early and stay a cou-ple of nights, while others may only spendthe night of Saturday the 25th. Heck, somemay tour up for just the day. All will have agreat time!

That’s it for this month. We still needsome assistance with the Holiday Party andCRAB for next year. Give us a call; we’llfind a place to use your help.

I can’t deny it; I’m a technology freak. I findgadgets irresistible, and will find some ex-cuse to buy most any “toy” that catches myinterest. Even when I am buying cars, I al-ways buy them fully loaded!

My latest acquisition? A brand new, 2004Friendly Robotics RL850 RoboMower!Speed Yellow! When I first started seeingads for these miracle machines two or threeyears ago, I thought it would be cool to haveone if they really worked, but I doubted.

Ever since moving to the Davis sevenyears ago, I have struggled with keeping mylawns mowed. Its just too darn hot in theafternoons & evenings to be doing that typeof work. Cool weekend mornings are re-served for important things like breakfast onthe patio at the coffee shop, or washing andwaxing the Porsche. There is no time left tomow lawns. I tried a gardening service for awhile, but it really irked me to pay someoneelse to do a job I am capable of doing, anddoing better, myself.

Then along comes the RoboMower—the answer to all my problems! Before buyingone, I did a lot of research online becausethey are pretty expensive. Almost unani-mously, people liked them, and said theyworked great, even on sloped and irregular-ly shaped locations. So in late May, I put inmy order, and a week later a very large boxarrived. Immediately I unpacked it—andeven read the directions!

It isn’t all a cake walk, though; you haveto stake down a perimeter wire about a footin from the edge of your lawn so it doesn’ttry to mow the entire neighborhood. Thefirst lawn (of three) took me about 5 hoursto get the wire installed and adjusted.

Then I just pushed the button to acti-vate the perimeter wire, used the cordedremote to drive the mower out into themiddle of the lawn, pushed the “GO” but-ton, and opened a beer.

This thing really is amazing. It takes awhile to mow each lawn, but what do I care?I’m not out there pushing it! And it does anice job. I wish all my gadget purchases werethis useful. Now I should have a few moreweekend hours to try out that new back roadI spotted yesterday.
