Chapter 45 (45:1) w15 6/15 pp. 5-6 Christ—The Power of God “ALL ATE AND WERE SATISFIED” 11. Why are you convinced that Christ will soon use his power earth wide, and what are you thus moved to do? 11 When on earth, Jesus worked in a relatively small territory for a limited time of three and a half years. (Matt. 15:24) As a glorified King, his territory will extend to the four corners of the earth. (Ps. 72:8) Jesus‟ miracles give us confidence in his ability and his desire soon to use his authority for our good. Though we cannot perform miracles, we can enthusiastically draw people‟s attention to God‟s inspired Word. Bible prophecies guarantee better times ahead. As dedicated Witnesses of Jehovah who possess this precious knowledge about the future, do we not sense that we have a debt toward others? (Rom. 1:14, 15) May meditating on this move us to tell others the good news of God‟s Kingdom.—Ps. 45:1; 49:3. (Psalm 45:1) My heart is stirred by something good. I say: “My song is about a king.” May my tongue be the stylus of a skilled copyist. (45:1,2) w04 3/1 p. 17 „The Faithful Slave‟ Passes the Test! Inspection Time Begins! 17. How did faithful anointed Christians „enter into the joy of their master‟? 17 Harvesttime is a joyful time. (Psalm 126:6) It is fitting, then, that when in 1919, Jesus entrusted his faithful anointed brothers with increased responsibility, he said: “You were faithful over a few things. I will appoint you over many things. Enter into the joy of your master.” (Matthew 25:21, 23) Moreover, the joy of the Master as newly enthroned King of God‟s Kingdom surpasses our imagination. (Psalm 45:1,2, 6, 7) The faithful slave class share that joy by representing the King and increasing his interests on earth. (2 Corinthians 5:20) Their delight is seen in the prophetic words of Isaiah 61:10: “Without fail I shall exult in Jehovah. My soul will be joyful in my God. For he has clothed me with the garments of salvation.” (Psalm 45:1,2) My heart is stirred by something good. I say: “My song is about a king.” May my tongue be the stylus of a skilled copyist.

Our Active Leader Today 1, 2. (a) How is Christ‟s kingly activity since 1914 depicted in the Bible? (b) What actions has Christ undertaken since his enthronement? CHRIST was enthroned as King of Jehovah‟s Messianic Kingdom in 1914. How do we imagine him now in our mind‟s eye? As a contemplative king sitting on his throne, glancing down to earth from time to time to see how his congregation is faring? If so, we should revise our opinion. The Psalms and the book of Revelation depict him as an energetic king on horseback, riding forth “conquering and to complete his conquest,” continuing to ultimate “success.”—Rev. 6:2; Ps. 2:6-9; 45:1-4. 2 Christ‟s first kingly action after his enthronement was his victory over “the dragon and its angels.” As the archangel Michael in command of his angels, Christ hurled Satan and his demons out of the holy heavens and confined them to the vicinity of the earth. (Rev. 12:7-9) Then, in his role as Jehovah‟s “messenger of the covenant,” Jesus came with his Father to carry out an inspection of the spiritual temple. (Mal. 3:1) He judged Christendom, the most reprehensible part of “Babylon the Great,” finding her guilty of bloodshed and of spiritual adultery with the political system of this world.—Rev. 18:2, 3, 24. (Psalm 45:1-4) My heart is stirred by something good. I say: “My song is about a king.” May my tongue be the stylus of a skilled copyist.

2 You are the most handsome of the sons of men. Gracious speech flows from your lips. That is why God has blessed you forever.

3 Strap your sword on your side, O mighty one, In your dignity and your splendor. 4 And in your splendor go on to victory; Ride in the cause of truth and humility and righteousness, And your right hand will accomplish awe-inspiring things. (45:1-6) w11 8/15 p. 16 They Found the Messiah! Hail the Messianic King! 20. How was the foretold rulership of the Messiah fulfilled? 20 As foretold, God declared that Jesus is his Son. (Read Psalm 2:7; Matthew 3:17.) Also, crowds hailed Jesus and the coming Kingdom, and we joyfully speak about him and his blessed rule. (Mark 11:7-10) Christ will soon destroy his foes as he „rides in the cause of truth, humility, and righteousness.‟ (Ps. 2:8, 9; 45:1-6) His kingship will then bring about earth-wide peace and prosperity. (Ps. 72:1, 3, 12, 16; Isa. 9:6, 7) How privileged we are to proclaim these truths as Witnesses of Jehovah, whose beloved Son already reigns in heaven as the Messianic King! (Psalm 45:1-6) My heart is stirred by something good.

5 Your arrows are sharp, making peoples fall before you; They pierce the hearts of the king‟s enemies.

6 God is your throne forever and ever; The scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of uprightness. (45:2) w02 8/15 p. 12 “I Set the Pattern for You” Love for the Truths He Taught 10. How did Jesus fulfill prophecies regarding the quality of his teaching? 10 Jesus‟ love of his subject would never allow him to teach merely by rote, in a manner that was tired or mechanical. Inspired prophecies had suggested that the Messiah would speak with „charm on his lips,‟ using “words of elegance.” (Psalm 45:2; Genesis 49:21) Jesus fulfilled those prophecies by keeping his message fresh and alive, using “winsome words” as he taught the truths he so loved. (Luke 4:22) No doubt his enthusiasm animated his features, and his eyes shone with a lively interest in his subject. What a pleasure it must have been to listen to him, and what a fine pattern for us to follow when we talk to others about what we have learned! (Psalm 45:2) You are the most handsome of the sons of men. Gracious speech flows from your lips. That is why God has blessed you forever. (45:4) w14 2/15 p. 5 Hail Christ, the Glorious King! THE KING RIDES “IN THE CAUSE OF TRUTH” 11. How does Christ ride “in the cause of truth”? 11 Read Psalm 45:4. The Warrior-King does not wage a war of conquest in order to occupy territories and subjugate peoples. He wages a righteous war with noble objectives. He rides “in the cause of truth and humility and righteousness.” The greatest truth that must be defended is that of Jehovah‟s universal sovereignty. Satan challenged the legitimacy of Jehovah‟s rulership when he rebelled against Him. Since then, that fundamental truth has been disputed by both demons and humans. Now the time has come for Jehovah‟s anointed King to ride forth to establish the truth of Jehovah‟s sovereignty once and for all. (Psalm 45:4) And in your splendor go on to victory; Ride in the cause of truth and humility and righteousness, And your right hand will accomplish awe-inspiring things. (45:4) w12 11/15 p. 14 Jesus Set the Pattern of Humility JESUS WILL “RIDE IN THE CAUSE OF TRUTH AND HUMILITY” 16. What shows that humility will continue to characterize the activities of God‟s Son? 16 Humility will continue to characterize the activities of the Son of God. Foretelling how Jesus will act against His enemies from an exalted heavenly position, the psalmist sang: “In your splendor go on to success; ride in the cause of truth and humility and righteousness.” (Ps. 45:4) Along with truth and righteousness, Jesus Christ will ride in the cause of humility at Armageddon. And what will happen at the end of his Thousand Year Reign when the Messianic King “has brought to nothing all government and all authority and power”? Will he display humility? Yes, for he will „hand over the kingdom to his God and Father.‟—Read 1 Corinthians 15:24-28. (Psalm 45:4) And in your splendor go on to victory; Ride in the cause of truth and humility and righteousness, And your right hand will accomplish awe-inspiring things. (45:4) w14 6/15 p. 16 “You Must Love Jehovah Your God”

HOW WE CAN SHOW OUR LOVE FOR GOD 18. Love for God moves us to do what in connection with the good news? 18 Zealously share “the truth of the good news” with others. (Gal. 2:5) Our love for God moves us to speak about the Messianic Kingdom of his dear Son, who will “ride in the cause of truth” at Armageddon. (Ps. 45:4; Rev. 16:14, 16) What a joy it is to have a part in making disciples by helping people to learn about God‟s love and his promised new world!—Matt. 28:19, 20. (Psalm 45:4) And in your splendor go on to victory; Ride in the cause of truth and humility and righteousness, And your right hand will accomplish awe-inspiring things. (45:7) w05 1/1 p. 9 Hold to the Pattern Jesus Set A Proper View of Right and Wrong 9. How did Jesus view right and wrong? 9 Despite living for 33 years among imperfect people, Jesus remained “without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15) In fact, when prophesying about the Messiah, the psalmist said: “You have loved righteousness and you hate wickedness.” (Psalm 45:7; Hebrews 1:9) In this too Christians strive to imitate Jesus. Not only do they know right from wrong; they hate what is wrong and love what is right. (Amos 5:15) This helps them to battle against their inborn sinful inclinations.—Genesis 8:21; Romans 7:21-25. (Psalm 45:7) You loved righteousness, and you hated wickedness. That is why God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of exultation more than your companions. (45:7) w11 2/15 p. 24 Love Righteousness With All Your Heart Love Righteousness With All Your Heart 1. What will help us to follow “the tracks of righteousness”? BY MEANS OF his Word and his holy spirit, Jehovah is leading his people in “the tracks of righteousness.” (Ps. 23:3) Since we are imperfect, however, we tend to deviate from that path. To return to doing what is right calls for determined effort. What will help us to succeed? Like Jesus, we must love doing what is right.—Read Psalm 45:7. (Psalm 45:7) You loved righteousness, and you hated wickedness. That is why God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of exultation more than your companions. (45:7) w11 2/15 p. 28 Do You Hate Lawlessness? Do You Hate Lawlessness? 2. Followers of Christ should develop a hatred for what? 2 In addition to teaching his disciples about love, however, Jesus taught them what to hate. It was said with reference to Jesus: “You loved righteousness, and you hated lawlessness [wickedness].” (Heb. 1:9; Ps. 45:7) This shows that we must develop not only a love of righteousness but also a hatred of sin, or lawlessness. It is noteworthy that the apostle John specifically stated: “Everyone who practices sin is also practicing lawlessness, and so sin is lawlessness.”—1 John 3:4. (Psalm 45:7) You loved righteousness, and you hated wickedness. That is why God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of exultation more than your companions. (45:8,9) w14 2/15 pp. 8-9 Rejoice Over the Marriage of the Lamb! „HIS GARMENTS ARE PERFUMED‟ 3, 4. (a) What is said of the Bridegroom‟s wedding garments, and what adds to his joy? (b) Who are “the daughters of kings” and “the royal consort” who share the Bridegroom‟s joy?

3 Read Psalm 45:8, 9. The Bridegroom, Jesus Christ, puts on his glorious royal wedding garments. Fittingly, his attire gives off a delightful fragrance like that of “the choicest perfumes,” such as myrrh and cassia, which were among the ingredients of the holy anointing oil used in Israel.—Ex. 30:23-25. 4 The heavenly music that fills his palace adds to the joy that the Bridegroom feels as his marriage approaches. His joy is shared by “the royal consort,” the heavenly part of God‟s organization, which includes “the daughters of kings,” that is, the holy angels. What a thrill it is to hear celestial voices declare: “Let us rejoice and be overjoyed . . . because the marriage of the Lamb has arrived”! (Psalm 45:8,9) All your garments are scented with myrrh and aloeswood and cassia; From the grand ivory palace, stringed instruments make you rejoice. 9 The daughters of kings are among your ladies of honor. The royal consort has taken her stand at your right hand, adorned in gold of Oʹphir. (45:13,14a) w06 6/1 pp. 8-9 Highlights From Book Two of Psalms JEHOVAH IS OUR “REFUGE AND STRENGTH” Scriptural Questions Answered: 45:13,14a—Who is “the king‟s daughter” who “will be brought to the king”? She is the daughter of the “King of eternity,” Jehovah God. (Revelation 15:3) She represents the glorified congregation of 144,000 Christians, whom Jehovah adopts as his children by anointing them with his spirit. (Romans 8:16) This “daughter” of Jehovah, “prepared as a bride adorned for her husband,” will be brought to the bridegroom—the Messianic King.—Revelation 21:2. (Psalm 45:13,14a) Inside the palace the king‟s daughter is absolutely magnificent; Her clothing is adorned with gold. 14 She will be brought to the king in richly woven garments. (45:14,15) w03 2/15 p. 19 What Does the Lord‟s Evening Meal Mean to You? Searching for “Other Sheep” 9. How was the identity of the “great crowd” clarified in 1935, and how did this affect some who had been partaking of the Memorial emblems? 9 In time, Jehovah‟s organization began to focus attention on others in addition to Christ‟s anointed followers. A notable development along these lines took place in the mid-1930‟s. Before then, God‟s people viewed the “great crowd” of Revelation 7:9 as a secondary spiritual class that would be associated with the 144,000 resurrected anointed ones in heaven—like bridesmaids or companions of the bride of Christ. (Psalm 45:14,15; Revelation 7:4; 21:2, 9) But on May 31, 1935, in a discourse given at a convention of Jehovah‟s Witnesses in Washington, D.C., U.S.A., it was Scripturally explained that the “great crowd” (“great multitude,” King James Version) refers to the “other sheep” who live during the time of the end. (John 10:16) After that convention, some who had previously partaken of the Memorial emblems stopped partaking because they realized that their hope was earthly, not heavenly. (Psalm 45:14,15) She will be brought to the king in richly woven garments. The virgin companions following her are brought in before you. 15 They will be brought with rejoicing and joy; They will enter into the king‟s palace. They are the “great crowd” of true worshippers, who join and support the anointed remnant. Since they “come out of the great tribulation” alive, they will be on earth when the marriage of the Messianic King is completed in heaven. (Revelation 7:9, 13, 14) On that occasion, they will be filled with “rejoicing and joyfulness.” (Psalm 45:14b,15) The virgin companions following her are brought in before you. 15 They will be brought with rejoicing and joy; They will enter into the king‟s palace. (45:16) w06 6/1 pp. 8-9 Highlights From Book Two of Psalms JEHOVAH IS OUR “REFUGE AND STRENGTH” Scriptural Questions Answered: 45:16—In what way will there come to be sons in place of the king‟s forefathers? When Jesus was born on earth, he had earthly forefathers. They will become his sons when he resurrects them from the dead during his Thousand Year Reign. Some of them will come to be among those appointed as “princes in all the earth.” (Psalm 45:16) Your sons will take the place of your forefathers. You will appoint them as princes in all the earth. (45:16) w01 1/15 pp. 19-20 Keep in Step With Jehovah‟s Organization Grateful for Spiritual Enlightenment 14. At the international convention in 1950, what was learned about the princes mentioned at Psalm 45:16? 14 At the 1950 international convention in New York City, the princes of Psalm 45:16 were precisely identified. It was an electrifying moment when Brother Frederick Franz spoke on this subject and explained that princes of the new earth were among us. At that convention and at subsequent ones, there have been numerous flashes of spiritual light. (Psalm 97:11) How grateful we are that our path “is like the bright light that is getting lighter and lighter”! (Psalm 45:16) Your sons will take the place of your forefathers. You will appoint them as princes in all the earth. (45:16) w00 7/15 p. 20 The Resurrection Hope Has Power The Resurrection Hope Fulfilled! 19, 20. (a) What individuals of Bible record will be raised to life on earth? (b) To whose resurrection do you look forward? 19 The resurrection hope has become a glorious reality for anointed ones who have been faithful unto death. (Romans 8:18; 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18; Revelation 2:10) Survivors of “the great tribulation” will see the resurrection hope realized on earth as „the sea gives up those dead in it, and death and Hades give up those dead in them.‟ (Revelation 7:9, 13, 14; 20:13) Among those raised to life on earth will be Job, who suffered the loss of seven sons and three daughters. Imagine his joy in welcoming them back—and how delighted they will be that they have seven more brothers and three other beautiful sisters!—Job 1:1, 2, 18, 19; 42:12-15. 20 What a blessing it will be when Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah—yes and so many others, including “all the prophets”—are raised to life on earth! (Luke 13:28) One of those prophets was Daniel, who was promised a resurrection under Messianic rule. For some 2,500 years, Daniel has rested in the grave, but by the power of the resurrection, he will soon „stand up for his lot‟ as one of the “princes in all the earth.” (Daniel 12:13; Psalm 45:16) What a thrill it will be to welcome back not only faithful ones of old but also your own father, mother, son, daughter, or other dear ones taken from you

by the enemy death! (Psalm 45:16) Your sons will take the place of your forefathers. You will appoint them as princes in all the earth. (45:16) w06 5/15 p. 24 Are You Prepared for Survival? Progressive Adjustments Prepare Us 14. What training program began in 1959? 14 Back in 1950, careful consideration of Psalm 45:16 gave rise to an ongoing training program. That text reads: “In place of your forefathers there will come to be your sons, whom you will appoint as princes in all the earth.” Elders now taking the lead in the congregation are being trained for present and post-Armageddon theocratic duties. (Revelation 16:14, 16) The Kingdom Ministry School was started in 1959. At that time, a month-long course of instruction was provided primarily for congregation servants, as presiding overseers were then called. This school has now been extended to offer instruction to all overseers and ministerial servants. These brothers, in turn, take the lead in training individual Witnesses of Jehovah in their respective congregations. Thus, all are assisted spiritually and are helped to increase the effectiveness of their ministry as proclaimers of the good news of the Kingdom.—Mark 13:10. (Psalm 45:16) Your sons will take the place of your forefathers. You will appoint them as princes in all the earth.

Chapter 46 (46:1) w15 1/15 p. 8 Give Thanks to Jehovah and Be Blessed Give Thanks to Jehovah and Be Blessed 1. Why is Jehovah worthy of our thanks? JEHOVAH, the Giver of “every good gift and every perfect present,” is indeed worthy of our thanks. (Jas. 1:17) As our loving Shepherd, he tenderly cares for all our physical and spiritual needs. (Ps. 23:1-3) He has proved to be “our refuge and strength”—especially in times of distress! (Ps. 46:1) Surely we have many reasons to agree wholeheartedly with the psalmist who wrote: “Give thanks to Jehovah, for he is good; his loyal love endures forever.”—Ps. 106:1. (Psalm 46:1) God is our refuge and strength, A help that is readily found in times of distress. (46:1) w03 9/1 pp. 13-14 Trust in Jehovah Completely in Times of Distress When a Job Is Lost or Income Is Meager 3. What economic pressures do Jehovah‟s servants face in these “critical times,” and how do we know that God is willing to help us? 3 In these “critical times,” we as Christians face the same economic pressures that other people do. (2 Timothy 3:1) Hence, we may suddenly find ourselves laid off our job. Or we may have little choice but to work long hours for meager wages. Under such circumstances, we might find it difficult to „provide for those who are our own.‟ (1 Timothy 5:8) Is the Most High God willing to help us at such times? Most definitely! Of course, Jehovah does not shield us from all the hardships of life in this system of things. If we trust in him, however, the words of Psalm 46:1 will prove true in our case: “God is for us a refuge and strength, a help that is readily to be found during distresses.” How, though, can we show that we trust in Jehovah completely in times of financial distress? (Psalm 46:1) God is our refuge and strength, A help that is readily found in times of distress.

(46:1) w02 8/15 p. 17 “Follow Me Continually” Showing Love for Truths We Teach 7, 8. What are some ways in which we can show others that we love the truths we have learned from the Bible? Give an example. 7 As we teach others, how can we show that we love the truths we have learned from God‟s Word? Following Jesus‟ example, we rely heavily on the Bible in our preaching and teaching. In recent times, God‟s people around the world have been encouraged to make greater use of the Bible in their public ministry. As you apply that suggestion, seek ways to let the householder know that you yourself value what you are sharing from the Bible.—Matthew 13:52. 8 For example, in the wake of last year‟s terrorist attack in New York City, one Christian sister was sharing Psalm 46:1, 11 with the people she met in her ministry. She first asked people how they were coping in the aftermath of the tragedy. She listened carefully to their response, acknowledged it, then said: “May I share a scripture with you that has really comforted me during this difficult time?” Very few refused, and many excellent discussions resulted. In talking with young people, the same sister often says: “I have been teaching the Bible for 50 years now, and do you know what? I have never come across a single problem that this book can‟t help to solve.” By using a sincere, enthusiastic approach, we show people that we value and love what we have learned from God‟s Word.—Psalm 119:97, 105. (Psalm 46:1) God is our refuge and strength, A help that is readily found in times of distress. (46:1) w08 3/15 p. 13 Jehovah Hears Our Cries for Help Rely on Jehovah‟s Help 7. What support is assured for us? 7 We can certainly be assured that Jehovah is willing and able to assist us when we are afflicted with distresses. “God is for us a refuge and strength, a help that is readily to be found during distresses.” (Ps. 34:15-18; 46:1) How does God provide that help? Consider what 1 Corinthians 10:13 says: “God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear, but along with the temptation he will also make the way out in order for you to be able to endure it.” Jehovah may maneuver matters to remove our adversity, or he may give us the strength we need to endure it. Either way, we are helped. (Psalm 46:1) God is our refuge and strength, A help that is readily found in times of distress. (46:1) w00 12/15 pp. 16-17 Help Others Walk Worthily of Jehovah Be Specific in Prayer 14. How are specific prayers related to helping others? 14 The possibilities abound for you to include in your personal prayers individuals you know who need Jehovah‟s support, consolation, wisdom, and holy spirit, or any of its resulting fruits. Because of distance or other circumstances, you may feel limited in what material or direct help you can provide. But do not forget to pray for your brothers and sisters. You know that they want to walk worthily of Jehovah, yet they may truly need help to do that lastingly. A key to helping is your prayers.—Psalm 18:2; 20:1, 2; 34:15; 46:1; 121:1-3. Meeting Today‟s Adversities With Courage REASONS FOR DISPLAYING COURAGE 15. Give examples of the conviction of God‟s servants, and explain how we can have similar courage. 15 Note some expressions of the strong conviction of God‟s servants. David said: “Jehovah is my strength and my shield. In him my heart has trusted, and I have been helped, so that my heart exults.” (Ps. 28:7) Paul expressed his unwavering confidence, saying: “In all these things we are coming off completely victorious through him that loved us.” (Rom. 8:37) Likewise, as danger loomed, Jesus left no doubt in his listeners‟ minds that he had a strong relationship with God, saying: “I am not alone, because the Father is with me.” (John 16:32) What is evident in these expressions? Each reveals unwavering trust in Jehovah. Our developing similar confidence in God can give us the courage to face any of today‟s adversities.—Read Psalm 46:1-3. (Psalm 46:1-3) God is our refuge and strength, A help that is readily found in times of distress.

2 That is why we will not fear, though the earth undergoes change, Though the mountains topple into the depths of the sea,

3 Though its waters roar and foam over, Though the mountains rock on account of its turbulence. (Selah) (46:1-3) w06 6/1 p. 9 Highlights From Book Two of Psalms JEHOVAH IS OUR “REFUGE AND STRENGTH” Lessons for Us: 46:1-3. Whatever calamity may confront us, we must have unwavering confidence that “God is for us a refuge and strength.” (Psalm 46:1-3) God is our refuge and strength, A help that is readily found in times of distress.

2 That is why we will not fear, though the earth undergoes change, Though the mountains topple into the depths of the sea,

3 Though its waters roar and foam over, Though the mountains rock on account of its turbulence. (Selah) (46:9) w08 5/15 p. 13 Deliverance by God‟s Kingdom Is at Hand! Deliverance by God‟s Kingdom Is at Hand! 3, 4. What will be the result when God‟s will is done on earth? 3 What will happen to mankind when God‟s will is done on earth? Jehovah will “wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore.” (Rev. 21:4) People will not get sick or die because of inherited sin and imperfection. The dead in God‟s memory will have the opportunity to live forever, for the Bible promises: “There is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous.” (Acts 24:15) There will be no more war, illness, or hunger, and the earth will be transformed into a paradise. Even animals that are now dangerous will be at peace with humans and with one another.—Ps. 46:9; 72:16; Isa. 11:6-9; 33:24; Luke 23:43. 4 With such marvelous blessings resulting from Kingdom rule, it is no wonder that Bible prophecy speaks of life at that time in these comforting words: “The meek ones themselves will possess the earth, and they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace.” But what about those who cause trouble? The Scriptures foretell: “Just a little while longer, and the wicked one will be no more.” However, “those hoping in Jehovah are the ones that will possess the earth.”—Ps. 37:9-11. a refuge and strength.”

(Psalm 46:9) He is bringing an end to wars throughout the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; He burns the military wagons with fire. (46:9) w06 5/15 p. 28 The Joys of Walking in Integrity „Blessings That Make Us Rich‟ Now 9, 10. How does our outlook for the future differ from that of the world? 9 Assurance that world problems will soon be solved. Despite scientific and technological know-how and the sincere efforts of certain leaders, serious problems of present-day life remain unsolved. Klaus Schwab, founder of the World Economic Forum, recently noted that “the list of challenges facing the world grows ever longer and the time to address them grows shorter.” He spoke of “dangers that transcend national boundaries like terrorism, environmental degradation and financial instability.” Schwab concluded: “Now, more than ever, the world is faced with realities that call for collective and decisive action.” As the 21st century moves forward, the overall outlook for mankind‟s future remains bleak. 10 How gratifying to know that Jehovah has instituted an arrangement that is capable of solving all of mankind‟s problems—the Messianic Kingdom of God! By means of it, the true God will „make wars to cease‟ and bring about „abundant peace.‟ (Psalm 46:9; 72:7) The anointed King, Jesus Christ, „will deliver the poor one, the afflicted one, and the lowly one from oppression and from violence.‟ (Psalm 72:12-14) Under Kingdom rule, there will be no food shortage. (Psalm 72:16) Jehovah “will wipe out every tear from [our] eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:4) The Kingdom has already been established in heaven and will shortly take the necessary action to affect every affair on the earth.—Daniel 2:44; Revelation 11:15. (Psalm 46:9) He is bringing an end to wars throughout the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; He burns the military wagons with fire. (46:9) w04 2/1 p. 22 “The Scene of This World Is Changing” The Best Is Yet to Come! 18, 19. What changes are you looking forward to in the new world, and why will it have been worth the wait? 18 Jehovah will soon ring down the curtain on Satan and his supporters. Thereafter, with God‟s blessing, faithful survivors of the end of this system will begin to work on “scene” changes that will endure forever. War will no longer mar the scene; God will make “wars to cease to the extremity of the earth.” (Psalm 46:9) In place of food shortages, “there will come to be plenty of grain on the earth; . . . there will be an overflow.” (Psalm 72:16) Gone will be prisons, police stations, sexually transmitted diseases, drug czars, divorce courts, bankruptcy proceedings, and terrorism.—Psalm 37:29; Isaiah 33:24; Revelation 21:3-5. 19 The memorial tombs will be emptied, and billions of resurrected ones—more players—will come into view. What joy there will be as one generation is reunited with another and when long-separated loved ones hug one another in a warm, heartfelt embrace! Eventually, everyone living will worship Jehovah. (Revelation 5:13) When the changes are complete, the curtain will rise upon an earth-wide paradise. How will you feel as you survey the scene? No doubt you will be moved to exclaim, „I waited a long time for this, but it has been well worth the wait!‟ (Psalm 46:9) He is bringing an end to wars throughout the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; He burns the military wagons with fire.

(46:9) w02 1/1 p. 8 All True Christians Are Evangelizers All True Christians Are Evangelizers 1. What good news do people need to hear, and how have Jehovah‟s Witnesses been exemplary in spreading such news? IN A world where disasters happen daily, it is truly comforting to know that as the Bible proclaims, war, crime, hunger, and oppression will soon end. (Psalm 46:9; 72:3, 7, 8, 12, 16) Indeed, is this not good news that everyone needs to hear? Jehovah‟s Witnesses think so. They are known everywhere as ones who preach “good news of something better.” (Isaiah 52:7) True, many Witnesses have suffered persecution for their determination to tell the good news. But they have the best interests of people at heart. And what a record of zeal and perseverance the Witnesses have built up! (Psalm 46:9) He is bringing an end to wars throughout the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; He burns the military wagons with fire. (46:9) w06 12/1 p. 24 Love the God Who Loves You Cultivating Love for God 19. What promises of Jehovah draw us to him? 19 We are also drawn to Jehovah when we consider what he has in store for humankind. He has promised to bring an end to sickness, sorrow, and death. (Revelation 21:3, 4) Once mankind is brought to perfection, no one will suffer depression, discouragement, or tragedy. Hunger, poverty, and war will be no more. (Psalm 46:9; 72:16) The earth will be transformed into a paradise. (Luke 23:43) Jehovah will bring these blessings, not because he has to, but because he loves us. (Psalm 46:9) He is bringing an end to wars throughout the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; He burns the military wagons with fire. (46:9) w05 7/1 p. 16 “Bringing Good News of Something Better” News That Everyone Needs to Hear 3. (a) What good news does the Bible proclaim? (b) Why do you value the good news of the Kingdom? 3 In such a gloomy world, can better news be found? Indeed it can! It is comforting to know that the Bible proclaims good news. It is the news that sickness, hunger, crime, war, and all sorts of oppression will be brought to an end by God‟s Kingdom. (Psalm 46:9; 72:12) Is that not news that everyone needs to hear? Jehovah‟s Witnesses certainly think so. Therefore, they are known everywhere for their ongoing effort to share the good news of God‟s Kingdom with people of all nations.—Matthew 24:14. (Psalm 46:9) He is bringing an end to wars throughout the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; He burns the military wagons with fire. (46:11) w05 7/1 p. 27 Good News for People of All Nations Confronted by God‟s Spirit 20. What lesson can we learn from the account of Saul‟s persecution of David? 20 This account of Saul and David contains a strengthening lesson: Persecutors of God‟s servants cannot succeed when opposed by God‟s spirit. (Psalm 46:11; 125:2) Jehovah purposed that David

would be king over Israel. No one could change that. For our day, Jehovah has determined that the “good news of the kingdom will be preached.” No one can stop that from taking place.—Acts 5:40, 42. (Psalm 46:11) Jehovah of armies is with us; The God of Jacob is a secure refuge for us. (Selah)

Chapter 48 (48:1,2) w12 8/15 pp. 12-13 Carry On as Kingdom Citizens! REQUIREMENTS FOR CITIZENSHIP 5. Why should we learn all we can about the history of Jehovah‟s organization? 5 Study history. A person desiring to become a citizen of a human government might have to learn something about that government‟s history. Likewise, those desiring to be Kingdom citizens do well to learn all they can about God‟s Kingdom. Consider the example set by the sons of Korah, who served in ancient Israel. They took great delight in Jerusalem and its place of worship and in recounting the city‟s history. It was not the stones and mortar that impressed them most but what the city and that place of worship represented. Jerusalem was “the town of the grand King,” Jehovah, for it was the center of pure worship. It was there that Jehovah‟s Law was taught. It was to the people ruled by the King of Jerusalem that Jehovah expressed his loving-kindness. (Read Psalm 48:1,2, 9, 12, 13.) Like them, do you have a desire to study and recount the history of the earthly part of Jehovah‟s organization? The more you learn about God‟s organization and how Jehovah supports his people, the more real God‟s Kingdom will be to you. Your desire to preach the good news of the Kingdom will naturally intensify.—Jer. 9:24; Luke 4:43. (Psalm 48:1,2) Jehovah is great and most worthy of praise In the city of our God, in his holy mountain. 2 Beautiful in its loftiness, the joy of the whole earth, Is Mount Zion in the far north, The city of the Grand King. (48:12-14) w15 7/15 p. 9 Work to Enhance the Spiritual Paradise JEHOVAH‟S ORGANIZATION IS BEING MADE MORE BEAUTIFUL 13. What obligation does Psalm 48:12-14 place on us? 13 Regardless of how long we have been in the truth, we must tell others about Jehovah‟s organization. The existence of a spiritual paradise in the midst of a wicked, corrupt, and loveless world is a modern-day miracle! The wonders about Jehovah‟s organization, or “Zion,” and the truth about the spiritual paradise must be joyfully passed on “to future generations.”—Read Psalm 48:12-14. (Psalm 48:12-14) March around Zion; go all around it; Count its towers. 13 Set your hearts upon its ramparts. Inspect its fortified towers, So that you may tell about it to future generations. 14 For this God is our God forever and ever. He will guide us forevermore. (48:14) w08 4/15 pp. 8-9

Seek God‟s Guidance in All Things When Do We Need Guidance? 6, 7. When do we need Jehovah‟s guidance? 6 Really, we need God‟s guidance throughout our lives, from youth to old age. The psalmist said: “This God is our God to time indefinite, even forever. He himself will guide us until we die.” (Ps. 48:14) Like the psalmist, wise Christians never cease to look to God for guidance. 7 There are, of course, times when we feel an especially urgent need for help. Sometimes we find ourselves in “sore straits,” perhaps facing persecution, a severe illness, or sudden unemployment. (Ps. 69:16, 17) At such times, it is comforting to turn to Jehovah, confident that he will strengthen us to endure and guide us to make good decisions. (Read Psalm 102:17.) However, we also need his help on other occasions. For example, when we set out to speak with our neighbors about the good news of the Kingdom, we need Jehovah‟s guidance if our witnessing is to be effective. And whenever we have a decision to make—be it about recreation, dress and grooming, association, employment, education, or anything else—we act wisely only if we follow Jehovah‟s guidelines. In truth, there is no end to the situations in which we need guidance. (Psalm 48:14) For this God is our God forever and ever. He will guide us forevermore. (48:14) w08 8/15 p. 21 Jehovah Tenderly Cares for His Elderly Servants Jehovah Really Cares 19. Why can faithful elderly Christians view the future with confidence? 19 Advancing age may change a Christian‟s activities somewhat, but time does not diminish Jehovah‟s love for his loyal older servants. On the contrary, all of these faithful Christians are precious in his eyes, and he will never leave them. (Ps. 37:28; Isa. 46:4) Jehovah will sustain and guide them throughout old age.—Ps. 48:14. (Psalm 48:14) For this God is our God forever and ever. He will guide us forevermore. (48:14) w08 3/15 p. 3 Be Yielding, Be Balanced Be Yielding, Be Balanced 1, 2. What do the Scriptures say about being yielding, and why is this fitting? JEHOVAH, our loving heavenly Father, is infinitely wise. As his creatures, we look to him for guidance in our lives. (Ps. 48:14) The Christian disciple James tells us that “the wisdom from above is first of all chaste, then peaceable, reasonable [“yielding,” ftn.], ready to obey, full of mercy and good fruits, not making partial distinctions, not hypocritical.”—Jas. 3:17. 2 “Let your reasonableness [“yielding(ness),” Kingdom Interlinear] become known to all men,” exhorts the apostle Paul.*The apostle Paul used a word that is difficult to render with a single English word. One reference work notes: “Involved is the willingness to yield one’s personal rights and to show consideration and gentleness to others.” So the word has the sense of being yielding and reasonable, not insisting on carrying out the letter of the law or demanding one’s rights. (Phil. 4:5) Christ Jesus is Lord and Head of the Christian congregation. (Eph. 5:23) How important it is for each of us to act in a reasonable way, yielding to Christ‟s direction and being yielding in our dealings with other humans! (Psalm 48:14) For this God is our God forever and ever. He will guide us forevermore. (48:14) w06 4/1 p. 25 „Go and Make Disciples, Baptizing Them‟ The Motivation Behind the Decision

18, 19. (a) What public statement do we make by means of our baptism? (b) What will be considered in the following article? 18 Without a doubt, baptism opens up the way to many blessings, but it is not a step to be taken lightly. (Luke 14:26-33) It expresses a resolve that takes priority over every other responsibility. (Luke 9:62) When we get baptized, we are really making the public statement: “This God is our God to time indefinite, even forever. He himself will guide us until we die.”—Psalm 48:14. 19 The following article will examine further questions that may arise in connection with water baptism. Might there be valid reasons for a person to hold back from getting baptized? Should age be a factor? How can all contribute to the dignity of the occasion of baptism? (Psalm 48:14) For this God is our God forever and ever. He will guide us forevermore. (48:14) w04 7/1 pp. 14-15 „Teach Them to Observe All the Things I Have Commanded You‟ “Teaching Them to Observe All the Things” 4. (a) What does it mean to observe a command? (b) Illustrate how we teach someone to observe Christ‟s commands. 4 To observe a command means to “conform one‟s action” to a command—to obey, or keep, it. How, then, do we teach someone to observe, or obey, the things that Christ commanded? Well, think of the way a driving instructor teaches his students to observe the traffic laws. The instructor may teach his students the rules of the road while in a classroom. However, to teach his students how to obey those rules, he has to guide the students as they actually drive in traffic and struggle to put into practice what they have learned. Likewise, when we study the Bible with people, we teach them Christ‟s commandments. However, we also need to guide the students as they endeavor to apply Christ‟s instructions in their daily lives and in the ministry. (John 14:15; 1 John 2:3) Thus, fully carrying out Christ‟s command to make disciples requires that we be both teachers and guides. In that way, we imitate the example set by Jesus and by Jehovah himself.—Psalm 48:14; Revelation 7:17. (Psalm 48:14) For this God is our God forever and ever. He will guide us forevermore. (48:14) w06 4/1 p. 27 Meeting the Requirements for Christian Baptism A Solemn Agreement 5, 6. (a) How did God‟s people in the past respond to Jehovah‟s love? (b) What close relationship with God can we enjoy once we are baptized? 5 After delivering the Israelites from Egypt, Jehovah offered to accept them as his “special property,” to love and protect them and to constitute them “a holy nation.” To receive such blessings, however, the people had to respond to God‟s love in a concrete way. This they did by agreeing to do „all that Jehovah had spoken‟ and entering into a covenant with him. (Exodus 19:4-9) In the first century, Jesus commanded his followers to make disciples of people of all nations, and those who embraced his teaching were baptized. A good relationship with God depended on faith in Jesus Christ followed by baptism.—Matthew 28:19, 20; Acts 2:38, 41. 6 These Scriptural accounts show that Jehovah blesses those who make and keep a solemn agreement to serve him. For Christians, dedication and baptism are necessary steps that lead to Jehovah‟s blessing. We are resolved to follow his ways and seek his guidance. (Psalm 48:14) Jehovah, in turn, figuratively grasps us by the hand and leads us in the way in which we should walk.—Psalm 73:23; Isaiah 30:21; 41:10, 13. (Psalm 48:14) For this God is our God forever and ever. He will guide us forevermore.

(48:14) w06 1/1 pp. 23-24 How Firm Is Your Trust in God? Cultivate the Right Viewpoint 16, 17. (a) Why is modesty important if we are to trust in Jehovah? (b) Why should we cultivate confidence in God‟s promises? 16 Modesty: The Bible says: “Trust in Jehovah with all your heart and do not lean upon your own understanding. In all your ways take notice of him, and he himself will make your paths straight. Do not become wise in your own eyes.” (Proverbs 3:5-7) Sometimes, a certain course might seem practical from a secular point of view. (Jeremiah 17:9) Still, a sincere Christian looks to Jehovah for guidance. (Psalm 48:14) „In all his ways‟—in congregation matters, education or secular work, relaxation, or anything else—he modestly seeks Jehovah‟s counsel.—Psalm 73:24. 17 Confidence in Jehovah‟s promises: Paul said: “He that approaches God must believe that he is and that he becomes the rewarder of those earnestly seeking him.” (Hebrews 11:6) If we doubt that Jehovah will fulfill his promises, it might seem logical to „use this world to the full.‟ (1 Corinthians 7:31) On the other hand, if our belief is strong, we will be determined to seek the Kingdom first. How can a strong belief be developed? By drawing close to Jehovah in constant, heartfelt prayer and through regular personal study. (Psalm 1:1-3; Philippians 4:6, 7; James 4:8) Like King David, we can pray: “In you I have put my trust, O Jehovah. I have said: „You are my God.‟ How abundant your goodness is!”—Psalm 31:14, 19. (Psalm 48:14) For this God is our God forever and ever. He will guide us forevermore.

Chapter 49 (49:3) w03 2/1 p. 9 “Remain in My Word” Heart Condition and Meaningful Reflection 7. What activity is closely associated with a good heart? 7 Note with what activity the Bible repeatedly associates a fine and good heart. “The heart of the righteous one meditates so as to answer.” (Proverbs 15:28) “Let the sayings of my mouth and the meditation of my heart become pleasurable before you, O Jehovah.” (Psalm 19:14) “The meditation of my heart will be of things of understanding.”—Psalm 49:3. (Psalm 49:3) My own mouth will speak wisdom, And the meditation of my heart will show understanding. (49:6) w07 8/1 pp. 24-25 “Guard Against Every Sort of Covetousness” A Life of Abundance 15. Why do many put their trust in material possessions? 15 Jesus‟ words point out how easy it is for people to have a warped or distorted view of life. Whether rich or poor, all humans are imperfect and have but one eventuality. Moses of old observed: “In themselves the days of our years are seventy years; and if because of special mightiness they are eighty years, yet their insistence is on trouble and hurtful things; for it must quickly pass by, and away we fly.” (Psalm 90:10; Job 14:1, 2; 1 Peter 1:24) For this reason, people who have not cultivated a good relationship with God often adopt the “let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we are to die” mentality, referred to by the apostle Paul. (1 Corinthians 15:32) Others, sensing that life is fleeting and uncertain, try to find security and permanence in material possessions. Perhaps they feel that having many physical, tangible material things will somehow make life more secure. Thus, they labor incessantly to amass wealth and possessions, mistakenly equating such things with security and happiness.—Psalm 49:6, 11, 12.

(Psalm 49:6) Those who are trusting in their wealth And who boast about their great riches, (49:6-9) w15 1/15 p. 14 Why We Observe the Lord‟s Evening Meal WHY WE COMMEMORATE JESUS‟ DEATH 4. Jesus‟ death made what possible for us? 4 As Adam‟s descendants, we inherited sin and death. (Rom. 5:12) No imperfect human can give God a ransom for his life or that of others. (Ps. 49:6-9) By his death, however, Jesus paid the only acceptable ransom price—his perfect body and shed blood. By presenting to God the value of the ransom, Jesus made it possible for us to be delivered from sin and death and to receive the gift of eternal life.—Rom. 6:23; 1 Cor. 15:21, 22. (Psalm 49:6-9) Those who are trusting in their wealth And who boast about their great riches,

7 None of them can ever redeem a brother Or give to God a ransom for him,

8 (The ransom price for their life is so precious That it is always beyond their reach);

9 That he should live forever and not see the pit. (49:6-9) w01 11/15 p. 11-12 Jehovah Shows Us How to Count Our Days Jehovah Is Always There for Us 10. How does God make man “go back to crushed matter”? 10 Man is mortal, and God makes him “go back to crushed matter.” That is, man returns “to dust,” as crushed, or pulverized, earth. In effect, Jehovah says: „Go back to the dust of the ground from which you were made.‟ (Genesis 2:7; 3:19) This applies to all—strong or weak, rich or poor—for no imperfect human „can by any means redeem even a brother, nor give to God a ransom for him, that he should live forever.‟ (Psalm 49:6-9) But how thankful we are that „God gave his only-begotten Son, so that everyone exercising faith in him might have everlasting life‟!—John 3:16; Romans 6:23. (Psalm 49:6-9) Those who are trusting in their wealth And who boast about their great riches,

7 None of them can ever redeem a brother Or give to God a ransom for him,

8 (The ransom price for their life is so precious That it is always beyond their reach);

9 That he should live forever and not see the pit. (49:7) w09 1/15 p. 27 Jehovah‟s Servant—“Pierced for Our Transgression” “Pierced for Our Transgression” 8, 9. (a) How was Jesus “pierced for our transgression”? (b) How did Peter confirm this? 8 Read Isaiah 53:6. Like lost sheep, sinful humans have wandered about, seeking deliverance from the sickness and death inherited from Adam. (1 Pet. 2:25) Being imperfect, not one of Adam‟s descendants could buy back what Adam had forfeited. (Ps. 49:7) In his great love, however, “Jehovah himself has caused the error of us all to meet up with that one,” his dear Son and chosen Servant. By consenting to be “pierced for our transgression” and “crushed for our errors,” Christ carried our sins upon the stake and died in our place. 9 The apostle Peter wrote: “To this course you were called, because even Christ suffered for you, leaving you a model for you to follow his steps closely. He himself bore our sins in his own body upon

the stake, in order that we might be done with sins and live to righteousness.” Then, quoting from Isaiah‟s prophecy, Peter added: “And „by his stripes you were healed.‟” (1 Pet. 2:21, 24; Isa. 53:5) This opened the way for sinners to become reconciled to God, as Peter further stated: “Christ died once for all time concerning sins, a righteous person for unrighteous ones, that he might lead you to God.”—1 Pet. 3:18. (Psalm 49:7) None of them can ever redeem a brother Or give to God a ransom for him, (49:7,8) w16 July pp. 24-25 Grateful Recipients of God‟s Undeserved Kindness UNDESERVED KINDNESS “EXPRESSED IN VARIOUS WAYS” 15. Thanks to God‟s undeserved kindness, what hope do we have? 15 Having the prospect of everlasting life. As sinners, on our own we would have no hope. (Read Psalm 49:7,8.) But Jehovah provides us with a wonderful hope. Jesus promised his followers: “This is the will of my Father, that everyone who recognizes the Son and exercises faith in him should have everlasting life.” (John 6:40) Yes, the hope of eternal life is a gift, a wonderful expression of God‟s undeserved kindness. Paul, who certainly appreciated that fact, said: “The undeserved kindness of God has been manifested, bringing salvation to all sorts of people.”—Titus 2:11. (Psalm 49:7,8) None of them can ever redeem a brother Or give to God a ransom for him,

8 (The ransom price for their life is so precious That it is always beyond their reach); (49:7-9) w15 6/15 p. 27 Live in Harmony With the Model Prayer—Part II “FORGIVE US OUR DEBTS” 10. On what basis can Jehovah forgive our sins, and how should we feel about that? 10 Our daily need for forgiveness highlights the only legal basis on which God can cancel our sins—Jesus‟ ransom sacrifice. Though this ransom was paid nearly 2,000 years ago, we should cherish it as if it were a gift given today. “The ransom price” for our lives “is so precious” that nothing any imperfect human could do for us would come near to paying it. (Read Psalm 49:7-9; 1 Peter 1:18, 19.) Indeed, we should never cease to thank Jehovah for this great gift. Also, the expression “our sins,” not “my sins,” should remind us that all in our family of worshippers need this merciful provision. Clearly, Jehovah wants us to be concerned not only about our own spiritual welfare but also about that of others, including those who might have sinned against us. Usually, such sins are minor and give us an opportunity to show that we truly love our brothers and are willing to forgive, as God has mercifully forgiven us.—Col. 3:13. (Psalm 49:7-9) None of them can ever redeem a brother Or give to God a ransom for him,

Why are evildoers likened to grass? 5 The psalmist answers: “For like grass they will speedily wither, and like green new grass they will fade away.” (Psalm 37:2) Green new grass may look pretty, but the blades soon shrivel and die. Likewise with evildoers. Their apparent prosperity is not permanent. When they die, their ill-gotten

gains help them no more. Justice finally catches up with everyone. “The wages sin pays is death,” wrote Paul. (Romans 6:23) Evildoers and all who are unrighteous will finally receive their “wages” and no more. What a profitless way of life!—Psalm 37:35, 36; 49:16, 17. (Psalm 49:16,17) Do not be afraid because a man becomes rich, Because the splendor of his house increases, 17 For when he dies he can take nothing with him; His splendor will not go down with him. (49:16,17) w00 2/1 pp. 16-17 Jehovah Will Not Delay The Second Woe 12. What is the second woe recorded by Habakkuk, and how can we be sure that dishonest riches will be of no avail? 12 The second woe, recorded at Habakkuk 2:9-11, falls on “the one that is making evil gain for his house, in order to set his nest on the height, so as to be delivered from the grasp of what is calamitous!” Dishonest gain will be of no avail, as the psalmist makes clear: “Do not be afraid because some man gains riches, because the glory of his house increases, for at his death he cannot take along anything at all; his glory will not go down along with him himself.” (Psalm 49:16, 17) Noteworthy, then, is Paul‟s wise advice: “Give orders to those who are rich in the present system of things not to be high-minded, and to rest their hope, not on uncertain riches, but on God, who furnishes us all things richly for our enjoyment.”—1 Timothy 6:17. (Psalm 49:16,17) Do not be afraid because a man becomes rich, Because the splendor of his house increases, 17 For when he dies he can take nothing with him; His splendor will not go down with him.

Chapter 50 (50:2) w06 6/1 pp. 8-9 Highlights From Book Two of Psalms JEHOVAH IS OUR “REFUGE AND STRENGTH” Scriptural Questions Answered: 50:2—Why is Jerusalem called “the perfection of prettiness”? This was not because of the city‟s appearance. Rather, it was because Jehovah used it and bestowed splendor upon it by making it the site for his temple and the capital of his anointed kings. (Psalm 50:2) Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth. (50:12) w02 12/15 p. 11 “Draw Close to God” Express Your Love for Jehovah 16. By giving to Jehovah, what can we never accomplish, yet what may we always succeed in doing? 16 Of course, expressing our love for Jehovah involves far more than refraining from what is bad. Love also moves us to do what is right. For instance, how do we respond to Jehovah‟s overwhelming generosity? James wrote: “Every good gift and every perfect present is from above, for it comes down from the Father of the celestial lights.” (James 1:17) Granted, when we give to Jehovah of our possessions, we do not enrich him. He already owns all the goods and resources there are. (Psalm 50:12) And when we give to Jehovah of our time and energy, we are not filling a need that he cannot otherwise meet. Even if we were to refuse to preach the good news of God‟s Kingdom, he could cause the stones to cry out! Why, then, give to Jehovah of our resources, time, and energy? Above all,

because we thereby express our love for him with our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength.—Mark 12:29, 30. (Psalm 50:12) If I were hungry, I would not tell you, For the productive land and everything in it is mine. (50:14) w04 7/1 pp. 9-10 „Go and Make Disciples‟ Convincing Reasons and Proper Motives 7, 8. (a) What are some Scriptural reasons for Kingdom preaching and disciple making? (b) What scripture especially motivates you to continue with the preaching work? (See also footnote.) 7 Because we recognize Christ‟s authority, we have a part in the Kingdom-preaching and disciple-making work. What other Scriptural reasons for doing that work can we share with those whom we wish to move to fine works? Consider the following observations made by several faithful Witnesses from different lands, and note how the cited scriptures support their comments. 8 Roy, baptized in 1951: “When I dedicated myself to Jehovah, I promised to serve him always. I want to keep my word.” (Psalm 50:14; Matthew 5:37) Heather, baptized in 1962: “When I think of all that Jehovah has done for me, I want to show him my gratitude by faithfully serving him.” (Psalm 9:1, 9-11; Colossians 3:15) Hannelore, baptized in 1954: “Each time we are in the ministry, we are supported by angels—what a privilege!” (Acts 10:30-33; Revelation 14:6, 7) Honor, baptized in 1969: “When Jehovah‟s time of judgment comes, I do not want anyone in my neighborhood to be able to charge Jehovah and his Witnesses with negligence and say, „I never received a warning!‟” (Ezekiel 2:5; 3:17-19; Romans 10:16, 18) Claudio, baptized in 1974: “When we are preaching, we are „under God‟s view‟ and „in company with Christ.‟ Imagine! While we are in the ministry, we enjoy the company of our best Friends.”—2 Corinthians 2:17.* Further reasons for preaching are found at Proverbs 10:5; Amos 3:8; Matthew 24:42; Mark 12:17; Romans 1:14, 15. (Psalm 50:14) Offer thanksgiving as your sacrifice to God, And pay your vows to the Most High; (50:14) w08 3/15 p. 8 Find Joy in Your Marriage Yielding to Jehovah‟s Direction 5. How do Jehovah and married Christians view marriage vows? 5 Marriage vows are sacred in God‟s eyes. In reference to the first marriage, God‟s own Son, Jesus, stated: “What God has yoked together let no man put apart.” (Matt. 19:6) The psalmist reminds us of the seriousness of vows: “Offer thanksgiving as your sacrifice to God, and pay to the Most High your vows.” (Ps. 50:14) Although great joy can lie ahead for a married couple, the vows exchanged on the wedding day are serious and bring responsibility.—Deut. 23:21. (Psalm 50:14) Offer thanksgiving as your sacrifice to God, And pay your vows to the Most High; (50:15) w06 12/15 pp. 22-23 Jehovah Gives “Holy Spirit to Those Asking Him” What Moves Us to Pray With Confidence? 12. How does the illustration of the father hearing his son‟s request highlight Jehovah‟s willingness to respond to our prayers? 12 With this example of a father responding to his son, Jesus reveals how Jehovah feels about those who turn to him in prayer. (Luke 10:22) First, note the contrast. Unlike the man in the first illustration who was reluctant to respond to a call for help, Jehovah is like a caring human parent, who is eager to respond to a request from his child. (Psalm 50:15) Jesus further reveals Jehovah‟s willing disposition

toward us by reasoning from the lesser to the greater. He says that if a human father, though “being wicked” because of inherited sinfulness, gives a good gift to his son, how much more so can we expect that our heavenly Father, being benevolent, will give holy spirit to his family of worshippers!—James 1:17. (Psalm 50:15) Call on me in the time of distress. I will rescue you, and you will glorify me.” (50:15) w04 8/15 p. 15 Hated Without Cause Bearing Up Under Reproach 14. How can fervent prayer strengthen us to remain faithful? 14 If „our disquieting thoughts become many inside of us,‟ we can turn to Jehovah in fervent prayer, and he will console and strengthen us. (Psalm 50:15; 94:19) He will give us the wisdom we need to cope with the trial and help us to keep in focus the great issue, Jehovah‟s sovereignty, that is behind the unjustified hatred brought against his servants. (James 1:5) Jehovah can also grant us “the peace of God that excels all thought.” (Philippians 4:6, 7) This God-given tranquillity enables us to remain calm and resolute in the face of extreme pressure, not yielding to doubt or fear. By means of his spirit, Jehovah can sustain us through whatever he permits to come upon us.—1 Corinthians 10:13. (Psalm 50:15) Call on me in the time of distress. I will rescue you, and you will glorify me.” (50:16) w06 1/15 pp. 22-23 Do Not Allow Place for the Devil Stand Firm Against the Chief Liar 10, 11. What must we do in order to stand firm against the chief liar, Satan? 10 The Devil is a liar. “When he speaks the lie,” said Jesus, “he speaks according to his own disposition, because he is a liar and the father of the lie.” (John 8:44) Satan lied to Eve, whereas Jesus came into the world to bear witness to the truth. (John 18:37) If we are to stand firm against the Devil as followers of Christ, we cannot resort to lies and deception. We must “speak truthfully.” (Zechariah 8:16; Ephesians 4:25) “Jehovah the God of truth” blesses only his truthful Witnesses. The wicked have no right to represent him.—Psalm 31:5; 50:16; Isaiah 43:10. 11 If we cherish our spiritual freedom from satanic lies, we will cling to Christianity, “the way of the truth.” (2 Peter 2:2; John 8:32) The whole body of Christian teachings constitutes “the truth of the good news.” (Galatians 2:5, 14) Our very salvation depends on our “walking in the truth”—adhering to it and standing firm against “the father of the lie.”—3 John 3, 4, 8. (Psalm 50:16) But God will say to the wicked: “What right do you have to relate my regulations Or to speak about my covenant? And you keep company with adulterers. 19 You use your mouth to spread what is bad, And deception is attached to your tongue. Rather than eagerly publicizing the faults of others, we should overlook them.—Colossians 3:13. (50:21) w10 10/15 pp. 3-4 “Who Has Come to Know the Mind of Jehovah?” Beware of a Wrong Tendency 4, 5. (a) What wrong tendency do we need to avoid? Explain. (b) The Israelites fell into what wrong way of thinking? 4 As we meditate on Jehovah‟s activities, we need to avoid the tendency to judge God by human standards. This tendency is alluded to in Jehovah‟s words as recorded at Psalm 50:21: “You imagined that I would positively become like you.” It is as one Bible scholar stated over 175 years ago: “Men are apt to judge of God by themselves, and to suppose him restricted by such laws as they deem proper for their own observance.” 5 We need to be careful not to shape our concept of Jehovah so as to conform it to our own standards and desires. Why is this important? Well, as we study the Scriptures, some of Jehovah‟s actions may seem to be not quite right from our limited, imperfect viewpoint. The ancient Israelites fell into that way of thinking and drew a wrong conclusion concerning Jehovah‟s dealings with them. Notice what Jehovah said to them: “You people will certainly say: „The way of Jehovah is not adjusted right.‟ Hear, please, O house of Israel. Is not my own way adjusted right? Are not the ways of you people not adjusted right?”—Ezek. 18:25. (Psalm 50:21) When you did these things, I remained silent, So you thought that I would be just like you. But now I will reprove you,

Chapter 51 (51:1-3) w11 10/15 p. 26 Trust in Jehovah, “the God of All Comfort” Examples of God-Given Comfort 14. Why did David need comfort, and to whom did he turn? 14 King David of ancient Israel is another example of an individual comforted by God. Inasmuch as Jehovah “sees what the heart is,” when he selected David to be a future king of Israel, he knew that David was sincere and devoted to true worship. (1 Sam. 16:7; 2 Sam. 5:10) Later, however, David committed adultery with Bath-sheba and tried to cover up the sin by having her husband killed. When David came to realize the enormity of his sin, he prayed to Jehovah: “According to the abundance of your mercies wipe out my transgressions. Thoroughly wash me from my error, and cleanse me even from my sin. For my transgressions I myself know, and my sin is in front of me constantly.” (Ps. 51:1-3) David was truly repentant, and Jehovah forgave him. However, David had to face the consequences of his wrongdoing. (2 Sam. 12:9-12) Nevertheless, Jehovah‟s mercy was a source of comfort to his humble servant.

How does Psalm 51 reveal David‟s inmost thoughts, and what does it teach us about Jehovah? 8 The words of a song that King David thereafter composed reveal his heartfelt remorse. Psalm 51 contains David‟s touching pleas to Jehovah and clearly shows that he did more than admit his errors. He also repented of his sins. David was primarily concerned about his relationship with God. “Against you, you alone, I have sinned,” he confessed. He pleaded with Jehovah: “Create in me even a pure heart, O God, and put within me a new spirit, a steadfast one. . . . Do restore to me the exultation of salvation by you, and may you support me even with a willing spirit.” (Ps. 51:1-4, 7-12) Are you as earnest and as open with Jehovah when you speak to him about your failings? 9 Jehovah did not eliminate the painful consequences of David‟s sins. Their effects were to continue with him for the rest of his life. However, in recognition of David‟s repentant spirit—he had “a heart broken and crushed”—Jehovah forgave him. (Read Psalm 32:5; Ps. 51:17) Almighty God understands the true attitude and motive behind sins. Rather than have the adulterers condemned to death by human judges according to the Mosaic Law, Jehovah mercifully intervened, dealing with David and Bath-sheba himself. (Lev. 20:10) God even made their son Solomon Israel‟s next king.—1 Chron. 22:9, 10. (Psalm 51:1-4) Show me favor, O God, according to your loyal love. Blot out my transgressions according to your great mercy.

2 Thoroughly wash me from my error, And cleanse me from my sin.

(51:1-4) w11 4/15 pp. 14-15 Make Decisions That Honor God Why Decisions Can Be Difficult to Make 7. King David‟s example can teach us what? 7 Will we always make the right decision? No. All of us make mistakes. (Rom. 3:23) King David, for example, was a wise and faithful man. Yet, he at times made poor decisions that caused suffering to himself and others. (2 Sam. 12:9-12) Nevertheless, David did not let his mistakes undermine his ability to make decisions that had God‟s favor. (1 Ki. 15:4, 5) We can be decisive despite past mistakes if, like David, we remember that Jehovah will overlook our errors and forgive our sins. He will continue to support those who love and obey him.—Ps. 51:1-4, 7-10. (Psalm 51:1-4) Show me favor, O God, according to your loyal love. (51:1-5) w10 8/15 p. 28 Who Can Deliver Those Crying for Help? Who Can Deliver Those Crying for Help? 1. In the case of David, what do we learn about God‟s mercy? HOW heartwarming are those words, apparently penned by King David of ancient Israel! Years before writing them, he experienced remorse after committing adultery with Bath-sheba. At that time, David begged God: “According to the abundance of your mercies wipe out my transgressions. . . . My sin is in front of me constantly. . . . Look! With error I was brought forth with birth pains, and in sin my mother conceived me.” (Ps. 51:1-5) Mercifully, Jehovah takes into account our inherited sinful condition. Enrich Your Prayers Through Bible Study Keep On Enriching Your Prayers 23, 24. (a) Cite other examples showing how Bible study can enrich your prayers. (b) What will you do to enrich your prayers? 23 Many other examples could be cited to show that Bible reading and study can enrich your prayers. Like Jonah, for instance, in prayer you can acknowledge that “salvation belongs to Jehovah.” (Jonah 2:1-10) If you are troubled over a serious sin and have sought help from the elders, the prayerful sentiments of David may help you to express your repentance during personal prayers. (Ps. 51:1-12) In certain prayers, you can praise Jehovah as Jeremiah did. (Jer. 32:16-19) If you are seeking a marriage mate, studying the prayer found in Ezra chapter 9, coupled with personal entreaty, can strengthen your determination to obey God by „marrying only in the Lord.‟—1 Cor. 7:39; Ezra 9:6, 10-15. 24 Keep on reading, studying, and searching the Bible. Look for points you can include in your prayers. You may be able to weave Scriptural thoughts into your supplications and prayers of thanks and praise. You are sure to draw ever closer to Jehovah God as you enrich your prayers through Bible study. (Psalm 51:1-12) Show me favor, O God, according to your loyal love. Blot out my transgressions according to your great mercy.

(51:1-12) w02 10/15 p. 14 Jehovah Cares for You Jehovah Seeks to Help Us 6. How is David‟s case both a comfort and a warning for us? 6 David was imperfect and sinned grievously. (2 Samuel 12:7-9) But he poured out his heart to Jehovah and drew near to him in fervent prayer. (Psalm 51:1-12, superscription) Jehovah heard his

prayer and forgave him, although David bore unpleasant consequences for his sin. (2 Samuel 12:10-14) This should be for us both a comfort and a warning. It is comforting to know that Jehovah is willing to forgive our sins if we are truly repentant, but it is sobering to realize that sins often bring dire consequences. (Galatians 6:7-9) If we want to draw close to Jehovah, we should stay as far away as possible from anything that displeases him.—Psalm 97:10. (51:3) w13 1/15 p. 22 Serving Without Regrets Serving Without Regrets 1-3. (a) What are regrets, and how may they affect us? (b) From Paul, what can we learn about serving God without regrets? A POET wrote: “Of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these: „It might have been!‟” The poet was J. G. Whittier, and he was referring to things that we regret, that we wish we could do over and do differently. “Regret” is mental sorrow, pain of mind, at something done or perhaps left undone, and it can mean “to weep again.” We all have done things we wish we could go back and do differently. What regrets do you have? 2 Some people have made grievous mistakes in their lives, even committing serious sins. Others have not done anything so bad, but they wonder whether some of their choices in life were really the best. Some people have been able to overcome the past and continue on with their lives. Others are continually plagued with “if onlys” about their past. (Ps. 51:3) Which are you? Do you wish that you could serve God without regrets—at least from this day forward? Is there a true-life example from whom we can learn to do that? There certainly is—the apostle Paul. 3 During his life, Paul made both terrible mistakes and wise choices. He felt deeply about the regrets

of his past, but he also learned to make a success of his life in faithful service to God. Let us see what his example can teach us about serving without regrets. (Psalm 51:3) For I am well-aware of my transgressions, And my sin is always before me. (51:3) w01 3/15 p. 17 Mind the Spirit and Live! “How I Do Love Your Law!” 11. How would you explain that Jehovah‟s law prohibiting fornication is a protection for us? 11 How can we develop deep respect and love for Jehovah‟s law? One way is by carefully examining its value. Consider God‟s law that limits sexual relations to marriage and forbids fornication and adultery. (Hebrews 13:4) Does obeying this law deprive us of anything good? Would a loving heavenly Father make a law that denies us something beneficial? Of course not! Look at what is happening in the lives of many who do not live in harmony with Jehovah‟s moral standards. Unwanted pregnancies often lead them to abortions or perhaps into premature and unhappy marriages. Many have to rear a child without a husband or a wife. Furthermore, those who practice fornication expose themselves to sexually transmitted diseases. (1 Corinthians 6:18) And if a servant of Jehovah commits fornication, the emotional effects can be devastating. Trying to suppress the naggings of a guilty conscience can cause sleepless nights and mental anguish. (Psalm 32:3, 4; 51:3) Is it not obvious, then, that Jehovah‟s law prohibiting fornication is designed to protect us? Yes, there is indeed great benefit in maintaining moral cleanness! (Psalm 51:3) For I am well-aware of my transgressions, And my sin is always before me. (51:3) w12 3/15 pp. 28-29 Do Not Look at “the Things Behind” PAST NEGATIVE EXPERIENCES 16. How may we be affected by past experiences? 16 Not all past experiences, though, may appear positive. Perhaps we are overwhelmed by thoughts of past sins or mistakes that we made. (Ps. 51:3) We might still feel the sting of strong counsel that we received. (Heb. 12:11) Injustices—real or perhaps perceived—may dominate our thinking. (Ps. 55:2) What can we do to make sure that we do not allow such experiences to make us focus on the things behind? Consider three examples. (Psalm 51:3) For I am well-aware of my transgressions, And my sin is always before me. (51:4) w16 February p. 27 Learn From Jehovah‟s Loyal Servants Learn From Jehovah‟s Loyal Servants 4. (a) How was David an example of loyalty to God? (b) What other examples will we consider? 4 David‟s refusal to harm King Saul showed that David was one of Jehovah‟s loyal servants. As a youth, David was moved to face the Philistine giant Goliath, who brazenly dared to “taunt the battle line of the living God”! (1 Sam. 17:23, 26, 48-51) When David became king and committed gross sins involving adultery and murder, he accepted reproof from the prophet Nathan and repented. (2 Sam. 12:1-5, 13) In his old age, David continued to demonstrate loyalty to God. For example, he made generous contributions toward the construction of Jehovah‟s temple. (1 Chron. 29:1-5) Yes, David made serious mistakes, but he was loyal to God. (Ps. 51:4, 10; 86:2) As we consider other accounts about David and his contemporaries, let us seek answers to these questions: What loyalties should take priority? What is bad in your eyes I have done. Therefore, you are righteous when you speak, You are right in your judgment. (51:4) w14 8/15 p. 25 Hear Jehovah‟s Voice Wherever You Are REMAIN CLOSELY ATTUNED TO JEHOVAH‟S VOICE 17. Why is it dangerous to rely on ourselves? 17 Consider King David of ancient Israel. As a young person, he was victorious over the Philistine giant Goliath. David became a soldier, a king, a protector, and a decision-maker for a nation. But when David relied on himself, his heart deceived him and he committed a serious sin with Bath-sheba, even arranging to have her husband, Uriah, killed. When disciplined, David humbly admitted his error and reestablished his relationship with Jehovah.—Ps. 51:4, 6, 10, 11. (Psalm 51:4) Against you—you above all—I have sinned; What is bad in your eyes I have done. Therefore, you are righteous when you speak, You are right in your judgment. (51:5) w01 3/15 p. 10 Gaining the Victory Over Human Weakness Gaining the Victory Over Human Weakness 2. (a) What does “the minding of the flesh” mean? (b) What conflict between “flesh” and “spirit” takes place within humans desiring to please God? 2 The Scriptures sometimes refer to the human body as “flesh.” (1 Kings 21:27) They also use “flesh” to represent man in his imperfect state as a sinful descendant of rebellious Adam. (Ephesians 2:3; Psalm 51:5; Romans 5:12) Our inheritance from him has produced „weakness of the flesh.‟ (Romans 6:19) And Paul warned: “The minding of the flesh means death.” (Romans 8:6) Such “minding of the flesh” means being controlled and motivated by the desires of the fallen flesh. (1 John 2:16) So if we are trying to please God, there is a constant conflict between our spirituality and our sinful nature that relentlessly exerts pressure upon us to carry out “the works of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:17-23; 1 Peter 2:11) After describing this painful clash within him, Paul exclaimed: “Miserable man that I am! Who will rescue me from the body undergoing this death?” (Romans 7:24) Was Paul a defenseless victim of temptation? The Bible answers with a resounding no! (Psalm 51:5) Look! I was born guilty of error, And my mother conceived me in sin. (51:5) w12 5/15 p. 24 Are You Reflecting the Glory of Jehovah? WE DESIRE TO REFLECT JEHOVAH‟S GLORY 4, 5. (a) Like Paul, what struggle do we have? (b) How has sin affected us? 4 As Jehovah‟s servants, we certainly want to honor and glorify our Creator in everything we do. All too often, however, what we desire to do is not what we do. Paul had to contend with that problem personally. (Read Romans 7:21-25.) Explaining why we have such a struggle, Paul wrote: “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Rom. 3:23) Yes, through inheritance from sinful Adam, mankind became subject to the harsh mastery of „King Sin.‟—Rom. 5:12; 6:12. 5 What is sin? It is anything contrary to Jehovah‟s personality, ways, standards, and will. Sin mars a person‟s relationship with God. Sin causes us to miss the mark, even as an archer can shoot an arrow but miss his target. We can sin intentionally or by mistake. (Num. 15:27-31) Sin is deeply ingrained in humans and creates a barrier between them and their Creator. (Ps. 51:5; Isa. 59:2; Col. 1:21) Thus, mankind in general is completely out of harmony with Jehovah and misses the priceless opportunity to

reflect God‟s glory. Unquestionably, sin is the worst disability afflicting humankind. (Psalm 51:5) Look! I was born guilty of error, And my mother conceived me in sin. (51:5) w13 9/15 p. 23 Make Personal Decisions Wisely THE SPIRIT OF A SOUND MIND 5. Why is it that by nature we do not have a perfectly sound mind? 5 We must admit that none of us are born with a perfectly sound mind. Why is that so? Because all of us are born in sin and imperfection and thus are far from being completely sound in body or mind. (Ps. 51:5; Rom. 3:23) In addition, many of us were once among those whose minds were “blinded” by Satan; we were once ignorant of Jehovah and his righteous standards. (2 Cor. 4:4; Titus 3:3) Hence, were we to base our decisions solely on what we feel is good and reasonable, we might be deceiving ourselves, no matter how much we ponder the decision before us.—Prov. 14:12. (Psalm 51:5) Look! I was born guilty of error, And my mother conceived me in sin. (51:5,7-10) w06 6/1 pp. 10-11 Highlights From Book Two of Psalms “TOWARD GOD WAIT SILENTLY, O MY SOUL” 51:5,7-10. If we have sinned, we can appeal to Jehovah for forgiveness on account of our inherited sinfulness. We should also pray to him to cleanse us, to restore us, to help us to remove sinful tendencies from our heart, and to give us a steadfast spirit. (Psalm 51:5,7-10) Look! I was born guilty of error, And my mother conceived me in sin. 7 Purify me from my sin with hyssop, so that I will be clean; Wash me, so that I will be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear sounds of joy and rejoicing, So that the bones you crushed will rejoice.

9 Turn your face away from my sins, And wipe away all my errors. 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, And put within me a new spirit, a steadfast one. (51:6) w15 6/15 p. 14 We Can Remain Chaste “DRAW CLOSE TO GOD” 4. Why is it important to draw close to Jehovah? 4 The Bible‟s direction to those who wish to “draw close to God” is: “Cleanse your hands, . . . and purify your hearts.” (Jas. 4:8) When we treasure our friendship with Jehovah, we strive to please him in every aspect of our life, including our thoughts. We desire to have “a pure heart” by focusing our minds on what is chaste, virtuous, and praiseworthy. (Ps. 24:3, 4; 51:6; Phil. 4:8) Granted, Jehovah makes allowances for our imperfect nature. He knows that we are prone to improper desires. But we recognize that it saddens him when we nurture wrong thoughts instead of doing all we can to reject them. (Gen. 6:5, 6) Reflecting on this fact makes us ever more determined to keep our thoughts chaste. (Psalm 51:6) Look! You find pleasure in truth in the inner person; Teach my innermost self true wisdom. (51:7) w13 8/15 p. 22

Consider and Encourage One Another „ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER‟ 15. What can we learn from Jehovah about encouraging the downhearted? 15 A discouraged person may not immediately feel better or respond quickly to the help we offer. We may need to keep on supporting him. Paul said: “Keep hold of the weak, be patient with everybody.” (1 Thess. 5:14, An American Translation) Rather than quickly giving up on the weak, let us “keep hold” of them, as it were, and continue supporting them. In the past, Jehovah dealt patiently with those of his servants who at times were discouraged. For instance, God was very gracious with Elijah, considering his feelings. Jehovah provided what the prophet needed to carry on in his service. (1 Ki. 19:1-18) Because David was genuinely repentant, Jehovah kindly forgave him. (Ps. 51:7, 17) God also helped the writer of Psalm 73, who almost gave up serving Him. (Ps. 73:13, 16, 17) Jehovah is gracious and kind to us, especially when we are downhearted and discouraged. (Ex. 34:6) His mercies are “new each morning,” and they “will certainly not come to an end.” (Lam. 3:22, 23) Jehovah expects us to follow his example and treat the depressed ones with tenderness. (Psalm 51:7) Purify me from my sin with hyssop, so that I will be clean; Wash me, so that I will be whiter than snow. (51:7) w06 8/1 pp. 24-25 Be Wise—Fear God! When Fear of God Lapsed 16. What consequences did David suffer for his wrongdoing? 16 David‟s liaison with Bath-sheba produced a son. Shortly afterward, Jehovah sent his prophet Nathan to expose David‟s sin. Brought to his senses, David recovered his fear of God and repented. He begged Jehovah not to cast him off or to remove His holy spirit from him. (Psalm 51:7, 11) Jehovah forgave David and lightened the punishment, but He did not shield David from all the bad consequences of his actions. David‟s son died, and heartache and tragedy beset his family from then on. What a price to pay for a lapse in the fear of God!—2 Samuel 12:10-14; 13:10-14; 15:14. (Psalm 51:7) Purify me from my sin with hyssop, so that I will be clean; Wash me, so that I will be whiter than snow. (51:10) w15 6/15 p. 14 We Can Remain Chaste “DRAW CLOSE TO GOD” 5, 6. How can prayer help us in our fight against immoral desires? 5 An important way to show our complete reliance on Jehovah is by making our fight against unclean thoughts a matter of prayer. When we draw close to Jehovah in prayer, he draws close to us. He generously gives us his holy spirit, thus strengthening our resolve to resist immoral thoughts and remain chaste. So let us make known to God our earnest wish to please him with the meditation of our heart. (Ps. 19:14) Do we humbly ask him to examine us in order to identify any “harmful way”—any improper desires or inclinations—that could lead us into sin? (Ps. 139:23, 24) Do we regularly petition him to help us maintain our integrity when we are faced with temptation?—Matt. 6:13. 6 Our upbringing or our past conduct may have developed in us a liking for practices that Jehovah condemns. Even then, he can help us to bring about necessary changes so that we can continue to serve him acceptably. King David recognized this. After he had committed adultery with Bath-sheba, David implored Jehovah: “Create in me a pure heart, . . . and put within me a new spirit, a steadfast one.” (Ps. 51:10, 12) Sinful conduct may strongly appeal to our fallen flesh, but Jehovah can stir within us a willing spirit, the desire to obey him. Even if wrong desires are deeply rooted and tend to crowd out our chaste thoughts, Jehovah can guide our steps so that we can obey his commandments and succeed in living by them. He can prevent anything harmful from dominating us.—Ps. 119:133. (Psalm 51:10) Create in me a pure heart, O God,

And put within me a new spirit, a steadfast one. (51:10) w06 9/15 p. 27 “Rejoice With the Wife of Your Youth” “See Life With the Wife Whom You Love” 10. How can husbands and wives solidify their relationship? 10 Rather than looking outside the marriage to satisfy their desires—whether for affection, for friendship, or for support during a challenging ordeal—husbands and wives should work to solidify a loving relationship with their mate. By all means, then, spend time together, and draw closer to each other. Reflect on what caused you to fall in love. Try to recapture the warmth you felt toward the person who became your spouse. Think of the good times you have enjoyed together. Pray to God about the matter. The psalmist David implored Jehovah: “Create in me even a pure heart, O God, and put within me a new spirit, a steadfast one.” (Psalm 51:10) Be determined to „see life with the wife whom you love all the days of your life that God has given you under the sun.‟—Ecclesiastes 9:9. (Psalm 51:10) Create in me a pure heart, O God, And put within me a new spirit, a steadfast one. (51:10) w06 9/15 p. 22 Show Love and Respect by Controlling Your Tongue Put Away „Malicious Bitterness, Anger, and Wrath‟ 12. To control the tongue, for what should we pray, and why? 12 More is involved in restraining the tongue than watching what we say. After all, our words are a product of the heart rather than of the mouth. Jesus said: “A good man brings forth good out of the good treasure of his heart, but a wicked man brings forth what is wicked out of his wicked treasure; for out of the heart‟s abundance his mouth speaks.” (Luke 6:45) Hence, to control your tongue, you may need to pray as did David: “Create in me even a pure heart, O God, and put within me a new spirit, a steadfast one.”—Psalm 51:10. (Psalm 51:10) Create in me a pure heart, O God, And put within me a new spirit, a steadfast one. (51:11) w04 4/1 p. 18 Rely on God‟s Spirit in Dealing With Life‟s Changes “Listen to Discipline” 13. How did David react to Jehovah‟s discipline? 13 To David‟s credit, he did not deny his guilt. He did not lash out against the prophet Nathan. He did not blame others or offer excuses for what he had done. Confronted with his sins, David accepted responsibility, saying: “I have sinned against Jehovah.” (2 Samuel 12:13) Psalm 51 shows the anguish of his guilt and the depth of his repentance. He pleaded with Jehovah: “Do not throw me away from before your face; and your holy spirit O do not take away from me.” He believed that Jehovah, in his mercy, would not despise “a heart broken and crushed” over sin. (Psalm 51:11, 17) David continued to rely on God‟s spirit. While Jehovah did not shield David from the bitter consequences of his sin, he forgave him. (Psalm 51:11) Do not cast me out from your presence; And do not take your holy spirit away from me. (51:11) w10 5/15 p. 29 Do Not Grieve Jehovah‟s Holy Spirit What Paul Meant 4. Why is it important to avoid grieving God‟s spirit? 4 Grieving the spirit can be the first step leading to the total loss of the influence of God‟s active force

in a Christian‟s life. That this is possible is evident from what David said after he had sinned in connection with Bath-sheba. David repentantly begged Jehovah: “Do not throw me away from before your face; and your holy spirit O do not take away from me.” (Ps. 51:11) Only those anointed ones who prove “faithful even to death” will receive the “crown” of immortal life in heaven. (Rev. 2:10; 1 Cor. 15:53) Christians with an earthly hope also need holy spirit if they are to maintain integrity to God and receive his gift of life on the basis of faith in Christ‟s ransom sacrifice. (John 3:36; Rom. 5:8; 6:23) Hence, all of us must guard against grieving Jehovah‟s holy spirit. (Psalm 51:11) Do not cast me out from your presence; And do not take your holy spirit away from me. (51:12) w14 12/15 p. 12 Do You “Grasp the Meaning”? THE SOWER WHO SLEEPS 6. What should we acknowledge with regard to spiritual growth? 6 What can we learn from this illustration? First of all, we have to admit that we have no control over the spiritual growth of a Bible student. Modesty on our part will help us to avoid the temptation to pressure or force a student to get baptized. We do all we can to assist and support the person, but we humbly admit that ultimately the decision to make a dedication belongs to that person. Dedication is something that must spring from a willing heart motivated by love for God. Anything less would not be acceptable to Jehovah.—Ps. 51:12; 54:6; 110:3. (Psalm 51:12) Restore to me the joy of your salvation; Stir within me a willingness to obey you. (51:12) w06 6/1 p. 9 Highlights From Book Two of Psalms “TOWARD GOD WAIT SILENTLY, O MY SOUL” Scriptural Questions Answered: 51:12—With whose “willing spirit” did David ask to be supported? This refers, neither to God‟s willingness to help David nor to Jehovah‟s holy spirit, but to David‟s own spirit—to his mental inclination. He is asking God to impart to him the desire to do what is right. (Psalm 51:12) Restore to me the joy of your salvation; Stir within me a willingness to obey you. (51:13) w00 11/1 p. 16 You Can Remain Morally Clean Enduring the Consequences of Sin 19. Being properly saddened by a wrong course may lead to what benefits? 19 Though saddened by a wrong course, the regret we feel can help us to „be on our guard that we do not turn again to what is hurtful.‟ (Job 36:21) Indeed, the bitter consequences of sin should deter us from repeating a wrong. Moreover, David used the sad experience gained from his sinful conduct to counsel others. He said: “I will teach transgressors your ways, that sinners themselves may turn right back to you.”—Psalm 51:13. (Psalm 51:13) I will teach transgressors your ways, So that sinners will return to you. 14 To understand how Jehovah‟s Witnesses have fulfilled Jesus‟ prophecy with regard to the scope of the preaching work, let us consider some facts. There are approximately 600,000 members of the clergy in the various denominations in the United States, where there are some 1,200,000 Witnesses of Jehovah. Worldwide, the Roman Catholic Church has a little over 400,000 priests. Now consider the number of Witnesses involved in the Bible-based Kingdom-preaching work. Worldwide, some eight million volunteer ministers preach to people in 240 lands. What an amazing work is being accomplished, all to Jehovah‟s praise and glory!—Ps. 34:1; 51:15. 15 As Jehovah‟s Witnesses, we desire to reach as many people as possible with the good news before the end comes. For this reason, we stand out as unique with regard to the work we do in translating and publishing Bible literature. Millions of books, magazines, tracts, and convention and Memorial invitations have been distributed free of charge. We have produced various publications in more than 700 languages. Over 200 million copies of the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures have been published in over 130 languages. Last year alone, we produced approximately 4.5 billion pieces of Bible literature. On our official website, information is available in more than 750 languages. What other group of ministers is doing a similar work? (Psalm 51:15) O Jehovah, open my lips, So that my mouth may declare your praise. (51:15) w15 12/15 p. 19 Use the Power of Your Tongue for Good WHEN TO SPEAK 5. How can we show appreciation for God‟s gift of speech? 5 On the other hand, the Bible also says that there is “a time to speak.” (Eccl. 3:7) If a friend gave you a beautiful present, you would probably not store it out of sight. Rather, you would show your appreciation by putting it to good use. We show our gratitude for Jehovah‟s gift of speech by using it wisely. That might include expressing our feelings, communicating our needs, sharing words of encouragement, and giving God praise. (Ps. 51:15) How can we determine the best “time to speak”? (Psalm 51:15) O Jehovah, open my lips, So that my mouth may declare your praise. (51:17) w16 July p. 24 Grateful Recipients of God‟s Undeserved Kindness UNDESERVED KINDNESS “EXPRESSED IN VARIOUS WAYS” 14. How does Jehovah‟s undeserved kindness benefit our hearts? 14 Receiving comfort for our hearts. A great blessing that comes to us through Jehovah‟s undeserved kindness is comfort for a distressed heart. (Ps. 51:17) To Christians in Thessalonica, who were experiencing persecution, Paul wrote: “May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and gave everlasting comfort and good hope by means of undeserved kindness, comfort your hearts and strengthen you.” (2 Thess. 2:16, 17, ftn.) How comforting it is to be aware of the loving care that we receive from Jehovah because of his generous kindness! (Psalm 51:17) (51:17) w14 6/15 p. 15 “You Must Love Jehovah Your God” HOW WE CAN SHOW OUR LOVE FOR GOD 15. How can study and application of God‟s Word help us? 15 Diligently study and apply God‟s Word. Doing so shows that we love Jehovah and truly want his word to be a „light for our path.‟ (Ps. 119:105) If we are experiencing distress, we can draw comfort from such loving assurances as these: “A heart broken and crushed, O God, you will not reject.” “Your loyal love, O Jehovah, kept supporting me. When anxieties overwhelmed me, you comforted and

soothed me.” (Ps. 51:17; 94:18, 19) Jehovah shows mercy to those who suffer, and Jesus similarly feels pity for people. (Isa. 49:13; Matt. 15:32) Bible study can make us so keenly aware of Jehovah‟s loving concern for us that we are inclined to respond with deep love for him. (Psalm 51:17) The sacrifices pleasing to God are a broken spirit; A heart broken and crushed, O God, you will not reject. (51:17) w14 11/15 p. 15 We Must Be Holy in All Our Conduct UPHOLD JEHOVAH‟S SOVEREIGNTY 10. What happened on one occasion when a brother compromised his neutrality? 10 We are also “no part of the world.” Therefore, we are neutral with regard to the world‟s wars and political affairs. (Read John 15:18-21; Isaiah 2:4.) Some who made a dedication to God have compromised their neutrality. Many of these individuals have repented and have regained their relationship with our merciful heavenly Father. (Ps. 51:17) A few did not repent. During World War II, for instance, officials gathered 160 of our unjustly incarcerated brothers under 45 years of age from all the prisons in Hungary and assembled them in one town. There they ordered them to take up military service. The faithful brothers remained firm in their refusal, but nine of the group took the military oath and accepted uniforms. Two years later, one who compromised found himself part of a firing squad assigned to execute the faithful Witnesses. His own fleshly brother was among them! As matters turned out, the threatened executions never took place. (Psalm 51:17) The sacrifices pleasing to God are a broken spirit; A heart broken and crushed, O God, you will not reject. (51:18) w06 6/1 pp. 10-11 Highlights From Book Two of Psalms “TOWARD GOD WAIT SILENTLY, O MY SOUL” 51:18. David‟s sins threatened the welfare of the entire nation. So he prayed for God‟s goodwill toward Zion. When we commit a serious sin, it often brings reproach on Jehovah‟s name and on the congregation. We need to pray to God to repair the harm we may have caused. (Psalm 51:18) In your goodwill do what is good for Zion; Build up the walls of Jerusalem.
