XXVI International Mineral Processing Congress (IMPC 2012)

September 23-28, 2012

Hotel Ashok, New Delhi, India

The XXVI International Mineral Processing Congress (IMPC 2012) was held in Hotel Ashok, New Delhi,

India during September 23-28, 2012. More than 1100 delegates from 42 countries participated in this

prestigious conference, held for the first time in India. IMPC 2012 was organized jointly by the Indian

Institute of Mineral Engineers (IIME) and the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) with support from the

Department of Science and Technology (DST), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and

the Ministries of Mines, Steel and Coal, Government of India. Several professional organizations from

around the world including the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), The Institute of

Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM),

The Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan (SCEJ), Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration, USA

(SME), The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), The Association of Powder

Process Industry and Engineering, Japan (APPIE), Beijing General Research Institute of Mining &

Metallurgy, China (BGRIMM), The Institution of Engineers, India, the Mining, Geological & Metallurgical

Institute of India (MGMI), and the Resources Processing Society of Japan (RPSJ), along with the IMPC

Council and the next hosts of the Congress, IMPC 2014, Chile, have contributed immensely for the

successful organization of the conference.

The Congress was supported generously by the mining and minerals industry, not only from India but

also from across the world. The main sponsors were Metso Minerals (India), Tata Steel (India) and Vale

Inaugural Function

The Congress was inaugurated at 9:30 AM on Monday September 24, 2012 by Professor Samir K.

Brahmachari, Director General, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and Secretary DSIR,

Government of India in the Convention Hall of Hotel Ashok. He was also the Chief Guest of the inaugural

function and emphasized the need for innovation in the utilization of minerals and metals. Earlier, Dr.

Pradip, President, IMPC 2012, Prof. BK Mishra, Chairman, Organizing Committee, IMPC 2012 and

Professor Cyril O’ Connor, Chairman, IMPC Council welcomed all the delegates to IMPC 2012. Mr.

Hemant Nerurkar, Managing Director, Tata Steel, President, Indian Institute of Metals and the Chairman,

Steering Committee, IMPC 2012 addressed the gathering. Professor R. Venugopal, President, Indian

Institute of Mineral Engineers (IIME) also spoke on this occasion. More than 1350 participants were

present during the inaugural session.

Subsequently, the Technical Exhibition, organized concurrently with IMPC 2012, was inaugurated by

Professor Brahmachari at 10:30 AM on the Front Lawns of Hotel Ashok.

Poster Sessions Two dedicated poster sessions were held on 25th and 26th September 2012 from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM. A total of 272 posters (154 posters plus 118 short-oral papers) were displayed and a number of delegates actively participated in these sessions and interacted with the authors.

IMPC Council Meeting A meeting of the IMPC Council was held on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at Hotel Ashok, New Delhi.

International Advisory Committee Meeting A meeting of the International Advisory Committee was held on Monday, September 24, 2012 at Hotel Ashok, New Delhi.

IMPC General Body Meeting The IMPC general body meeting was held on Wednesday September 26, 2012. Dr. Pradip, President, IMPC 2012 presented a brief report on the current Congress. Prof. Juan Yianatos, President, IMPC 2014 and Prof. James Finch, President, IMPC 2016 described the preparations for the next two Congresses to be held in Chile and Canada, respectively. Prof. Cyril O’Connor announced the names of the newly elected IMPC Council members and Prof. Eric Forssberg described the selection procedures followed for

Cultural Evening As part of the social programme, a cultural evening was held in the Convention Hall in Hotel Ashok on Tuesday September 25, 2012. The cultural programme consisted of an Odissi dance recital by Guru Durga Charan Ranbir followed by Dalkhai (Sambalpuri folk dance) by Guru Ashish Das (Nrutya Mandal).

Congress Banquet The Congress banquet was held on Thursday September 27, 2012 at the India Expo Center and Mart in Greater Noida, New Delhi. It was sponsored by Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. and more than 850 delegates participated in the banquet. Mr. K. Ananth Krishnan, Chief Technology Officer, Tata Consultancy Services welcomed all the guests and made a brief presentation on the Tata Group.

This was followed by the announcement and presentation of Young Author Awards by the Chairpersons of the Technical Committee (Prof. S. P. Mehrotra and Prof. S. Subramanian). Professor Cyril O’ Connor felicitated the award winners by presenting them a Scroll.

Visit to Taj Mahal, Agra Arrangements were made to organize one-day trips to Taj Mahal, Agra on all days, starting from Saturday Sept 22, 2012 to Sunday Sept 30, 2012, and a number of delegates took this opportunity to visit the “the epitome of love”.

Valedictory Function Professor BK Mishra, Chairman, Organizing Committee, IMPC 2012 and Professor Cyril O’ Connor, Chairman, IMPC Council welcomed all the delegates to the concluding session of the Congress. Dr. Pradip, President, IMPC 2012 presented a brief overview of the just concluded Congress, IMPC 2012 and thanked all the delegates and all the members of the various committees of IMPC 2012 for their help and support to make IMPC 2012 a success. He expressed his sincere gratitude to all the sponsors for their help and support, in particular the main sponsors of IMPC 2012, namely Metso, Tata Steel and Vale, for their generous support. Professor Juan Yianatos, President, IMPC 2014 then invited all the delegates to visit Santiago and participate in IMPC 2014 in Chile. The Congress concluded with a video inviting everybody to participate in IMPC 2014 to be held in Santiago, Chile in 2014.
