Oscar Stenbak and Shannon Tan come up tops

From the GM’s desk Dear Members,

The June school holidays are finally here. After weeks of gruelling examinations, which undoubtedly had both parents and students equally stressed, it’s time now to let go a little and relax. For those who have plans for a short family getaway, perhaps you would like to sign up for our 2D1N trip to Malacca, For the Durians. We promise you plenty of good local fun among friends and family, with hearty food to complement. Spaces are limited. So be quick to jump on the bandwagon! Simply refer to the advertisement on how to register. (See inside left of newsletter cover.)

Besides computer games, allow your young ones to develop a new hobby with our Start your First Plant programme on June 15. A simple but engaging horticultural session, Start your First Plant is a hands-on class that will teach your child how to grow their first plant by introducing them to the method of stem cutting. To register your children for the horticultural session, please refer to the advertisement. (See page 13 of the newsletter.)

Looking further ahead, Start your First Plant is just one of the upcoming green-conscious activities that the Club will be rolling out. This precedes our annual Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) event, the Earth Week exhibition that is taking place from July 18 to 31. Our purpose of running such activities is not only to bring the joy of discovering a new hobby to members but also to encourage members to cultivate a more eco-conscious mentality. Besides this, Management Committee and staff are also working hard to organise a big celebration to commemorate both Keppel Club’s 111th year and SG50, which is Singapore’s 50 years of nationhood. Members will be able to reminisce the good old days as it is going to be an event full of nostalgia. More information on this event will be released in the coming July issue of Keppel Links.

Before signing off, I would like to thank all members who have done their part, however small, to help us maintain our greens. Depending on our golf maintenance crew alone is insufficient in ensuring that our course is kept in its pristine condition at all times. That said, member golfers may have noticed an increase in the green speed on our course. We have done the best we can to provide better green speed for the enjoyment of our golfers after receiving feedback. However, do note that an overemphasis on green speed will cause stress on the greens, thus increasing the chance of worsening them towards an unplayable state. We hope to seek golfers’ patience and understanding in allowing our crew to focus on a sustainable method to ensure the dignity of our greens till the very last day.

Enjoy the issue.

Keppel Junior Golf Championship 2015 (KJGC) is the highlight of our golfing calendar for Keppel junior golfers and usually precedes the Singapore Junior Open, which is also held at Keppel. This year, KJGC was held over three days on April 19, May 2 and 3. The B Division with a handicap index of 16.1 - 24.4 was held over the latter two days.

In the A Division, Stenbak Dylander was leading the event with a combined gross score of 144 (73,71) after some fantastic shot-making. Chole Wong followed with six shots back (73,77) and Callista Chen a further shot back (74,77). On the final day, it was a nail-biting, keenly contested battle between Oscar’s shot-making and Chloe’s consistency. Oscar then eventually won by a single stroke at 224. Coming in third place was Nicole Mok with a three-day nett score of 218.

For B division, the event was handily won by our rising star, Shannon Tan (180), with second placing won by Zhan

Meet our top B Division players (from left) Jillian Kuk, who clinched third place. Shannon Tan took home the championship that afternoon with Zhan Wei Leong in second placing.

Wei Leong (211). Third was Jillian Kuk with a two-day nett score of 172.

A course was conducted by Mr K.P. Ling to help educate our juniors on the finer points of golf rules. There was marked improvement by the juniors in rules compliance and pace of play thereafter.

Participants and parents enjoyed a sumptuous lunch and prize presentation ceremony at Tee Top, where Vice-Captain Jamil Maksoem presented the prizes to our worthy winners.

Special thanks to Vice-Captain Jamil for giving away the prizes; to Mr K. P. Ling for conducting the golf rules workshop and to Izan for his great event, which was enjoyed by all.

It was evident from the high quality golf skills displayed during this year’s KJGC that the future of Keppel junior golf looks bright and augurs well.

The crisp, clean and proud Mt Fuji: A reflection of its people.

Japan: Land of the Traveller’s JoyJapan and its people never fail to amaze me.

Nothing seems to have changed with regard to the hygiene and cleanliness of the country and the courtesy and helpfulness of the people – not since my first visit to the country more than 40 years ago in 1972.

In a recent cruise to China, South Korea and Japan, which included several Japanese ports of call, I found the Japanese people as courteous as ever. They are ever so helpful (“hai, hai”) when approached for street directions or any kind of assistance.

A shopping experience illustrates the extra mile they are prepared to go to help someone in need.

In a convenience store in Kobe, I asked to buy razor blades. The sales staff, a middle-aged woman, who spoke only Japanese, led me to a row of facial products after some sign language from me. On the shelves were facial cleansers, face creams, powder and the like. I shook my head and after more gesticulations, she led me to another row of shelves. There were all kinds of shavers, but there were no razor blades. Then she led me out of the shop and pointed to a big store across the road. She smiled, bowed and muttered something, which I think was an apology for her inability to satisfy my shopping need!

Such courtesy and kindness greet you everywhere you go. Hotel staff stand in front of the entrance to greet you as your coach arrives. They are also there to send you off when you leave. And they wave till the coach is out of sight.

At the pedestrian crossing nobody crosses the road until the pedestrian light turns green. Even if there are no vehicles to the left or right of the road, nobody dashes across as long as the traffic light is red. Drivers wait patiently for pedestrians to cross the road. Can you imagine this ever happening in China, Vietnam, Thailand or Indonesia?

It is still common to see the local people holding on to rubbish till they find a bin or a public toilet to dispose of it.

Public toilets are a comfort and joy to visit. They are not wet, dirty or smelly. There is ample supply of toilet paper, hand soap, tissue paper, hand towels and even hand sanitizers in some toilets. And the electric hand-drying machines always work. Can public toilets in Singapore attain this level of cleanliness and service, I wonder.

The Japanese people maintain a very high standard of hygiene and public health. Those who cough wear masks so as not to infect others; those who don’t also wear them for protection. They do not spit on the road or in public places. And I had not seen a single cigarette butt on the streets of Naha (Okinawa), Kyoto, Kobe, Nagoya and Tokyo during this trip.

Japan, the Land of the Rising Sun, is also the Land of the Traveller’s Joy.

We invite members to share their anecdote by sending their stories to: The Editor, Keppel Links, 10 Bukit Chermin Road, Singapore 109918, or [email protected]

We have heard much about Vice-President Mr Eric Tan’s Pig’s Stomach Soup. From its aroma to flavour, we have heard nothing but praise. When we finally tasted the soup, only one word describes it – super! His family recipe definitely lives up to its reputation indeed.

Satisfaction guaranteed

Pig’s Stomach Soup

Ingredients: (Makes for a family of 4)2 pig’s stomachs

1 kg of pork bones

1 kg of big bones (or Kar Tang kut)

1 can of Narcissus button mushrooms

Method:

1. Cut the pig’s stomachs into two halves, turn them inside out and wash with salt until there is no more smell.

2. Rinse the pork bone and kar tang kut (Pork Knuckle Bone) with hot water to get rid of the blood stains before boiling them in water. Add some salt (optional).

3. Using a bigger pot, fill it to half full with water. This prevents the soup from boiling over while cooking.

4. Boil the soup with the pork bone and kar tang kut for at least an hour. Refrain from opening the cover during cooking. This will keep the steam within.

5. After an hour, add the pig stomachs and button mushrooms in to cook.

6. Cook the pig stomachs and button mushrooms for 45 minutes. The pig stomach should have a soft and nice texture.

7. Remove the pig stomachs and soak in water. Once cooled, cut into bite size slices.

Enjoy with a hot bowl of steam rice and chilli.

White pepper seeds, grounded to powder and added into the soup

(It is recommended to add a little at a time, depending on how peppery you like your soup)

Black pepper seeds, placed in a cloth pouch and soaked in the pot while cooking.

The perfect soup for warming our stomachs.

I love golf. Since the age of 14, I started picking up golf when I was working as a part-time caddy at Jurong Country Club besides attending school. When I turned 27 years old, I became an avid golfer and later joined Keppel Club as a member in 1991. The Club is like my second home, a place that I most enjoy, especially the golf course – my pride indeed! It is no surprise to me that I have become a familiar face after I started frequenting the Club to golf more regularly eight years ago. Most of the regular golfers are aware of my career as a licensed English and Japanese speaking tourist guide. I am also a proud parent of five lovely children. My eldest child is 23 years old and my youngest child is 16 years old.

In 2014, I decided to join the Green Committee and became a Team Captain of our league players. With full enthusiasm, I find myself channelling my energy into the things I love (besides my wife, Lily of course) and the golf course. Becoming Vice-Captain of Keppel Club, however, was something that came unexpectedly to me. Stepping into the role, it is my commitment now to look after members’ welfare and to take care of the golf course. Yet, more than that, I recognise its challenges. This is not a role to be taken lightly. What drove me to accept the position then? It’s my heart for the Keppel community and passion for the golf course.

The Vice-Captain’s Message J o i n i n g t h e r e s t o f t h e M anagement Committee members, I will work closely with them to ensure that members will continue to enjoy the pleasures of club life to the fullest. Surely, there are still improvements to be done. The challenge is made greater with the land lease expiring in 2021. Till then, my vision is to move forward with the best of the remaining years in Keppel Club whilst keeping the spirit alive beyond 2021 for all. I hope that you will give me your support as we strive as one to elevate Keppel Club’s lifestyle to an even greater height for all. Do exercise a little patience with me too as I do my best for all of you.

Here’s wishing all of you good health and stay cheerful in Keppel Club!

Annual Tennis Quadrangular 2015

Richer than victoryBy Raziman Rahman

This year’s Annual Tennis Quadrangular was hosted by Tanglin Club on April 25 and 26. Due to the absence of two clubs, Singapore Swimming Club was invited by the Organising Committee in their stead to make the tournament a triangular. Despite having one club short in attendance, nothing was held back in the organisation and running of the event.

On the first day, Keppel Club was up against a strong home team and narrowly lost out 4-3 in the games. However, all was not lost. Keppel triumphed in the Mixed Doubles and Men’s Doubles, which saw a pairing of Kamal Ehsan and Denise Seow (combined age of 88 years and above), an open pairing of Gabriel Chum and Chen Chee Yen, and a pairing of Paul Wong and Alex Chew (combined age of 40 years and above), respectively.

On the second day, we found ourselves pitted against Singapore Swimming Club. Undaunted by our competitors, our players overcame them with a 4-3 score along with victories from Ladies Double Open pairing of Ashley Yim and Elizabeth Lee and the Ladies Doubles 2 of Foo Pin and Goon Kid Meng (combined age of 45 years and above). The men fared well too as they took home the Men's Doubles Open and Over-40 years title this year. Representing the Club in

the courts were our Men's Doubles Open pairing of Gabriel Chum and Keith Yong as well as Paul Wong and Foo Tian Peng (combined age of 40 years and above). The combined team effort over the two-day competition secured Keppel Club in the runners-up position for the tournament.

Everyone was then treated to a sumptuous dinner by the host, and a boisterous prize presentation thereafter. This year, it was a home ground victory for Tanglin Club. We may have ceded the title of Overall Champion but there is still much to celebrate. Coming in runners-up position for the tournament took unrelenting team effort and persistent team spirit from each of our players – an experience that is much richer than victory alone.

That said, Keppel’s tennis team is far from beaten. Our players vowed to claim the title back next year. We wish them all the best and extend our thanks to all the players who represented our Club.

After a hearty round of competition, Team Tanglin and Team Keppel gathered for a quick photo.

Loop versus StraightBy Weber Oh

Ever wondered why certain tennis balls fly and land the way they do in the court? Ever wondered how and when to use your swings, as well as to what advantage they would serve to your game?

Most tennis players would have heard of the Loop Backswing and the Straight Backswing on the forehand and backhand ground strokes. Both are correct backswings but which is better? Here are some quick tips on the different types of backswings and to what effect they can be used:

Straight backswing

The disadvantages of the straight backswing lie in the directly proportional relation between power and movement. The straight backswing lacks fluidity, which will cut down the racquet head speed, thereby resulting in the loss of power. It generally dictates a closed stance which will force you to move your feet faster to get into position to hit correctly and recover back to the centre of the court.

The only advantage for the straight backswing is the short compact backswing. When you are playing a particularly hard hitter, there will be less time to prepare due to the oncoming speed. As the straight backswing takes a shorter time to get the racquet in the proper position, it will help in returning faster shots like a big first serve or an attacking shot.

Loop backswing

The loop backswing has been part of tennis for years. It is still the most popular in this modern Tennis era. Theadvantages of this swing are greater power, condensed footwork (open stance) and more control (Top-spin). Although the modern loop backswing can be used with an Eastern forehand grip, it is generally hit with the semi-western or western grips, which creates more spin and therefore, more control. The power is generated by a continual swing that can form more of an arc or a “C”. This in turn, can give you more racquet head speed. Should you be using the semi-western or western grips, more wrist snap will be needed to enhance the head speed at impact. The loop is hit more often in an open stance, so getting to the ball and recovery time are faster.

The only disadvantage might be errors from badly timed shots. Loop backswing produces more top-spin so it means that players tend to hit with a low to high forward swing. Timing is key when you are trying to hit a fast oncoming ball with a low to high swing and a big shoulder rotation.

So which is better

My suggestion is: Learn the loop backswing first and then learn to make your loop backswing smaller and smaller until it becomes a straight backswing. Play matches and use both when the oncoming shot dictates one or the other.

Preventable, beatable & treatable

Colorectal Cancer By Johari Salleh

On March 29, the gym organised a Health & Educational Talk on Colorectal Cancer. This is the second time that we have invited oncologist, Dr Johann Tang to deliver a talk on cancer. This year, colorectal cancer was the topic of choice as statistics have shown it to be the number two and three killer among men and women, respectively.

Speaking to a crowd of 30, Dr Tang promptly began the talk at 7.15pm. Listening with much enthusiasm, members picked up useful knowledge on how colorectal cancer can be treated and better yet, prevented. Much to the enjoyment of the audience, Dr Johann presented the seriousness of the issue with aplomb and ease, whilst putting into layman terms the various methods of treatment.

The talk ended at 8.45pm after a Question & Answer session with the participants. A plaque was presented by our newly appointed Vice-Captain, Mr Jamil Maksoem, to Dr Johann as a token of appreciation.

Thailand wins

Singapore Junior Golf Championship By Kuk Hun Yi (Green Committee member)

Keppel Club proudly hosted the recently concluded Singapore Junior Golf Championship (SJGC) for the 11th time.

Held between May 5 and 8, there was an international flavour to this competition. Fifty-nine participants from 12 different countries took part in this year's SJGC. Out of the 59, 27 were from Singapore and nine from Keppel.

There was strong representation from neighbouring countries like Thailand and Philippines, judging from their individual total score results. The eventual Overall Boy Champion, Expharit Wu (223) and Overall Girl Champion, Pimnipa Panthong (219) were both from Thailand. Congratulations to the winners!

From the 31 prizes at stake for this year's SJGC, 14 prize

recipients were from Singapore (45%), with 10 recipients from Keppel Juniors (32%). The most outstanding Singapore (and Keppel) Junior was Tommy Tan Xuan Hao (226) who was the Overall Boy Runner-Up, Overall Best Local Boy Performer and was the Overall Daily Best Gross for Days 1, 2 and 3 in the B Division. Callista Chen from Singapore and Keppel was the Overall Girl Runner-Up and Team Event 1st Runner-Up.

During this year's SJGC, the Keppel course was in tip-top condition with green speeds reaching up to 9.5. Every facet of participants’ golf skills was thus put to a fair test on the challenging course.

A big thank you to the Keppel management team for turning out another wonderful event and we are once again looking forward to the next SJGC in 2016!

Across both the Boys’ and Girls’ divisions, this year’s competition saw a gathering of some of the best players from Hong Kong, Thailand, the Philippines, China, the US, Malaysia and Singapore.

Keppel LinksJune 2015 13

Amongst the 27 representing our nation, are our very own junior golfers (from left) Oscar Stenbak Dylander, Nicole Mok, Naomi Wong, Andre Chong, Nicolas Mok, Jason Kuk, Chloe Wong, Justin Kuk and Benjamin Yap.

Keeping his play calm, cool and collected, our junior golfer, Tommy Tan vied for the championship over three gruelling days of competition. He may have missed the championship by a margin but Tommy did us proud!

Standing among the top three is Chen Chen, representing China.

Clinching Overall Girl Runner-Up and Team Event First Runner-Up is Keppel’s very own Callista Chen. Well done girl!

Keppel LinksJune 2015 13

Emerging Overall Girl Champion and Overall Boy Champion respectively, (from left) Pimnipa Panthong and Expharit Wu of Thailand flew the Thai flag high and did their homeland proud. Congratulations to the two junior golfers!
