We are calling it Living the Story, Sharing the Story. It is really an attempt to answer the basic question after last years journey, So what? Now what? Now that we have a sense of the Bible and its message we will spend the next several months (September 2017 through May 2018) looking at key aspects of the Story in order that we might live it and share it. Once again it will be a congregational project. Sunday school classes, worship, monthly activities, and more will focus on Living the Story, Sharing the Story. The difference is that this years journey is designed by the three pastors of the above named churches. We are designing all of the material but will use and recommend supplemental resources. ~ MINISTER’S MESSAGE ~

“Living the Story, Sharing the Story”

Beginning Sunday, September 10, Highland will continue The Story! Along with Fallston Presbyterian and Chestnut Grove Presbyterian our three churches will continue what we started last year with our journey through the Bible using The Story. We are calling it “Living the Story, Sharing the Story.” It is really an attempt to answer the basic question after last year’s journey, “So what? Now what?” Now that we have a sense of the Bible and its message we will spend the next several months (September 2017 through May 2018) looking at key aspects of the Story in order that we might live it and share it. Once again it will be a congregational project. Sunday school classes, worship, monthly activities, and more will focus on “Living the Story, Sharing the Story.” The difference is that this year’s journey is designed by the three pastors of the above named churches. We are designing all of the material but will use and recommend supplemental resources. Here is the overview of subjects that will constitute our mutual mission:

September The Gospel October Identity in Christ November Prayer December Incarnation January Hard Questions Feb.-Mar. Spiritual Practices Apr.-May Evangelism

The monthly activities will be comprised of luncheons after worship, a Concert of Prayer (all three congregations together), and we are working on a weekend retreat (all three congregations together as well).

We are beginning with The Gospel on this Sunday, so begin thinking about and possibly writing down what

the gospel means to you, and why you are a Christian. A luncheon will be held on Sunday, September 24, following worship in Netting Hall. Another exciting journey awaits Highland Presbyterian Church!

Fondly,

Pastor Ray

SEPTEMBER LIGHT

This "September" Highland Prayer Ministry message simply cannot be focused on the usual subjects like school beginnings, summer & vacations ending and autumn's arrival. I can't go down that traditional path this year with you. In fact, Proverbs 3:5-8 just came to me as I wrote the word "path." September, 2017 finds all Americans in an unsettled season, where restlessness pervades, and many are traveling on unrepaired path, where many serious and divisive issues are over-shadowing lives, not peace. And so, this space must be devoted to what we must do, as Christians, to build up, not tear down. We serve a God of unity (Eph. 4), Who wants us to increase our faith and be of one accord in His purposes. His Word teaches us about His desires - His divine plan. As believers, we simply cannot succumb to hate, anger, fear, and their dark fruits. This is simply not God's way for us to live, even though news is peppered with such topics. We are to know the "rest" of God in Hebrews 4. We are to "walk in the Light!" In fact, Philippians 4:4-9 gives us His wisdom regarding anxiety. We should be meditating it. I'm trying harder to... We must, for the sake of our individual life purposes, and our church vision, choose to keep our minds stayed on our ultimate leader Who is sovereign (over all) - Jesus Christ. Matthew 6:33 tells us to "seek first the Kingdom of God..." The Kingdom of God is not heaven! It is a heart condition that begins on earth, in us, when we sincerely give ourselves to Jesus as our Savior. When we do this fully, a relationship with Him, through the Holy Spirit, takes root and grows. This commitment we make is when the Kingdom of God begins in us on earth. Not after our body dies. Not by chance, this morning, in my devotions, as so often happens, a most appropriate scripture appeared from Hebrews 10:24-25 "Let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching." Unbelievable wisdom. So timely! Assembling means in church or Christian gatherings. Exhorting means encouraging. The Day is Christ's return. What a powerful example of the Word giving us just what we need for specific times. Please join us on Monday, September 11th at 7:00 PM for an Ecumenical Prayer Service at St. Mary of the Assumption in Pylesville. Let us come together as a community for this time of prayer for ALL those who have fallen in the line of duty and those who still serve us daily, risking their lives to protect ours. Lord God, help each of us, by Your Spirit, to focus on all the light that is of Your recommendation, and refuse to allow our health (3 John 2), and joy, to be harmed by ungodly thoughts. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen.

Blessings, in Him, Carolyn Patrinicola Highland Prayer Ministry

Saluting Jean F. Galbreath & Harford Co. Lyme Disease Support Group, Inc. The Lyme Disease Association, Inc. (LDA) would like to thank Mrs. Jean F. Galbreath, President of the all-volunteer Harford County Lyme Disease Support Group, Inc., for her dedication and hard work over the past two decades. The HCLDSG was organized by Jean in 1995 and incorporated in 1997. Over time the group has filled a void in education in the area of Harford County, Maryland, a state which ranks 8th in case numbers in the last official CDC reported numbers from 2015.

The Group hosted many activities over the 22 years to raise awareness and even funds for the Lyme Disease Association’s Lyme Aid 4 Kids fund for families who are financially unable to have their child diagnosed or begin treatment for Lyme disease. They set up tables with education materials and sold mums and home-made baked goods at local events to raise the funds.

I went to Maryland to testify against a dangerous bill for patient and physicians alike in the Maryland Senate in 2008. Jean and the group led the State effort to defeat the bill, which never made it out of the Senate Committee, fortunately for patients. It would have mandated that the Maryland Department of Health disseminate the latest consensus guidelines to physicians in Maryland—undoubtedly, the IDSA treatment Guidelines which do not recommend any long term antibiotic treatment or alternative treatments for Lyme disease. Click here for history of the bill's defeat - scroll to Maryland

Over time, the LDA has supplied the Group with its materials for free, the LymeR Primer, the ABCs of Lyme Disease, and Tick Identification Card, which they then handed out throughout the area at events, teaching people about Lyme disease symptoms and prevention practices. In 2015, the LDA awarded the Harford County group its Dr. Lis Heininger Memorial Education Grant to be used to support its educational programs. The grant is in memory of a late advocate and LDA Chapter Chair from Corning New York, Dr. Heininger, who devoted her life to raising Lyme awareness through tremendous physical hardship that plagued her before she succumbed to her illness. LDA awards the grant to those individuals/organizations who strive in extreme circumstances to help others avoid acquiring Lyme disease. Click here for more information about Dr. Heininger and the grant.

In the words of Jean upon receipt of the award, “We are excited to expand our advocating and educational role in the community and throughout Maryland.” Expand they did. An example of that expansion was a Touch A Truck program held in Street, Maryland, which drew over 1,000 people who were offered information on Lyme and tick-borne diseases by the support group members.

Over the years, I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet Jean at several Lyme events and her kindness, humanity, humility, and devotion to eradicating Lyme disease were readily apparent. I feel fortunate to know her and to have been inspired by what she has accomplished under difficult circumstances. We will continue cheering for Jean in the near future. Together, we have helped many people learn about this terrible disease and what it can do to bodies and minds. We have made some headway state by state with people like Jean leading the effort and being a beacon for all to see and follow. Thank you, Jean and Harford County Lyme Disease Support Group, Inc. Know that your work has not gone unnoticed and has touched many people’s lives. August 10, 2017 LDALyme Literacy Newsletter Blog, Patricia Smith
