Highland Park Middle School Band Program Join band at Highland Park Middle School for 2019-2020! Do I have to know how to read music? No! All 6th grade classes start from the very beginning, so we learn everything we need to know together. Is band expensive? No! There are several local music stores that have very reasonable rental programs and leasing options. There are also instruments available from the school; these are reserved for families who could not otherwise aord them, and are available at no cost. What are the outside-of-school commitments? We will have three evening concerts during the school year. There are no before- or after-school rehearsals for 6th grade students. The practice requirements for beginning band are also very modest; just a few minutes every other day. How do I choose an instrument? 6th grade students will have the opportunity to see, hear, and play every single instrument available in beginning band before you select one! We will have an instrument fair in the fall, where students and parents will get to tour the instruments and secure one for the school year. This is done on the first day of school. Can I be in AVID and still take band? Yes! At Highland Park, AVID does not take the place of your elective. We have many students who do both and are highly successful! Instruments available from Highland Park*:

Flutes Trumpets

Oboes Baritones

Clarinets Trombones

The Instrument Fair allows students the opportunity to see, hear, and "test-drive" each instrument. Professional musicians on every instrument will give short presentations, and then help coach students into producing a sound. All students are asked to select their desired instrument at this time, and Beacock Music Services will be on site with rental contracts. All rentals, purchases and school loans will be given out to students, in class, following the fair. These will be theirs to use (at school & at home) for the remainder of the school year.
