Situated on the River Taw, Barnstaple is the largest town in North Devon. As the social centre, there is plenty to do; whether it’s meeting friends for dinner and a night out, taking in a show at the Queen’s Theatre, or browsing the appealing mix of big brand shops and traditional family businesses along the High Street. You can join the Tarka Trail at Barnstaple and experience the journey taken by the otter that inspired Henry Williamson’s much-loved novel ‘Tarka the otter’. The Trail passes through the towns of Lynmouth, Braunton, Bideford, Torrington, okehampton and ilfracombe and parts of it coincide with the South West Coast Path, the Two Moors Way and the Dartmoor Way.

Exit M5 at Junction 27, take the A361 signposted Barnstaple/Tiverton. After approximately 35 miles arrive at Barnstaple. At the first roundabout take the 1st exit. At the second roundabout take the 2nd exit. At the third roundabout take the 2nd exit.
At the next roundabout (where you will see stone sculptures in the centre) take the 1st exit. you will now be on Sticklepath Hill. At the top of Sticklepath Hill, take the 1st exit off the roundabout onto old Torrington Road. Continue along old Torrington Road for approximately 1 mile and you will arrive at Highgrove.

take the B3233 passing over the long Bridge. at the first roundabout after the Bridge take the 3rd exit, continue along the B3233. At the next roundabout (where you will see stone sculptures in the centre) take the 2nd exit. you will now be on sticklepath hill. At the top of Sticklepath Hill, take the 1st exit off the roundabout onto old Torrington Road. Continue along old Torrington Road for approximately 1 mile and you will arrive at Highgrove.
