– Our aim when we changed supplier was to have tomorrow’s colocation, and for us that was a supplier able to offer a two center solution. We would then be able to close our own backup data center, which had high running costs, and put our internal IT resources into business development instead, says Leif Gustafsson, IT Manager at Midroc.

An incident also occurred at Midroc’s own data center when a black fiber cable was cut, making clear the need for a solution outside the company.

– Being involved in a major incident makes you aware of how sensitive the whole chain is. It is extremely important to have up-to-date procedures and monitoring on site.

Midroc surveyed the market and decided on SunGard, which was able to offer colocation in two data centers.

– Our system is monitored 24 hours a day and we have the security of knowing that we can always join forces with SunGard if anything was to happen. SunGard’s staff are clearly experts in the field, and they are really sensitive to our needs, says Leif Gustafsson.

On the question of whether more companies should invest in a two data center solution for colocation, Leif Gustafsson feels that it is a strategic issue:

– It depends on where you want to tie up capital and how you want to allocate your resources. At Midroc we have taken the decision that our IT personnel should work in close proximity to the core business, more as business developers, and find business opportunities based on an IT perspective.

The new data center accompanies the state-of-the-art data center that SunGard opened in 2009 in Sätra, south of Stockholm (DC2 Stockholm South). Large numbers of customers are requesting twin sites in two locations, preferably with access to a third disaster recovery site. Now it’s a reality. With market leading Coromatic as contractor, the data center DC3 Stockholm North in Sollentuna is in operation from February 1st, 2013.

South is highly appreciated by customers and is one of the most advanced, energy efficient data centers in Europe. In 2009 we were awarded "Sweden's greenest data center” in competition with more than 50 other data centers. We have utilized the knowledge and experience gained from DC2 Stockholm South in Sätra to design and operate our new data center DC3 Stockholm North in Sollentuna.

For regardless of which availability requirement applies for a specific activity, an alternative operating envi-ronment is almost always required in order to rapidly secure the IT opera-tion if an incident or a disaster was to happen.
