WHAT KIND OF COURSE CAN I TAKE?

ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION This is a level three course to prepare people to take the step up to higher education. This will be of particular interest to adults who are returning to education after a break and who may not currently meet the academic entry criteria for higher education programmes.

HIGHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATES AND DIPLOMAS These are work-related higher education courses which have more of a practical emphasis. The certificate (HNC) is at level four and roughly the equivalent to the first year of a degree and the diploma (HND) is at level five and similar to the second year of a degree. To complete a HNC takes one year studying full-time, and is usually followed by an additional year to 'Top Up' to a HND. The duration of HNCs and HNDs are therefore shown as 1 year each (studied full time) and 2 years each (studied part time) in this guide.

FOUNDATION DEGREES These are similar to degrees but involve more practical work and work experience. Foundation degree students often study subjects closely related to their current job, or one that they want to progress to.

TOP-UP DEGREES As the name suggests, this course allows you to ‘top up’ your foundation degree or higher national diploma to a full degree. They are the equivalent to the last year of a degree.

DEGREES The best-known and most common higher education qualification. Honours degrees include the awarding of classifications of honours such as first, upper and lower second and third class.

MASTERS A Masters degree is the most common post-graduate qualification which you can take after you have completed an honours degree or equivalent. It shows a high level of expertise in the studied field, and usually involves writing a thesis.

TEACHER TRAINING These popular courses provide higher education qualification routes which will enable you to apply for QTLS (qualified teacher learning and skills) status. We run courses for people who are already teaching and those who are not, and for people with and without degrees.

We operate like a teacher training college and excel in turning industry specialists into teachers. Unlike other providers, we can arrange work placements and provide mentor support.

At East Riding College, you can work towards a number of different types of higher education qualification. Some are part-time courses, some are full-time and some can be either. The qualifications outlined in this course guide fall into the types of qualification below.

MODES OF STUDY You can study part time or full time - but even then, 'full time' does not mean you'll be in College 5 days a week. Formal contact time and timetables differ from course to course, so you might find that your time in College is as little as 1 day or evening per week, although there will be self-study outside of lectures and workshops. Check the course web page for more details.

FURTHER EDUCATION AT LEVEL FOUR AND ABOVE Some courses in this guide are higher level (level four and above), but are not funded by the Office for Students and are therefore categorised as further education. These include very specialised professional qualifications like AAT courses.

FAQ

CAN I STUDY AROUND MY JOB? Yes you can. Some of our courses are designed for people to do alongside work and working may be an advantage. It may be worth discussing your choice of course with your employer, if it’s work related. Many of our learners have their course fees paid or are supported by their employer.

CAN I STUDY IF I RECEIVE BENEFITS? Possibly, on some courses. Please phone and ask to speak with a guidance officer for detailed advice before enrolling.

WHAT ABOUT LEARNING SUPPORT? Higher education students can access support for specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia, sensory impairment, dyspraxia and physical difficulties. This is funded through the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA).

This support is free for those who are eligible and could help students with things like study skills, proof reading, extended loans for library books, specific computer software or mobility support.

For further information please ask to speak to a guidance officer or disability adviser or visit www.gov.uk/student-finance for detailed information.

All higher education students can use our Success Centres, for support such as research skills, assignment planning and proof reading.

WHAT IF I HAVE ADDITIONAL NEEDS? We welcome students with disabilities, specific learning difficulties and medical conditions. Students with additional needs are considered for courses according to the same academic criteria as other candidates.

Our leafy Bridlington campus is a modern, purpose-built development on the outskirts of Bridlington's old town and just ten minutes walk from the fun and frolics of the town’s award-winning beaches.

We have continued to invest in the Bridlington campus since it was built in 2009, with the latest IT equipment, mechatronics labs and a floodlit, multi-use sports facility within the grounds as well as a teaching gym.

The campus is home to our Clinical Skills Centre where students practice their clinical skills on robotic Sim-patients in realistic hospital and healthcare settings.

CAFÉS AND RESTAURANTS Our Beverley and Bridlington campuses have refectories which serve a range of healthy and tasty food at reasonable prices. They’re relaxed and informal places where you can get your lunch and hang out with friends.

E-LEARNING CENTRES Our e-Learning Centres are home to a wide range of reference materials, course texts and online resources as well as DVDs and interactive CD-ROMs to support your studies. THE EAST RIDING COLLEGE EXPERIENCE

They’re also usually industry experts, who’ve been there and done it, so you can learn from the best and beat the rest!

Rather than sitting in large lecture theatres, your sessions will mostly take place in a classroom with a limited number of others on your course, giving you excellent access to your lecturer and allowing them to dedicate more of their time to you. You still get to work with course mates and learn from others in the class, so it’s the best of both worlds.

A lot of our courses are designed to give people the opportunity to work alongside their study, and provide modes of study to fit around busy lives and families. Our students especially like the flexibility and support they receive. The e-Learning centres have hundreds of resources just a click away, available 24/7 and accessible remotely. The learning resources staff are available to help you find what you need.

Our lecturers are friendly and knowledgeable and they’re dedicated to giving you the best possible higher education experience.

ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION

The aim of an access course is to enable mature learners to gain entry to higher education. Our Access to Higher Education Diploma course is an entry qualification to a range of undergraduate programmes and degrees at local and national universities.

The course has several pathways you can take, depending on the subject you plan to study at degree level, or the area of interest that you have in terms of your career. Each pathway prepares you for university-level study, covering key skills such as academic writing, research skills and referencing as well as exploring relevant units to the subject area.

The course is fast paced and will normally be timetabled for approximately 15 hours per week, for the full academic year.

Access students acquire the skills - and the confidence - to move successfully onto higher level study.

Vincent now studies history and politics at the University of York. He has already had the opportunity to work for an MP at Westminster and hopes to work there in the future.

“Whether you might have some confidence issues like I did, whether it's age or IT or being out of study ... I couldn't recommend it highly enough, really, its been great for me.”

ART, DESIGN & MEDIA

Lewis joined the College in 2009 from Northcott Special School, starting on a foundation programme before moving through the levels and joining the media department, where he has progressed from level one (pre-GCSE) to level 6 (honours degree). Lewis achieved this despite having autism, OCD, dyspraxia and dyslexia.

“I’m on the autistic spectrum and its evident there is a lack of opportunity out there for people like me and that's what the College and degree gave me - an opportunity, a chance to find my purpose. I would recommend it to everyone who’s looking to gain valuable qualifications, studying at this College was the best decision I made.”

Lewis Singleton Class of 2018 Graduated with a first class honours degree in BA Contemporary Media, Design & Production

Our art, design and media courses provide the opportunity to develop the professional, intellectual, creative and technical skills required to be a successful contemporary practitioner in the creative industries.

The courses allow you to hone a variety of techniques and develop a substantial portfolio of work.

They are flexible and allow you to explore and flourish in your chosen discipline and enter the creative industries as a professional practitioner.

On the BA (Hons) Contemporary Media, Design and Production you will work on live projects, benefit from extra-curricular visits and an increased proportion of practice-based content and assessments.

COMPUTING

Vikki Scruton and Lincoln O'ConnellCurrently studying Foundation Degree in Computing

The UK’s ‘digital ecosystem’ is thriving and plays an integral part in business and industry in the digital age. Technology moves fast and coding skills are still one of the most important job skills for the future.

Our computing degree is designed to prepare students for both employment in the IT sector and further study. Unlike purely academic studies, our foundation degree gives you employability skills and includes a work placement in both years of the course.

It covers key skills for today’s industry such as user interface design and comparative programming paradigms.

Beverley students Vikki Scruton and Lincoln O’Connell landed coveted higher apprenticeship jobs at BAE Systems, a world-leading defence, security and aerospace multinational. As part of their apprenticeship scheme they will be completing the Foundation Degree in Computing.Software development is crucial to the company’s current and future products and Lincoln and Vikki will develop their software skills and knowledge working on anything from the Hawk advanced jet trainer, to the state-of-the-art Eurofighter Typhoon.

Jon Milner, Senior Software Engineer at BAE Systems said: “The foundation degree provides a good underpinning for our apprentices... The educational foundation is also helping the apprentices to develop into fully qualified and highly valued members of the team here at Brough.”

CONSTRUCTION

“I work in the industry at Spencer Group in Hull, so I just wanted to get a qualification that backs up and supports my job. The HNC gives you a broad insight into all different areas of construction and a lot of knowledge about everything. I would recommend it to women in particular, I was really pleased to see two other women on the course with me, it wasn’t all men.”

“I work at East Riding Council in construction procurement so for me it was more about finding out about the actual construction, once I’ve finished my job. It’s already helped me get a promotion. I would definitely recommend to others as once you’ve got the qualification, it’s in your pocket, and gives you opportunities to apply for the higher level roles.”

Lisa Cunningham Class of 2018 HNC in Construction

Steph Harris Class of 2018 HNC in Construction

Higher National qualifications are highly regarded in the construction industry and are for those who wish to develop their career beyond hands-on practical work and move into management or technician roles.

Useful across the built environment and construction sector, these courses develop the higher level design and management skills needed for roles in architectural technology, quantity surveying, estimating, building surveying and construction management. An ever-growing industry in need of skilled technicians and managers, construction offers lucrative and rewarding careers to those who can meet this demand.

“The course helped me in so many ways. Not only did it extend my knowledge in child development, it also gave me so much more confidence in myself and my academic abilities. The knowledge I have gained continues to help me within my role as an early years practitioner.”

Debbie Sturdy Class of 2018 BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Policy and Practice

Our early childhood degree courses are designed to support the development of practitioners who wish to work or who already work with children and families.

There is increasing demand for those with specialist knowledge in areas such as child development, special educational needs and well-being and resilience. Our courses are designed to provide deeper understanding and give students access to career development opportunities, such as progression to teacher status or senior roles within childcare settings.

Our Level Four Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling is a professional qualification for those who wish to be recognised and practice as a professional counsellor. The course involves 100 hours of supervised placement.

“At the start of the course I classed myself as ‘just a childminder’ and felt inadequate... during the degree my confidence has grown, and I now offer bespoke training, run workshops at conferences and represent child minders at meetings across the county.”

Suzanne ThompsonClass of 2018 BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Policy and Practice

ENGINEERING

“Sometimes people are really surprised you’re a woman studying or working in engineering, people have joked about my choosing engineering as a woman and I can imagine it might put some girls off when choosing their options. I don’t think it’s really an issue to be a woman in engineering these days, though, or that you have to act or be a certain way.

I’ve found I really like teaching - I'm a trainee tutor at the moment. I teach the level 4 engineers the maths they need for their course, which includes algebra, trigonometry and calculus. I find it comes naturally to me, calculus is my favourite. Because I have done the HNC in Engineering myself I can put the maths into context. We tend to use real life scenarios and they have to figure out what maths they need.”

Jess StorkClass of 2018 HNC in Engineering

The level of demand for qualified engineers is staggering. Our engineering courses are designed to meet this growing demand in industry for engineers qualified to level four in particular.

The courses provide higher-level technical skills and focus on providing students with the opportunity to develop a modern skill set relevant to today’s industry. The HNC focuses on design, manufacture and maintenance, as well as developing broader communication and employability skills that will allow you to progress in your career, to technical or management roles.

MANAGEMENT

“The prospect of the extra study was daunting at first. I was concerned about being able to complete the course on top of my full time job as Regional Manager with Parkinson’s UK. Once I met my tutor my fears were allayed, the evidence required all related to my role and experience. I used my 1-2-1 sessions to set targets and completed the course ahead of the allowed time.

Since then I haven’t looked back, I am now Area Development Manager. The course gave me the tools to analyse my work practise and was really helpful when our charity was going through a period of strategic change. The new found skills I had learnt helped me lead my team through that. The ILM Level 5 will stand me in good stead for my future career. It is a recognised qualification that affirms all of your experience. I saw it as an investment in my future.”

Tracy Westgarth Class of 2017 ILM Level Five NVQ Diploma in Management and Leadership

Higher level management courses allow you to progress in your career, prepare you for operational and strategic management roles and give you a broad overview of business.

Prepare yourself for future leadership roles and develop the transferable skills organisations want to stay successful, whether in the corporate world or public/third sector. Most management degrees have a practical approach, and ours are no exception.

Our foundation degrees were developed with the help of employers to make sure that graduates leave us with skills that make them extremely employable.

Our Foundation Degree in Public Service Management is designed for those wishing to move into management roles or graduate programmes within the public sector. It complements career paths into local government, emergency support services and healthcare administration whilst also providing a solid grounding in areas of management. We also offer full progression to Honours Degree with our Level 6 Top Up programme.

SOCIAL SCIENCE

“The degree course has been really good. The College has been fabulous, I couldn’t imagine studying anywhere else.

Having the route all the way from level two through to access and degree level is excellent. I’ve had all the help I could have wished for, I’ve felt very supported.

It has changed my life and I would recommend it to mature students in particular.”

Bernie Hilton3rd Year Student BA (Hons) Social Science

Social Science is the scientific study of human interaction, society, culture and change.

Scientific disciplines such as psychology, sociology and criminology are used to examine social identity, social control, globalisation and crime prevention.

Social scientists go on to work in areas such as social and community services, human resources, education and the police, and help make the world safer and healthier. The work of social scientists influences our everyday lives and the future of our society, from crime to public health, education or economics.

SPORT

Both Callum and Alex received first class honours in their BSc Sports Coaching and Health Sciences degrees.

Alex Davies

“I’m pleased with my result after all the hard work. I took up the foundation degree initially, to improve my career prospects, but I feel like I’ve learned so much more along the way.”

Callum Ewing

“I’d recommend the route we took to anyone who thinks they may have left it too late to do a degree. We managed to work, study and get the best result possible. I don’t know whether I could have done that at 18!”

Callum Ewing and Alex DaviesClass of 2017 BSc Sports Coaching and Health Sciences (Top Up)

A degree in sport is a great basis on which to build a career in the sports industry.

Jobs in sport that employ graduates are highly sought-after and like professional sport, the sports industry is very competitive.

The advantage of a foundation degree is that it is developed in line with the industry’s needs and is more practical in nature.

Our degree programme gives you a good grounding in a wide spectrum of disciplines within sport, covering anatomy, psychology, coaching and injury treatment as well as fitness training and nutrition.

Successful students have progressed to a range of further study and careers.

TEACHER TRAINING AND EDUCATION

“East Riding College was very welcoming. My tutors made me feel wanted and at ease. They understood that I was away from home and didn’t know much about the area and they helped me get a placement.

The course has improved my teaching practice and built my confidence as a teacher. I would recommend the College to anyone considering a PGCE, as there is always help at hand. I can safely say it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.”

Sean O’CallaghanClass of 2017 Pre-Service Professional Graduate Certificate in Education
