INTRODUCTIONOxford University Press (OUP) is a department of the University of Oxford. It furthers the University’s objective of excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide.

This catalogue features higher education books for students and faculty in Pakistan. Higher Education is an important area of publishing for OUP, with flourishing lists in the UK, USA and many other international branches. OUP Pakistan has launched its local Higher Education publishing programme for both public and private sector universities and their affiliated colleges. The main thrust of this programme will be to produce locally relevant core texts for higher education students in Pakistan.

In addition to local books, OUP Pakistan also publishes licensed reprints of books published by other branches of OUP and by publishers worldwide. We also import select titles, which in our opinion have high pedagogical value for their respective fields, from other branches of OUP.

OUP Pakistan offers attractive discounts for students on those books that are adopted as core texts in higher education courses. Our goal is to introduce and promote higher education books in Pakistan that are locally relevant, pedagogically rich, student-friendly, and financially affordable.

SOCIAL AND CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGYJohn Monaghan and Peter Just This book combines an accessible account of some of the discipline’s guiding principles and methodology with abundant examples and illustrations of anthropologists at work. It begins by discussing anthropology’s most important contributions to modern thought: its investigation of culture as a distinctively human characteristic, its doctrine of cultural relativism, and its methodology of fieldwork and ethnography. It then examines specific ways in which social and cultural anthropology have advanced our understanding of human society and culture. The book ends with an assessment of anthropology’s present position, and a look forward to its likely future.

John Monaghan is Associate Professor of Anthropology at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee.

Peter Just is Associate Professor of Anthropology at Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts.

OF BRICK AND MYTHTHE GENESIS OF ISLAMIC ARCHITECTURE IN THE INDUS VALLEY

Holly EdwardsThis book traces the genesis of commemorative architecture in the Indus Valley from the eighth to the fourteenth centuries. Culminating in the justly famed tomb of Rukn-al-Din Rukn-i-Alam in Multan, this distinctive and localized tradition partakes of deeply-rooted craft traditions, even as it reflects vernacular forms of spirituality which continue today. What distinguishes this study from others is its format—historical chapters are supplemented with a catalogue of individual monuments, thus providing the reader with multiple ways to engage with an important building tradition.

Holly Edwards is an historian of Islamic art and visual culture, specializing in Central and South Asia. She is currently Senior Lecturer at Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts, USA.

MAKING LAHORE MODERNCONSTRUCTING AND IMAGINING A COLONIAL CITY

William J. GloverFifty years after the British annexed the Punjab and made Lahore its provincial capital, the city was transformed. British and Indian officials had designed a modern, architecturally distinct city center adjacent to the old walled city, administered under new methods of urban governance. In this book, the author investigates the traditions that shaped colonial Lahore. In particular, he focuses on the conviction that both British and Indian actors who implemented urbanization came to share: that the material fabric of the city could lead to social and moral improvement.

William J. Glover is currently Associate Professor of Architecture as well as Associate Director of the International Institute at the University of Michigan, USA.

THE RELUCTANT FUNDAMENTALISTMohsin Hamid At a cafe table in Lahore’s Food Street, a bearded Pakistani man converses with a mysterious American stranger. As dusk deepens into night, the young Pakistani begins the tale that has brought both of them to this fateful chance encounter. Encapsulated within the form of a remarkable dramatic monologue, the story of Changez, who graduates from Princeton University and joins a top New York consultancy firm, unfolds. We learn how, following the 9/11 attacks, he experiences discrimination, which sets off his journey of alienation—his inner struggle, the change of his relationships with others, and the transformation of his personality.

Mohsin Hamid contributes articles in international newspapers and journals. His other books are Moth Smoke and How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia.

THE MURDER OF AZIZ KHANZulfikar GhoseFirst published in 1967, The Murder of Aziz Khan has acquired an important place in the history of English language Pakistani literature. It presents a picture of Pakistani society in its earliest years in the persons of Aziz Khan, who represents ancient and traditional values, and the Shah brothers, who are out to exploit the resources and the people of the new country for their personal gain. The story is built around this central conflict. Intricately plotted, the story reveals the emotions of its characters; it exposes the ruthless brutality of the Shah brothers and the effects of moral corruption on them; and finally, in brilliant prose imbued with an astonishing poetic intensity, the book describes the suffering of Aziz Khan with such poignancy that it seems a symbolic vision of a wound in the heart of the new nation.

A HISTORY OF PAKISTANI LITERATURE IN ENGLISHTariq RahmanThis is the first history of literature written by Pakistanis, including those Indian Muslims who either migrated to Pakistan or whose work is highly relevant to the themes which engaged the writers of the new country in the years before Partition and immediately afterwards. It contains a historical account of the novels, drama, belles letters and especially of poetry written from the late 1940s till 1990 when the book was first published. It also contains a bibliography of these writings which is important as some of this material is untraceable. Although there has been a lot of significant addition to the genres covered in this history since 1990 and it has also been competently evaluated by literary critics, there is no comparable historical account of Pakistani literature in English from that date till now. This book covers the course of post-colonial literature in Pakistan, and the new course on Pakistani Literature in English that has been added by some universities.

LITERARY THEORYJonathan CullerOften a controversial subject, said to have transformed the study of culture and society in the past two decades, literary theory is accused of undermining respect for tradition and truth and encouraging suspicion about the political and psychological implications of cultural projects rather than admiration for great literature.

Here, Jonathan Culler explains ‘theory’, not by describing warring ‘schools’ but by sketching key ‘moves’ theory has encouraged, and speaking directly about the implications of theory for thinking about literature, human identity, and the power of language. In this new edition Culler takes a look at new material, including the ‘death of theory’, the links between the theory of narrative and cognitive science, trauma theory, ecocriticism, and includes a new chapter on ‘Ethics and aesthetics’.

Jonathan Culler is Class of 1916 Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Cornell University.

HISTORY AND PAkISTAN STUDIES

HISTORYJohn Arnold There are many stories we can tell about the past, and we are not, perhaps, as free as we might imagine in our choice of which stories to tell, or where those stories end. This book is a stimulating essay about how we study and understand history. It begins by inviting us to think about various questions provoked by our investigation of history, and explores the ways these questions have been answered in the past. Concepts such as causation, interpretation, and periodization, are introduced by means of concrete examples of how historians work, giving the reader a sense of the excitement of discovering not only the past, but also ourselves.

John Arnold is Professor of History at School of History, Classics and Archaeology, Birkbeck, University of London.

PRECEDENT IN PAKISTANI LAWMuhammad MunirIn the Common Law system, it is the doctrine of ‘precedent’ which courts depend upon, more than any other legal doctrine, while arriving at their decisions. The elements that constitute the doctrine of precedent are numerous and complex. Despite its considerable importance in the Pakistani legal system, the operation of this doctrine has so far drawn little academic attention. This work bridges that gap. It thoroughly examines the history, origin, and context of this doctrine, as well as the rules which guide its operation in Pakistan in the Supreme Court, the High Courts, the Federal Shariat Court, and various tribunals, with examples and analysis of case law.

Dr Muhammad Munir is Associate Professor at the Department of Law, International Islamic University, Islamabad.

PHILOSOPHY

LOGICGraham Priest

Logic is often perceived as having little to do with the rest of philosophy, and even less to do with real life. In this lively and accessible introduction, Graham Priest shows how wrong this conception is. He explores the philosophical roots of the subject, explaining how modern formal logic deals with issues ranging from the existence of God and the reality of time to paradoxes of probability and decision theory. Along the way, the basics of formal logic are explained in simple, non-technical terms, showing that logic is a powerful and exciting part of modern philosophy.

Graham Priest is Professor of Philosophy at University of Queensland.

PHILOSOPHYEdward Craig

How ought we to live? What really exists? How do we know? This book introduces important themes in ethics, knowledge, and the self, via readings from Plato, Hume, Descartes, Hegel, Darwin, and Buddhist writers. It emphasizes throughout the point of doing philosophy, explains how different areas of philosophy are related, and explores the contexts in which philosophy was and is done.

Edward Craig is Knightbridge Professor of Philosophy at University of Cambridge.

ETHICSSimon BlackburnOur self-image as moral, well-behaved creatures is dogged by scepticism, relativism, hypocrisy, and nihilism, by the fear that in a Godless world science has unmasked us as creatures fated by our genes to be selfish and tribalistic, or competitive and aggressive. In this ‘sparklingly clear’ (Guardian) introduction to ethics Simon Blackburn tackles the major moral questions surrounding birth, death, happiness, desire and freedom, showing us how we should think about the meaning of life, and how we should mistrust the soundbite-sized absolutes that often dominate moral debates.

Simon Blackburn is Professor of Philosophy at University of Cambridge.

POLITICAL PHILOSOPHYDavid MillerThis book introduces readers to the concepts of political philosophy. It starts by explaining why the subject is important and how it tackles basic ethical questions such as ‘how should we live together in society?’ It looks at political authority, the reasons why we need politics at all, the limitations of politics, and whether there are areas of life that shouldn’t be governed by politics. It explores the connections between political authority and justice, a constant theme in political philosophy, and the ways in which social justice can be used to regulate rather than destroy a market economy. David Miller discusses why nations are the natural units of government and whether the rise of multiculturalism and transnational co-operation will change this: will we ever see the formation of a world government?

David Miller is Professor of Political Theory at University of Oxford.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONSPaul WilkinsonOf undoubtable relevance today, in a post-9-11 world of growing political tension and unease, this book covers the topics essential to an understanding of modern international relations. Paul Wilkinson explains the theories and the practices that underlie the subject, and investigates issues ranging from foreign policy, arms control, and terrorism, to the environment and world poverty. He examines the role of organizations such as the United Nations and the European Union, as well as the influence of ethnic and religious movements and terrorist groups which also play a role in shaping the way states and governments interact.

Paul Wilkinson is Professor of International Relations at St Andrews University.

GOVERNANCEMark BevirThe word ‘governance’ is ubiquitous. What accounts for the pervasive use of the term ‘governance’ and to what does it refer? It has a bewildering set of answers. The word ‘governance’ is used in a variety of contexts, but at a general level, it refers to all forms of social coordination and patterns of rule. In this book, the author considers not only the main theories of governance, but also their impact in a variety of areas including corporate, public, and global affairs.

Mark Bevir is Professor of Political Science at University of California, Berkeley.

wOmEN’S STUDIES

FEMINISMMargaret WaltersHow much have women’s lives really changed? What are we to make of the now commonplace insistence that feminism deprives men of their rights and dignities? And how does one tackle the issue of female emancipation in different cultural and economic environments? This book provides an historical account of feminism, exploring its earliest roots as well as key issues including voting rights, the liberation of the sixties, and its relevance today. Margaret Walters touches on the difficulties and inequities that women still face more than forty years after the ‘new wave’ of 1960s feminism, such as how successful women are at combining domesticity, motherhood, and work outside the house. She provides an analysis of the current situation of women across the globe, from Europe and the United States to Third World countries.

Margaret Walters is a freelance writer and reviewer.
