The higher education system has grown significantly in the past two decades in terms of the number of institutions and enrolment. GER in higher education has more than doubled (22.5 per cent) since 1999-2000. Student enrollment has grown 12 times in the last four decades, increasing at a CAGR of 10.4 per cent since 2000-01 The number of universities/institutions of national importance has registered a seven–fold growth in the last four decades. There are 700 universities at present as against 256 in 2000-2001. We now have more than 33,000 affiliated colleges with around 20,000 added after 2000-01.
