How comfortable do you feel talking about your faith or spirituality while at work at your university? Why?

Faith, spirituality, religion Inappropriate (PI)* A personal discussion not for work – (PI)

Act Rather than Speak – (PI) Work and Job Implications* Positive and Negative Impact

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Inappropriate I feel it is frowned upon by the university Religious beliefs should not be part of the workplace except in courses on this subject It is not appropriate for me to share my personal faith and spirituality… The survey itself is vastly inappropriate Appropriate It is part of who I am and who God calls me to be That is what is expected That is what I came here in the first place was to have the freedom to do this Those in my department talk freely about their faith Act Rather than Speak Demonstrate faith through actions Know ye by your works Behaving decently does not have to be couched in religion; should be expected with or without religious influence. Actions should demonstrate your faith and spirituality more than simply speaking about them. Work and Job Implications Positive It’s a part of the mission. We’re evaluated on our ability to minister to students, faculty and staff – RI Spirituality guides me to be focused at work – PI Negative Talking about faith is a given and encouraged. Because I am not as fanatic as some, I avoid long drawn out conversations on faith. I also dislike long drawn out ‘sermons’ from co-workers who seem to not have other things to do besides preach. I have things to do. - RI I am an atheist, and for me to talk about my non-belief would not only offend my fellow workers, but it would likely get me fired. - PI When I have tried to discuss my faith with professors who have the same belief system, they are reluctant for fear of getting into trouble. - PI I’m on a federal funded grant. It’s a violation of the Constitution to even ask this question. - PI Talking about faith rarely accomplishes anything in the workplace. Talking about goals does. – PI I have a very nontraditional faith so I do not discuss it at work. I do not want my career judged by my difference.

What do you think or how do you feel when others talk about or act upon their faith or spirituality at your university?

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Appropriate I think it’s great. What better forum to share ideologies… (PI) I feel it is appropriate in a classroom situation for students to speak of their beliefs and how their beliefs effect their lives. (PI) I feel it is appropriate and good for them to do so. (RI) Inappropriate I think that organized religious participation at the University runs against public education’s commitment to critical thinking and real social justice. Although I think that all employees should have the right to observe religious holidays, I think that the notion of “faith” in the workplace is totally inappropriate for a state institution. (PI) I guess I don’t feel it is appropriate, a kind of breach in the notion of separation of church and state, especially if it involves policy decisions. (PI) No problem unless I think those activities are unbalanced toward the emotional and away from the mind. (RI)

What do you think or how do you feel when others talk about or act upon their faith or spirituality at your university?

Contingent – PI (28.2%) RI (5.3%) Judgment unacceptable Diversity Important No proselytization Respect

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Judgment I am encouraged as long as they are not being judgmental. (RI) As long as they do not “inflict” their conservative beliefs or make negative judgments its fine. (PI) Diversity Its okay but I do not like it when personal faith is made an important part of community gatherings or other university events, because typically it is centered around a certain faith, not recognizing diversity of faith and spiritual awareness. (PI) Proselytize It depends on the situation, but it is not acceptable to try and convert people to your religion or communicate in any way that one religion or non-religion is better than any other at an institution that is for all people. (PI) Respect Love and respect must be central or else it’s usually ugly. (PI) This is fine as long as it is done in such a way that it does not denigrate or seek to diminish the faith or spirituality of others. (PI)

What do you think or how do you feel when others talk about or act upon their faith or spirituality at your university?

Positive Views PI (34.7%) RI (59.6%) Accepted Valued & Appreciated

Positive Impact PI (8.1%) RI (45.6%) Inspiring & Encouraging Supportive of Others

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Acceptable No problem just need to understand and act knowing that others may not agree and therefore act to maintain relationships also (RI) Good, I am always open to converse…with people of different faiths about their journey. (RI) Applaud, value, appreciate such discussions I applaud anyone’s efforts to discuss one of the most crucial aspects of human existence. (PI) I appreciate these times because I feel like they are sharing something of themselves while also helping to fulfill the mission of the university. (RI) IMPACT Inspiring, encouraging I feel inspired and challenged to live the lives of faith that they present. (RI) It’s an inspiration … to hear this. I hear it in meetings where colleagues are focused on common research, common goals. (PI) Supportive Connected. When someone prays for me or others I feel we are connected to each other and to God. When others go beyond expectations to serve me or others I feel connected to them and God… (RI) I actually enjoy knowing people who are guided by strong faith and spirituality, especially when that translates in a compassionate and caring colleague. (PI)

Negative Views PI (37.1%) RI (7.0%) Proselytizing Church & State

Negative Impact PI (2.1%) RI (0%) Conservative Christianity Exclusive rather than inclusive How to respond to students

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Negative themes Talking about faith is a given and encouraged. Because I am not as fanatic as some, I avoid long drawn out conversations on faith. I also dislike long drawn out ‘sermons’ from co-workers who seem to not have other things to do besides preach. I have things to do. – RI I am an atheist, and for me to talk about my non-belief would not only offend my fellow workers, but it would likely get me fired. – PI When I have tried to discuss my faith with professors who have the same belief system, they are reluctant for fear of getting into trouble. – PI I’m on a federal funded grant. It’s a violation of the Constitution to even ask this question. – PI Talking about faith rarely accomplishes anything in the workplace. Talking about goals does. – PI Negative impact themes Too much focus on conservative Christianity Not enough inclusiveness I know how to respond when a religious student complains about a controversial scholarly subject
