Message from the PrincipalStudying part-time is ideal for boosting your personal and professional confidence in a timeframe that suits you. Each year, thousands of people choose part-time study as a way of developing new skills, updating their CV, boosting their job prospects and discovering new interests. You will meet new people too, and learn from experienced professionals in world-class facilities.

From fitness to finance, business to beauty, we offer a wide range of subjects to choose from. Whether you are interested in a professional qualification, an apprenticeship, taster classes or free training to help you find work, you will find that there are many different types of course available to you.

Studying part-time gives you access to the same benefits as full time students. These include our job seeking facilities with a branch of national recruitment specialists REED NCFE situated inside the college. As a member of the Gazelle Group of Colleges, Highbury has an entrepreneurial ethos and we are highly committed to providing opportunities for our students to get involved in setting up and running their own businesses. Our student enterprise society ‘Collective Futures’ was last year named ‘College Society of the Year’ and we frequently send teams of students to compete in national enterprise competitions.

This year Highbury College is celebrating its 50th anniversary, which means you will benefit from our 50 years’ experience serving the education and training needs of our local community. Our mission is ‘to enable all our students to succeed’. I look forward to welcoming you.

Apprenticeships

Contact us (023) 9238 3131 | www.highbury.ac.uk 6

Combine working with learning and get your career off the ground with an Apprenticeship. An Apprenticeship is a real job with training. Apprentices earn and learn at the same time, gaining hands-on experience and new skills and knowledge, in the workplace and, in most cases, at College.

Key benefits of being an apprentice include:

• You earn a wage

• You train alongside experienced staff

• You achieve qualifications

• You learn job specific skills

• You boost your future job prospects

• You can progress through levels and even top up from an Apprenticeship to a degree in some sectors

Apprenticeships follow a structured programme that leads to recognised qualifications. Generally, Apprenticeships take between one and three years to complete (depending on the sector).

Apprenticeships can be taken at three levels: Intermediate (Level 2), Advanced (Level 3) and Higher (Level 4/5). The type of Apprenticeship you choose will depend on your intended career and any experience and qualifications you may already have gained.

Like all employees, apprentices receive a wage. Employers are obliged to cover an apprentice’s salary for a minimum of 30 hours per week.

Can anyone become an apprentice?Anyone over the age of 16, who has been living in England for at least three years and is not in full-time education, can become an apprentice. To be an apprentice you must be employed in your chosen industry.

If you don’t have a job you should log on to the National Apprenticeship Service website at www.apprenticeships.org.uk and search for vacancies using keywords, job role or your postcode.
