Commodore’s Comments
Another year has passed. The 2007 boating season had some high points and some low points. The high points included enough water in the harbor to go where we wanted to go. We had a full season to use our new fish cleaning station and thousands of fish passed through it from cooler to freezer. We also obtained new picnic tables and gas grills that will get lots of use this com-ing season. Other highlights include our new road along the outer wall, the replace-ment of the walk-in cooler in the basement and new windows in the club-house. And don’t forget a successful Pig Roast weekend and other events that brought us together. On the downside, we lost Ron Mueller, a very active member of the club. We also have a handful of members who are battling cancer and other illnesses. Our thoughts and prayers are with those people. Toward the end of the year, we lost a lot of water in the harbor. According to some of our longest-serving members, it is the lowest they have seen the water level since joining the club decades ago. And as water levels drop, gas prices rise. But gas prices are not our main concern now. We will be dredging this year. Our board of directors from 2007 is mainly intact for 2008. We did lose a few members, however. I would like to personally thank Mike Gengler, Jr. for his work the past few years. Mike was our vice commodore last year and also served as rear commodore and corresponding secretary. Mike chaired many of our committees, including finance, planning, mar-keting and rules and bylaws. He spearheaded the task of redesigning our newsletter and making it available on our web site. I’m grateful for his in-put on several club matters. Congratulations, Mike and Katy, on your engagement! I also want to thank Pam Spenner for her three years on the board. She always was the voice of reason at our board meetings and I always re-spected her contributions. She served on the finance committee and was our LMYA liaison. Gary Gale completed six years on the board of directors and has chaired our grounds committee the entire time. I owe Gary a debt of gratitude for all his hard work. Gary donated his time and equipment to help us spruce up the club during our pavilion/gate/canopy project. The two retaining walls in front of the pavilion and the clubhouse look marvelous. Hopefully, we can get the sign installed for the commodore’s parking spot before I’m done being commodore! I also want to thank all the others club members who pitched in over the past year, especially the current board members and officers who quietly do their jobs to the best of their ability. See ya at the club, Ray

The Board of SMYC congratulates Gordon Conant on achieving Life Member status. May you and Donna continue to enjoy boat-ing and all the friendships formed through your association with members past, present and future, for many, many years to come! The second of two weddings in three months had Chuck and Pam Cottrill mugging for the camera one more time with proud smiles. Son Justin wed Jennifer (Jenny) September 8th and Nick married Rebecca (Becky) on De-cember 14th. Wedded bliss to parents and newlyweds alike.

Congratulations
Football Fans
Thanks to all the Football Fans who showed up in mass for the last two regular season Packer
games—against the Bears 12/23 and the Lions 12/30 - as well as for the UW Badgers playoff game
so early on New Year's Day.
The upgraded Entertainment System, including the
new HD TV's and sound system, certainly en-
hanced the experience and brought forth lots of
positive feedback. There was an abundance
of food available, thanks to all the members who
shared their surplus of holiday cookies as well
as other wonderful hearty snacks. Bob Smith's
donation of a 1/2 barrel of beer was generously
consumed and enjoyed by most, appreciated by
all. Thanks to Deb Brunk and Paula Modlinski for
making available hot Italian Beef Sandwiches and
Pasta Salad during half-time.
We enjoyed the addition of all our guests from South Shore Yacht Club who've been stopping by
and, fortunately for us, feel welcome and at home among the SMYC crowd.

Welcome Aboard
The board of SMYC introduces new members,
William "Stan" Crawford, wife Oana, and two
year old daughter, Christina. Residents of St.
Francis, Stan reports they are happy to
be putting down permanent roots in the area. He
is a safety engineer for WE Power. The Craw-
fords have a 34' Silverton, the Adoua
Casã (Romanian for "second home").
South Milwaukee residents, Jeffrey and Sue
Popp, submitted their application for an Associ-
ate Membership, January 7th.
SMYC Member James J. Gilmeister, formerly of Oak Creek, died unexpectedly of an aneurysm on December 10th at the age of 66. He left behind his best friend and devoted wife of 47 years, Anita, his children Jackie (Jeff) Milosch, Sue (Collin) Running, and Jim (Shari) Gilmeister; also seven wonderful grandchildren, Mindy, Tony, Kristen, Stephanie, Rebecca, Chandler and Kara, and one sister Bonnie Wanta (Gordy Krogwald). Known as "Gentlemen Jim" in his early years, he played accordion and performed at weddings and special occasions. After retiring from Milwaukee Forge in 1995, Jim and Anita moved to Mesa, AZ where he started performing, known as "Jimmy Hookum", where he kept many people entertained until his death. Services were held in Oak Creek on Saturday December 15th.

Did you know?
There is an International Chili Society. They are a not-for-profit organization that sanctions chili cookoffs. These events are worldwide and benefit charities or nonprofit organizations. (www.chilicookoff.com/default.asp)
Most chili recipes are a secret and even in some successful restaurant franchises the cooks are
not privy to the ingredients. (www.famouschilirecipes.com/Chili-Secrets.html)
The origins of Chili are shrouded in mystery. The consensus, though, is that it first appeared in San Antonio, Texas around the beginning of the 19th century. (www.wholefoodsmarket.com/recipes/kitchentips/chili.html)
Chili Contest Coming….February 17th
Hey Hey Hey, Think that your chili is good? Or better yet, think your chili is bad????? Don’t be hesitant to enter this year’s chili contest. Exotic offerings of spicy deer meat chili, white chicken chili, and once and only once, Pat Murray won with an offering of Hormel Chili (I think we cleansed our pallets between samples with copious amounts of wine that year). It is all in good fun, and we eat well and have some fun.
It was our custom to have the contest on Super bowl Sunday, but we made a change. By a unanimous decision of the Chili Contest Committee, we will be competing for the South Milwaukee Yacht Club Chili Championship on February 17th. In addition to the contest on that day there is a NAS-CAR event. I know it’s not the Indianapolis 500, but its close. It may be Daytona… right now it’s a mys-tery, just as the winner of the chili contest is always a mystery.
Above: 2006 Chili Contest: Dan Krall and 2006 Contest Winner Dona Cieczka Join us for a fun, interesting, and sometimes surprising event. There will be plenty of food, and I doubt the club will be short on beverages. Entry fee: $5.00 for the prize fund, collected from participants and spectators, which includes judging privileges. Everyone gets to eat too, if they want to………Bring your antacids just in case.
