PerspectivesDear High Streeters:
Having attended the Ball State vs. Indiana
football game on September 10, I was
fascinated by our local paper’s take on that
game. The headlines and much of the
article pertained to Ball State’s “self-inflicted
wounds.” Ball State did lose two fumbles
and did throw an interception.
I decided I would get on an Indiana website
to see what IU’s perspective was on those
three turnovers. That website celebrated
three “take-aways” by the Indiana defense.
On that website you could read who
tackled the ball carrier to cause the first
fumble, who poked the ball out of the
runner’s hands for the second fumble, and
who intercepted the pass.
Self-inflicted wounds or take-aways, which
were they? Well, they were both. From Ball
State’s perspective, they have to know they
will face other opponents who will tackle,
who will try to poke the ball away, and who
will attempt interceptions. If you are the Ball
State offense, you need to do all you can to
prevent those things happening in future
games. From the Indiana perspective, you
want your defense to continue to tackle,
poke at the ball, and intercept passes. It’s
all a matter of perspective and the mindset
one needs to have.
Neither perspective is unfaithful to the facts.
There were two fumbles lost by Ball State to
Indiana. There was an interception of a Ball
State pass by an IU defender.
Especially during this election season, we
are very aware of differences in
perspective. What I lament are the
distortions and the lies that are
promulgated. It’s a sad commentary when
we keep fact-checkers busy during an
election season. But then, there are people
in ordinary life who are more than happy to
spread rumors that could not stand up to a
sound fact-checking. I guess it’s an
unfortunate part of life.
But we who follow Jesus Christ are called to
a higher standard. Paul tells us to “let the
same mind be in you that was in Christ
Jesus. [Phil. 2:5] Later in that same letter
Paul writes: “. . . beloved, whatever is true,
whatever is humble, whatever is just,
whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing,
whatever is commendable, if there is any
excellence and if there is anything worthy of
praise, think about these things. [4:8] People
of this mindset do not require being fact-
checked. People of this mindset filter what
they say, what they write, and even what
they post on Facebook.
They may well offer different perspectives.
Christ has called a variety of people with a
diversity of life experiences. It’s because of
those different perspectives that we can
learn from each other and grow together in
Christ.
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Dale

Angels on High Preschool
Angels on High Preschool and PDO is off to a
great start! We are all thankful for a successful
transition to this new school year!
Enrollment and Changes
We are thrilled to start off the new school year in
both the preschool and PDO. It is going to a full
house each day and we couldn’t be more
excited! This is a testimony to the type of
ministry we have at Angels on High Preschool.
September Recap
This last month, our students transitioned in to
their classes and learned all of the new routines.
We have come so far in just one month! Some
of our students ventured on fun field trips. Our 4-
5 Year Old Class ventured to Minnnetrista
Cultural Center to learn about Johnny
Appleseed. Our 3-4 Year Old Class went to
Jacobs’ Orchard and enjoyed apple donuts and
slushies. We also enjoyed our very first chapel
service. It is always a blessing to listen to the
preschool children as they praise God with their
songs, and to witness their learning about
Jesus. A special thank you to Pastor Sherrie for
providing the bible story during the chapel. The
HSUMC congregation and preschool families
are always invited to our chapels, so please feel
free to join us!
October News
We have much to look forward to in October! We
will celebrate the fall season with our fall parties,
along with fall related field trips. The 4 Year Old
Classes were able to learn all about pumpkins
and will visit a pumpkin patch to grab a pumpkin
of their very own, do a corn maze and a few
other fun activities. Our 3 Year Old Classes get
to explore the library and also read a fun story
about pumpkins. The Transition Class will also
make a trip to Jacobs’ Orchard, which is always
a great time!
Our annual Preschool Sunday, and Open House
will be on Sunday, October 23. We hope the
congregation will join us on this special day! We
are also doing and fundraising dinner at Chili’s in
Muncie starting that day through November 23.
Fall Fundraiser
Another big part of our preschool this month is
our fall fundraisers. The proceeds form our fall
fundraisers benefit the scholarship account and
offset costs of new supplies, etc. During
October, our preschool will be taking orders for
flavor coated pretzels from Concannon’s.
Concannon’s flavor-coated pretzels and popcorn
are manufactured and packaged fresh in plastic
domes.
These delicious treats are great for upcoming
holiday gatherings, as well as gifts! Each
package is sold for $6.00. The order form for
these delicious treats is available in the church
office. You can place an order by completing the
order form and returning it to Lindsay Dodd
(mailbox in the front office) or you can email
your order to Lindsay Dodd at
[email protected] . Orders for
the Concannon pretzels and popcorn taken until
Monday, October 31. We hope you will consider
purchasing some goodies while supporting a
great cause! Thanks in advance.
Angels on High Preschool is YOUR ministry!
As our preschool and PDO continues to grow,
so do our needs of consumable supplies. Please
look in the Helping Hands baskets to see what
items are needed. Right now, our biggest needs
are packaged snacks and copy paper. We thank
you in advance for your donations.
Also, we have seen a much greater need for
scholarships from the families in our community.
It is hard for many families and we want to be
able to continue our ministry to all families.
Would you consider donating to our scholarship
account? Here are some ways your financial
donations could specifically help our preschool
Page 5 of 12
students:
• Donation of $10.00 would cover the cost of a
preschool bag and shirt.
• Donation of $20.00 would cover the cost of one
preschool student’s field trip fees.
• Donation of $55.00 would cover 1 months
tuition for a 2-3 Year Old Student.
• Donation of $95.00 would cover 1 months
tuition for a 3-4 Year Old Student or
Enrichment Student. • Donation of $120.00
would cover 1 months tuition for a 4-5 Year
Old Student.
• Donation of $250.00 would cover 1 month
tuition for the Transitional Kindergarten class.
Volunteers are always welcome in our
preschool! There are many ways you can help!
Angels on High is YOUR ministry! We hope
your prayerfully consider helping Angels on
High Preschool through monetary donations,
donation of supplies, or donating your time.
Thank you for all of your support!
Children Ministries
At the beginning of September, our Promiseland Sunday School (grades K-5th) was able to provide a new way for our kids to learn the bible story through various experiential lessons and hands-on-learning. This was a request made by our High Street families during our Fruit Congregation Journey. To make this happen, there have been many moving parts and lots of Grace! The first step was forming a task group within the Children's Area Work Team, which worked to review curriculum for two small classes during Sunday School. The C.A.W.T then began ideaing for this type of division in our children's Sunday School. We were busy at work in the first few months of 2016 ideaing, reviewing, and praying for God to guide our hearts, ideas, and how to best help our children grow in Christ. Over the summer, our curriculum provider published a new types of lessons called "Rotation Stations" which include breaks-out lessons that vary from their original lessons. Our team began continued to pray and began asking God about who could help with these new lessons! Seven servant leaders stepped forward with a heart to be around our children and help them grow as disciples through lessons that explore Science, Bible Story/
Drama, and Jr. Discipleship (learning spiritual disciples). These new teachers will be teaching once a month with their lesson topics. Our faithful Promiseland teachers will continue to teach about God’s love and grace as well!
Our current children's Sunday School class meets from 9:45AM-10:45 AM on Sunday morning. Children into K-2nd and 3rd-5th grade will be divided for more age appropriate learning. The schedule on a Sunday morning looks like this:
9:45-9:50: Meet in Room 306/307 (Current
Promiseland Room)
9:55-10:15: K-2nd would visit a "Rotation
Station" in Room 302 (Current 8:30 AM
Children's Church room) while the 3rd-5th
Graders would stay in the other room to learn
the lesson of the day.
10:15-10:35: Classes switch
10:40-10:45: We would all gather back in the
main room (Promiseland Room) to discuss what
we learned and pray our way into our day.
On months with a 5th Sunday in 2016-2017, we
will be trying an inter-generational type of
mission project during our Youth and Children
Sunday Schools. Our last project in June, we
decorated Garden Stones for Habitat for
Humanity to give to families. Our next project
with children and youth is planned for October
30th. We will be working on a TOP SECRET
mission project for Children's Sabbath!
God is so good!! After 9 months of ideaing,
working, planning and praying- God has
provided.
**If you are interested in leading a rotation
station (cooking, games, missions, or anything
you can think of!), working in our Promiseland
room, or helping with our 5th Sunday Missions,
see Kasey Needham. We want our HSUMC
community to be able to share your life with our

children by supporting, loving, and meeting our
children at every stage of their faith!

Promiseland:

Youth Ministries Books of the Bible
Youth Sunday School
Every Sunday, 9:45-10:45AM
Did you know that the Bible is a compilation
of Books and writers? Did you know there
are 66 chapters in the Bible?
Our youth Sunday School is getting ready to
tackle what the Bible is… why do we study
the Bible, what is each chapter about.
Sometimes the Bible itself can be rather
intimidating as it’s the size of a Harry Potter
or Hunger Games book! What’s inside is
special and a way God lights up our hearts
with his Word!
Our youth are passionate about serving
others in our church and in our community.
In fact, our Youth Council took the
opportunity to understand why we take part
in service and mission opportunities. Our
youth believe Jesus is calling us into mission!
Being in mission bring the Bible to life,
preach the Gospel through actions, and
open our eyes to the world around us!
Missions also allow us to grow together as a
community and build teamwork.
Over the next 3-4 months, we have different
ways we will be working in the church and in
the Muncie Community.

Our children and youth choirs will be offering
their voices in worship on October 2nd. In the
UMC liturgical calendar, we will be celebrating
World Communion. We will celebrate our
brothers and sisters in Christ around the world
as well as praise God for the sacrifice made for
us to live! Praise Kids will lift up their voices to
God by singing a well-known hymn, “I Am the
Church” with a twist! Call to Christ will be
singing a communion piece using the text from
Matthew 14:13-21 and Mark 6: 30-34! We look
forward to adding to worship as our choirs sing
for the Glory of God!

Attention Women of High Street!
Do you love helping others? Do you desire to be
the hands and feet of Christ while helping to
make a local family's dream of home ownership
come true? If the answer to these questions are
yes, I would love for you to join our Habitat for
Humanity Women Build team with me!
The date for our High Street group is Saturday,
October 22nd from 9am to 3pm, with lunch
included. Our team will consist of 15 members,
and each member is tasked with the goal of
helping to raise $3000 for the team build. We
are already halfway to that goal with funds from
our bucket offering earlier this year! Praise God!
Having personally experienced two Women
Build's in the past few years, I can tell you it is a
blessing to be a part of such an amazing,
tangible, Christ-based change for a local family.
No special construction talents are needed to
join the team, and no previous experience is
needed either. On site will be the local Habitat
construction director, and he will be more than
happy to guide us through each task of the day.
Only a giving heart, a willing spirit, and a desire
to make a difference are required.
Please contact me at home at 288-6812 or via
email at [email protected] if you would
like to join our team. I look forward to hearing
from you!
Community Service Day
Our Mission Committee is offering us the
opportunity to impact our community on Saturday,
October 1, through our community service day.

Fellowship and donuts with the residents of Lynd
Place, including our own Dorothy Webb, age 101.
Our children are invited to share their talents, as
well as to join all of us in activities like coloring
and board games. It is our goal to engage,
encourage, and get to know the residents at Lynd
Place. This event will begin at 10am and conclude
at 11:15am; Christian Ministries - We need people
with plumbing and carpentry skills to work on the
apartments; Muncie Clean and Beautiful - tidying
