TEACHING FOR ENGAGEMENT, OPPORTUNITY AND SUCCESS

PRINCIPAL’S PERSONAL MESSAGE

As we enter the second half of Term 2, I would like to start this newsletter with an update on the works which have been taking place across the school.

The first of the kitchen upgrades has been completed and all staff are extremely happy with the outcome. It has provided a fresh and modern learning environment and students are very excited to be able to work in this space.

Work has been completed to repair a large section of damaged concrete in the quad to ensure that students being transported to school have a safe area to be dropped off and picked up.

Scaffolding has just started to be set up in preparation for a full roof replacement for the school hall. It is expected that this work could take up to 6 weeks, however, will have minimal impact on teaching, learning and other school activities. While this work is being conducted, we will also be having all windows and external doors replaced in the hall.

Work is scheduled to commence shortly on shade sails to cover the seating areas in the Pleasance, as well as carpet to the remaining areas of the front office and hallway areas.

The schools Building and Environment team have commenced their classroom audit. This audit will enable us to look at the quality of the learning environment. We will be looking at all elements of the learning space to ensure that we provide learning spaces which are inviting and engaging for all students and staff. It is envisaged that once complete, we will be able to identify the learning spaces most in need of improvement and will then be able to start the process of making these improvements.

I have been very impressed recently with the improvements in student attitude towards their attendance. Through sustained work and support from the Year Advisers, we have seen significant improvements in the number of students arriving late to school, as well as the overall attendance rates of students at school. At our most recent fortnightly attendance challenge, there were over 80 students with 100% attendance. I strongly encourage all parents to continue to support our challenge to improve student attendance. Being at school on time every day is critical to providing students with a stable start to the day. I would like to acknowledge the students who continue to do the right thing in regards to their attendance. I have had the privilege recently of attending a number of events with our students to celebrate amazing things which are happening within our local community and with our partner schools. This has included students being involved in an art project with Penny Sabudin to highlight the situation of the Fishkill in the Murray Darling basin. We have also had students representing Corrimal High School in their work on Reconciliation Week activities and assemblies at school, as well as student representation at the Reconciliation Walk organised by Bellambi Public School. This was an outstanding event highlighting the work being done in our local community to promote reconciliation. It has made me very proud to see the manner in which our students represent their school and the way they conduct themselves in the community. I would like to acknowledge the work that our P & C has been completing lately. Although they are only a small P & C, they are very passionate and proactive in their support for the staff and students at the school. I would like to encourage greater participation from the parents in our school community. Involvement in the P & C provides you with the opportunity to be part of the decision making and consultation processes at the school. Meetings are held every term in Week 3 & Week 8. Please feel free to attend and see what you can do to support us.

TEACHING FOR ENGAGEMENT, OPPORTUNITY AND SUCCESS

It was fantastic to see the level of participation in the school athletics carnival which was held recently. I was very impressed with the attitude and behaviour of all students involved and would like to thank the PDHPE staff for their organisation and professionalism in organising this event. I congratulate all of the students who achieved success as well as the staff who participated in events on the day. The last two days has bought some great achievements for our school. Our junior debating team took on Keira High School in what was reported to be an outstanding debate. I received a phone call from the Principal of Keira High School to personally congratulate our team on their performance, making particular note of our last speaker who he said was exceptional. Congratulations to all students involved in this team and to Mrs Mahon for her support of these students. Wednesday of this week saw the first of the mass rehearsals for the Southern Stars arena spectacular. Mrs Organ is choreographing a performance for one of the songs in the show and had students from Corrimal High School, Corrimal East Public School, Bellambi Public School, Tarrawanna Public School and Woonona Public School engaged in a whole day rehearsal. I was fortunate enough to watch the students during their practice and was extremely impressed with the work of all of the students and the enjoyment that I saw from their involvement. This is the first time that Corrimal High School has hosted and been involved in a performance of this nature and provides a great opportunity for students who love the performing arts. This is also something that I would like to see continue into the future – there was certainly a lot of talented students there this week. Thank you for your ongoing support of our school and the initiatives that we are providing for your students. Paul Roger Principal

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S PERSONAL MESSAGE

We would like to congratulate the majority of students on what has been a very settled first half of term 2. As we walk around the school and visit a wide variety of classes, we have witnessed students really engaging in teaching and learning. This is a credit to the hard work of our teachers, who consistently strive to prepare and deliver engaging and future focussed lessons for our students. We really enjoy visits from students who proudly show us their accomplishments in class. Hayden H in year 11 is to be congratulated on his tie dye t-shirt which he created with Mrs Henderson in Visual Design; Mrs Rainford popped in with Cohen W in Art to showcase a very realistic drawing of a tiger; Kodie S wrote a very impressive creative story in Mrs Salluci’s English class, of which Mr Graham was a main character in, Mr Graham was very chuffed about this and looks forward to chapter two; and William M has some wonderful artwork on display in the front office this week, which he has been working on with Mrs Bass. These are just some examples of the fantastic work happening in our classrooms. Well done to our students, who are always striving to excel in their schooling.

TEACHING FOR ENGAGEMENT, OPPORTUNITY AND SUCCESS

The cold weather certainly did hit us this week. It was good to see most students were prepared for this cold snap with appropriate uniform. However, there were still quite a few non-school jumpers and tights on display. Students who are out of uniform, without a note, will be issued a detention. We have school uniform for sale in our front office and encourage parents to purchase the correct uniform. If you require financial assistance, please contact the school for a range of options that may be available to you. It is a high priority of ours to get all of our students in full school uniform, every day. We have implemented a revised mobile phone policy, following an evaluation of our current practices as well as research into Department of Education recommendations. If students continue to use their phone, against teacher instruction, their phone will be confiscated and held in the front office until the end of the day. If this happens on more than one occasion, parents will be asked to come to the school to collect the phone. We really appreciate parent support on this matter. If you need to contact your child, please contact them through the front office. Ross Graham & Alicia Van Loo Deputy Principal

TEACHING FOR ENGAGEMENT, OPPORTUNITY AND SUCCESS

NSW CHS BOYS FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Last week Lewis Grimshaw competed at the NSW Combined High Schools Boys Football Championships for the South Coast. Lewis played an important role in the team, who defeated the favourites Sydney South West on the first day. He then went on to score crucial goals in wins against North West Region and Western Region, before scoring a double in a man of the match performance against a strong Sydney North outfit. South Coast finished the Championships in 6th place, but were unlucky not to go further, losing the quarter final to eventual champions, Sydney East in the last kick of the game.

KOORI CONNECTION

What a fantastic Reconciliation Week at Corrimal High School organised and coordinated by the Koori Leadership Council of 2019. Driving home this year’s theme - Grounded in Truth - the KLC developed roll call activities for the whole school, a mural opening celebrating the contributions of local Aboriginal artist Lani Balzan, participation in the local Walk for Reconciliation, a Koori Cafe with Indigenous inspired goodies and most powerfully of all, a Reconciliation Assembly with words of wisdom shared by NIAECG President Ms Julie Street-Smith. Thank you leaders of the KLC for the outstanding job and thank you to our local Aboriginal community for sharing your history, culture, teaching and futures as we share the journey together.

FISHKILL PROJECT

Students in Year 9/10IST have started to look at the diverse needs of the environment, how to be sustainable and the means to draw attention to current issues to encourage responsible and respectful practices. As part of this project, students are working on small collaborative tasks to promote a cause using technology. Students are tasked with researching current ways people are doing this. Earlier this week, several students were able to attended and see first hand some of the work that is being done to draw attention to the Murray River Cod. The exhibition of FISH KILL 2019, unveiled at the EcoArts Australis conference, allowed students to see the power of technology and art come together and hear from the experience of the amazing artist Penny Sadubin. Congratulations to the Year 9 IST students who assisted in 3D printing some of the fish on the piece in support of Penny and the need to draw attention to such environmental issues.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

On Thursday 23/5/19 Corrimal High School held its Annual Athletics Carnival. The day involved a mixture of competitive and non-competitive events to cater for all abilities. Students supported the theme of the day which was “Team Colours” and many students dressed up in their favourite team jerseys and uniforms. Students rotated around in their age groups and participated in events like Javelin, Discus, Shot Put, Long Jump, Sprints and Novelty activities. Students enjoyed the supportive and encouraging atmosphere as each student took part. The finale of the day was the very competitive Relay Races where students got to witness some very slick

baton changes. The current Year 12 students put on a BBQ and Drinks Stall and these were well supported by the rest of the school community. Congratulations to all the students that took part on the day and participated with enthusiasm. Congratulations to all those students that broke school records this year. Age Champions will be announced at the Sports Presentation Evening later in the year. We wish all those students who qualified for the Zone Athletics Carnival good luck at the next level of competition. The Zone Athletics Carnival is on Tuesday 2nd July at the Kerryn McCann Athletics Centre at Beaton Park.

P&C NEWS

Dear Parents and Community Members, This is our first opportunity to share with you through the School Newsletter. We are a small group of parents and community members who are seeking to support the learning of your students through raising funds to improve the resources and conditions at Corrimal High School. We are always keen to have new members join us in this effort. So far this year we have provided $1100 to the school from the Auction held last year and sourced an $18 000 grant, through the office of Mr Ryan Park, to contribute to the ongoing improvements in the Pleasance. We have also applied for an extra grant from the State Government that we hope to provide further information about very soon.

At the recent Federal election, the P&C were able to raise an additional $500 from the sale of “Democracy” Lamingtons and Caramel Slices. This week, order forms have been released for the Big P&C Pie Drive. The forms are available from the school office or directly downloadable from the CHS P&C Facebook Page. Our friends at Coniston Bakery have also donated a cake voucher as a prize for the student who manages to raise the highest number of orders. Please have orders back to school by Thursday 27 June [Week 9]. Orders are to be collected on Friday 5 July; last day of term. For the benefit of our students, thank you for your support and involvement. Janice Paterson – President, Brad Chapman - Secretary
